Should babies be assigned a sex at birth or choose their own

bambambini if I asked my kids what they want to eat, I reckon my son would vote for sweets.

If I did decide that what he wanted came first and let him eat sweets morning noon and night, it would not stop them having a detrimental effect on him, him getting fat, losing his teeth, potentially getting diabetes one day.

The real world exists, biology is one of the things that is not defined by culture. Unlike gender, which is totally defined by culture!

What if a transman gets ovarian cancer? How to get help for a body part that you dont acknowledge or identify with?

The risk is heightened by taking male hormones, but men dont have wombs, so how to cope with periods? I dont know how it works for male-female trans, but a female-male transperson I know was so desperately broody that he considered stopping with the male hormones. Being very manly looking, vanity prevented him from having a child, which is sad.

I think people dont always understand the heartache and trauma trans people go through even if they live as their chosen gender so I think its better to accept ourselves and teach our children to be body positive. There is no gender neutral, there is weak and wobbly parenting resulting in confused children that grow into angst ridden trans people.

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/07/2017 23:26

I doubt children think about it much at all, they should just be able to be who they are as human beings without people shoving this down their throats.

You do realise this is defining dangerous stereotypes and is not helping the trans community at all don't you OP. I mean this subject really should not be related to trans at all.

"But you really do have either a willy or a vagina smile"

But again what does this actually mean now? A woman can have a penis, a man a vagina. If you have a penis you can now compete in the women's events in sports.

Thinking like that is why people think the world is going absolutely batshit!! Yes, a woman can have a penis, and a man a vagina - that doesn't make them biologically one though!
Men competing in women's sports for example as they "identify" as a woman. How are they on an even keel to the female runners as surely their biological make up is different, and their testosterone levels too?
Then there was a case in the papers "man gives birth to baby" - THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE!
It is a woman, who is changing her sex to become a man, but still has all her female reproductive organs in place.
So not a man when it comes to giving birth at all.
The world's stark staring mad in some respects.

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/07/2017 23:28

Trans people identify with the opposite sex to what they were born, they don't tend to identify as no gender. It's the gender neutral stuff that I think should not be linked to Transsexuals, just to be clear

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 02/07/2017 23:29

I noticed that it was in the news that Angelina jolie and brad Pitts child - who they insisted was being brought up "gender neutral" since birth - has somehow coincidentally decided they are trans. How fashionable.

Maxandrubyrubyandmax · 02/07/2017 23:30

The worlds go mad. A baby is either male or female it's a chromsonal thing. No wonder so many kids are struggling with mentL health issues. Keep it simple for them in their childhood stop forcing them to question what inthe majority of cases is very black and white out of some misplace political correctness

CheesesOfNazereth · 02/07/2017 23:32

No a woman can't have an actual penis, a man can't have an actual vagina. A man can have his penis pulled apart and put back together in the shape of a vagina, but its not the same thing.

VestalVirgin · 02/07/2017 23:33

Sorry, you still aren't clear.

Transgenderism these days, you know, the people who lobby for LAWS that subject WOMEN to PRISON RAPE by MALE PRISONERS, are exactly those who believe in GENDER and all the other BULLSHIT.

There might be some transsexual people who don't want that, and are aware that for them to feel that they should be the other sex, the sexes must have a clear definition, but they aren't yelling loud enough to be heard over all the bullshit, I am afraid.

isupposeitsverynice · 02/07/2017 23:36

This came up in my facebook news feed the other day - I present without comment (not really, I admit I laughed like a drain)

No a woman can't have an actual penis, a man can't have an actual vagina. A man can have his penis pulled apart and put back together in the shape of a vagina, but its not the same thing.

Exactly. You'd have a fake one constructed. It doesn't make you actually have one.

VestalVirgin · 02/07/2017 23:37

Um, not enforcing gender on a child would, in theory, help that child realize that while sex is real, gender is a social construct that needs to be abolished.

So if they really raised the child gender neutral, that shouldn't be the reason for the transness.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 02/07/2017 23:38

Sorry, I meant sex neutral. Now I'm bloody doing it too!!

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/07/2017 23:39

Vestal sorry I'm very tired. All I mean is I don't think gender neutral and transgender are the same thing.

I think the gender neutral thing is just about giving people more boxes to define themselves by. I am a woman as I have a Vigina, that doesn't define me as a human being. I can't honestly say I even think about it very much. Just be who you are, if you are not a walking stereotype of a man or woman, it doesn't mean you then have to identify as something else and give up your sex. I find the whole thing a bit bizarre.

seventhgonickname · 02/07/2017 23:41

I had CVS so knew the sex of my dd before she was born or saw her genitals. Also no drs were present at her birth(same with most births)so she wasn't assigned any gender at birth because her sex was determined by her chromosomes.

MeanAger · 02/07/2017 23:42

Sex isn't assigned. It's observed and recorded.

VestalVirgin · 02/07/2017 23:43

I find the whole thing a bit bizarre.

Well, we sure agree on that.

@Beyond: Sex neutral? How that's supposed to even work?

I knew they were a bit bonkers, but would have expected more of Jolie, really.

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 02/07/2017 23:44

I'm trying to find the original story when it broke, but all I can find is "omg, they are the bestest parents eva, 2016"

BlackForestCake · 02/07/2017 23:47

Babies are not "assigned" a sex. Their sex is observed and recorded.

BlackForestCake · 02/07/2017 23:48

Oh, snap, MeanAger

MeanAger · 02/07/2017 23:50

Ha blackforest! Grin

PickAChew · 03/07/2017 00:00

I'm rather bemuse by the idea that being a vacuous idiot who has been interviewed on telly somehow makes you the voice of Absolute Truth.

If that was the case, we'd all be living our lives according to Loose Women and Graham Norton's latest guests.

deffoncforthis · 03/07/2017 00:05

Fucking mental.

deffoncforthis · 03/07/2017 00:11

Um, not enforcing gender on a child would, in theory, help that child realize that while sex is real, gender is a social construct that needs to be abolished.

Or, confusion about gender is a silly and destructive idea and 50 years from now people will wonder how our society did such evil things to kids and called it good.

Not the same situation, but one of my colleagues received a formal complaint for not inviting a MTF for a smear test.

It "invalidated (their) womanhood".
