The ultimate British breakfast

DarthMaiden · 28/06/2017 20:58

So out of a family of 4 we have various versions of this.

AIBU to think I am right?

Me: 2 rashers of bacon, a sausage, a potato cake, fried egg, grilled tomato and mushrooms.

DH: 2 rashers of bacon, 2 sausages, slice of black pudding, 2 potato cakes, scrambled eggs, beans

DSD: 2 potatoes cakes, poached egg, bacon and beans

DS: toast, beans, scrambled eggs, 3 potato cakes and 2 sausages

Over to the MN jury...which breakfast would you have?

Ulster fry.

2 sausages
2 bacon
fried egg
soda bread
potato bread

HP or ketchup. My kids like beans. I can take or leave them.

If going a bit old school (like my granny used to make) there would also be a triangle of fried wheaten bread, half a fried pancake and a slice of veg roll!

April241 · 28/06/2017 22:45

Wait no, just reread, there's no egg in tattie scones so must be the cakes. Still sound nice!

UrsulaPandress · 28/06/2017 22:47

Eggy bread made with white warburtons
Baked beans
Well done veggie bacon.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 28/06/2017 22:48

dream fried slice of bread

NotTheDuchessOfCambridge · 28/06/2017 22:51

2 bacon
1 sausage
Beans
Fried egg
lava bread
Cockles
White bread with salted butter.

I know the lava bread looks gross but it's soooo goood!!

byebyeapplepie · 28/06/2017 22:53

Potato cakes from ASDA or Tesco where i live in England are the same as what would be labelled potato farls or potato bread in Northern Ireland.

Dreamstosell · 28/06/2017 22:54

Ah thanks April. We would usually say square sausage or slice sausage (suppose that should be sliced sausage)

Ethylred · 28/06/2017 22:54

I have gained two dress sizes reading this thread.

Magicmonster · 28/06/2017 22:57

I'm with your DSD, although I would also be eyeing up your mushrooms!

Dreamstosell · 28/06/2017 22:59

Oops I see it's a fried slice of bread

TheDogAteMyGoatskinVellum · 28/06/2017 23:22

I grew up having potato cakes as part of breakfast in the 80s and 90s. Very common in the northwest of England. Quick google suggests it's traditional Lancashire and Irish. Different to potato bread though, as a pp pointed out that's sort of... bready.

TheDogAteMyGoatskinVellum · 28/06/2017 23:31

Actually on further research, it's more Lancashire to bake them. I fry, so that's the Irish being passed down. Mind, English people having Irish heritage is pretty standard issue where I am.

NotCitrus · 29/06/2017 00:21

2 fried eggs, whites cooked through, runny yolk, not chewy - must be freshly cooked and put on the plate last.
1 rasher back bacon
2 really good quality herby sausages
1 slice black pudding (optional)
2 halves of fried tomato, absolutely not tinned, properly cooked through
Fried mushrooms x lots
Huge mug of tea, lots of wholemeal toast, butter, good jam or honey

No baked beans in sight, nor fried slice or hash browns. Wouldn't object to a potato scone, square sausage etc.

I have to admit that I'm a poncy Londoner and my favourite is to have the above in my local with a pile of spinach leaves. It's a balanced meal then, innit?

kel1234 · 29/06/2017 00:28

My perfect breakfast is: 2 bacon, 2 sausages, scrambled egg (only type of egg I eat), beans, fried slice, and a cup of tea. Nothing else for me.

kel1234 · 29/06/2017 00:29

Covered in ketchup of course r

SomeOtherFuckers · 29/06/2017 00:33

2 sausage
1 bacon
Fried egg
Black pudding
Fried mushrooms
Beans
1 slice toast

user1497403588 · 29/06/2017 02:07

I'm a very very fussy English/ Irish breakfast person. I'm a weirdo apparently!

I don't like the full works, I'd be happy with bacon, sausages and toast, and all eaten seperately. No putting the sausage on the bread or anything blugh!, maybe the bacon at a push Blush I'm like a child! this is the only type of food I'm fussy with though, dunno why!

Although DP would say the perfect breakfast would probably be
3 bacon
2 sausage
Tomatoes
Mushrooms
Fried Egg
Toast
Pudding
Beans

Irish breakfast Grin

user1497403588 · 29/06/2017 02:09

and potato cakes are called hash browns here in Ireland, funny enough I've never eaten one Grin

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 02:14

and potato cakes are called hash browns here in Ireland

No they aren't. They are 2 completely different things.

squoosh · 29/06/2017 02:14

No they're not. Hash browns are a completely different thing.

squoosh · 29/06/2017 02:15

Carb X post 😄

Bitchywaitress · 29/06/2017 02:17

Just remember to use the sausage as a breakwater.

NameChange30 · 29/06/2017 02:18

"should probably have titled the post the ultimate Anglo/Scot breakfast!!!"

Well, Britain includes both, so your post title is fine! English people call it "English breakfast" and Scottish people call it "Scottish breakfast" so I did wonder whether you might have both influences in there Wink It would be nice if more people called it British breakfast but I don't see that happening!

Now, is it really only your DS who has toast with it?! If so he wins. You have to have toast. Also:
Eggs (in any form)
Bacon
Sausage(s)
Tomato

Mushrooms, potato cakes / hash browns and black pudding are optional extras.

Must be accompanied by tea or coffee and freshly squeezed OJ.

I want cooked breakfast now!!

AndTakeYourHorseWithYou · 29/06/2017 02:27

English people call it "English breakfast" and Scottish people call it "Scottish breakfast" ...... It would be nice if more people called it British breakfast

they have different components so they aren't the same thing. Why would you call them both British? And welsh breakfasts and Ulster Fry and a Full Irish....all different too.

lalalalyra · 29/06/2017 02:33

Bacon
Sausage
Potato Scone
Fruit Pudding
Mushrooms
French Toast/Eggy Bread
Poached Egg
Toast
Ketchup
