to ask that you stop spreading your illness if you have 'just a cold'

48 hours ago dp arrived home full of snots. Didn't know how he got it.
36 hours later, having taken cold prevention nasal spray, it has gone straight to my lungs. I've taken my seretide as usual and Ventolin about 15 times and I am still coughing.
I'm only 5 months out of ICU with pneumonia and multiple organ failure (lungs included). I have asthma.

AIBU in asking you to use a fucking tissue if you sneeze and to stay the fuck at home if you're snotting everywhere? I do not fancy another two weeks on a god damned ventilator.

sorry but I can't take time off work for a cold - I do keep 'clean' but I can't afford to be unemployed

missiondecision · 01/07/2017 20:34

Yabu. You can't live in a bubble.
I'm sorry you have been unwell and sincerely hope you feel good again soon. But it's not everyone else's fault.

harderandharder2breathe · 01/07/2017 20:34

I'm sorry you're unwell but most people can't afford to take time off work for every cold.

user1496484020 · 01/07/2017 20:36

Well I can't fucking afford to be in ICU for two weeks either - I almost fucking died. If you stayed the hell at home for the first day, the rest of us wouldn't end up off so long. Keep your snots and disease at home.

MaisyPops · 01/07/2017 20:36

The world doesn't stop because people have the sniffles.
Shall I put a cover teacher in front of my class for 4 months in their gcse year because I take time off work every time I have a cold or a runny nose?

Yes you are unwell and you're probably feeling like shite anyone who might ever come into contact with anyone who sees you doesn't go about dialysis life because they have a cough and a runny nose is just the most ridiculous thing I've heard in ages.

AfraidOfMyShadow · 01/07/2017 20:36

If only we could take time off for every cold. And I'm really sorry for you but there isn't anything most people can do.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/07/2017 20:38

oh FFS OP - sorry you were ill but it's not the worlds fault it's life

I take it your DH has moved out for the next 2 weeks?

Marmitegrapes · 01/07/2017 20:38

I cant imagine workplaces being ok with people taking the day off work just for a cold, people should sneeze into tissue, wash hands regularly, good hygiene. But it's not practical to take days off just for a cold.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 01/07/2017 20:38

Flowers You have my utmost sympathies, OP, and I hope you recover well. It really does sound awful. Sad
And I definitely agree that everyone should practice good hygiene, particularly whilst ill!

However (and I apologise if this sounds callous) it's not practical to put everyday life on hold every time someone has a cold. Whilst most people can avoid visits and non-essential going out, things like work, shopping, school runs etc need to carry on as normal.

Sorry!

JustArandomUser · 01/07/2017 20:39

It must suck to have a compromised immune system, but I'm with everyone else. The world would grind to a halt if everyone ran and hid indoors at the first sign of a cold.

MaisyPops · 01/07/2017 20:39
  • delete failure Yes you are unwell and you're probably feeling like shite. BUT expectinh anyone who might ever come into contact with anyone who sees you doesn't go about daily life because they have a cough and a runny nose is just the most ridiculous thing I've heard in ages.
StarryCorpulentCunt · 01/07/2017 20:39

YABU. Although I agree with you about tissues. Most of us don't have the luxury of staying at home with every sniffle. I'm sorry for your situation OP but unfortunately the vast majority of us would lose our jobs taking time off for a cold. I catch every cold going and have a spinal condition. If I have more than 3 absences per year then I am disciplined. 2 more after that in the same year and I am dismissed. If I have a day off it's because I physically cannot get up or because my kids are ill with D&V. Anything less and I have to go in and so do they. It's not a choice. I lose my job and we're homeless.

Madbum · 01/07/2017 20:40

Your DP should have known better than to bring that home to you knowing you're susceptible, blame him!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 01/07/2017 20:40

Totally sympathise because dh was extremely ill 2 years ago and has permanently lost some lung function but colds are colds. I can't keep the dc off school for the duration of multiple colds and I can't be housebound every time I have one either.

MaisyPops · 01/07/2017 20:41

Aye but StarryCorpulentCunt we're the irresponsible people who should put our jobs and families on the line by not leaving the house if we have to blow our nose. Hmm

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 01/07/2017 20:41

Sorry but no. If I've got a nasty cold/mild flu I'll probably stay home but if I'm well enough to come in to work I'll come in, (unless I'm working in an ICU or a nursing home). I don't think there's really an answer to this one.

guinnessgirl · 01/07/2017 20:43

I really feel for you. My best friend is currently immunocompromised and I fully understand just how difficult that makes things. However, it simply isn't practical or realistic for everyone with any kind of virus or cold to cloister themselves away for the duration. No matter how rough I might feel, nobody else is going to take my DC to school for me!

caffeinestream · 01/07/2017 20:44

Why did your husband come back home if he knew him having a cold could put you in the hospital?

MaisyPops · 01/07/2017 20:45

guinnessgirl
I also feel for the OP being unwell.

My sympathy went down a little when they decided to start dropping the word 'fucking' into every other sentence just to intensify how awful the rest of the world are.

BabsGanoush · 01/07/2017 20:45

Its difficult, but you caught your cold from your DH

BroomHandledMouser · 01/07/2017 20:47

LTB

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 01/07/2017 20:49

YABU, sorry. If everyone stayed home while they had a cold, the country would be fucked and half of us would get fired.

user1471453601 · 01/07/2017 20:49

This is sich a difficult one. Llast year I was having my last radiotherapy session, following cancer. Because my radiotherapy centre was 26 miles away, I used a local charity to get me there and back. The guy I was sat next to mentioned he had a sore throat.

Two days later, so did I.. Two days after that I had a chest infection. Then pneumonia.

Should the guy not gone to his radiotherapy? Or should I have used public transport to get there and back? Or should he?

I have asthma and chest infections are a trigger, so almost always result in antibiotics and steroids. Family and friends are great, when they have colds, they keep out of my way.

But I cannot, surely, expect the general public to do the same?

It's a bugger, I know.

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 01/07/2017 20:50

And your if your DH stayed the fuck at home while he was snotty, how would that help you? Isn't that how you got it anyway?
You;re not really making sense.

LilQueenie · 01/07/2017 20:50

yabu besides why do we all have to do as you tell us what about your dp. Why could he not have a few days at a hotel if so concerned? You were still happy to have him around you knowing he was unwell!
