So out of a family of 4 we have various versions of this.

AIBU to think I am right?

Me: 2 rashers of bacon, a sausage, a potato cake, fried egg, grilled tomato and mushrooms.

DH: 2 rashers of bacon, 2 sausages, slice of black pudding, 2 potato cakes, scrambled eggs, beans

DSD: 2 potatoes cakes, poached egg, bacon and beans

DS: toast, beans, scrambled eggs, 3 potato cakes and 2 sausages

Over to the MN jury...which breakfast would you have?

Where do people live where potato cakes aren't traditional? I'm English and they definitely are!

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 28/06/2017 22:09

fruitcake

strong-bones plumed tomatos

squoosh

AdaColeman · 28/06/2017 22:11

Smoked bacon
Black pudding
White pudding
Fried egg
Potoato cake or fried potato
Large field mushroom

Lashings of tea and toast and marmalade.

Grin at the infamous roast breakfast, wouldn't like to face that at breakfast time or any time really!

Penfold007 · 28/06/2017 22:15

2 bacon, oatcake, poached egg or tinned tomatoes

squoosh · 28/06/2017 22:17

That fruitcake link is bringing me to a White pudding page. Is it meant to be that clootie dumpling stuff?

And as for tinned tomatoes, well that's wronger than a wrong thing.

Palomb · 28/06/2017 22:17

I've never even heard of potato cakes.

I'm pretty sure I couldn't buy potato bread/farls/scones in England 20 years ago. Think they're relatively new on an english breakfast.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 28/06/2017 22:21

Beans have no place on the breakfast table. Or anywhere else for that matter

Augustbabyyeah · 28/06/2017 22:23

Two fried eggs, two rashers bacon, two slices black pudding, two hash browns, mushrooms and white buttered toast oh and HP sauce.

Is this a southern thing?? I live in Northumberland and have never heard of them.

ItsNachoCheese · 28/06/2017 22:24

Square and link sausages, bacon, eggs, hash brown, fruit/black pudding (mood dependant), tattie scone, beans, mushrooms, haggis and some toast and tea to wash it all down = scottish breakfast of champions

squoosh · 28/06/2017 22:24

I love potato cakes, made with leftover mash and scallion, but they're not a breakfast food to me. Not to say I wouldn't happily scoff one though!

I like Scottish potato scones though. Very good for a hangover.

squoosh · 28/06/2017 22:25

Square sausage is rank though.

brieandcrackers · 28/06/2017 22:25

2 or 3 rashers of bacon
2 sausages
1 fried egg (or scrambled)
Beans
(Mushrooms and a fried tomato although I hate both with a passion)

Plus fried bread!!!! Hadn't experienced this up until a couple of years ago and now my fry-ups aren't complete without it (terribly unhealthy I know but if I'm having a fry up I'm hardly the pinnacle of health anyway Grin)

deadringer · 28/06/2017 22:26

Dh's pick would be perfect for me. I would add toast and probably not bother with the beans though.

Guepe · 28/06/2017 22:26

I've lived in various places in the northwest, as well as Wales, and have never seen one on a breakfast (and I would have them in cafes quite frequently).

DarthMaiden · 28/06/2017 22:27

To the uninitiated - as I was until meeting DH - potato cakes are made with mash, egg, flour and seasoning and formed into a dough that you roll out to about a quarter of a centimetre thick.

You then fry in butter.

They are lush and far better than hash browns and I have my hard hat on so I don't care if you disagree.

You can buy them ready made and they are generally very nice, but homemade are the best and I make extra mashed potatoes just for this Smile

2 X back bacon
2 X sausages
2 X fried bread
2 X fried egg
Small portions beans
Toast wi butter

Mahoosive pot of builders tea NB this is essential.

Never had potato cake ever

I'm from Yorkshire

Crumbs1 · 28/06/2017 22:30

A Full English breakfast consists of back bacon, sausage, grilled tomato, mushrooms, poached or fried egg. Toast.

Appropriate alternatives are kedgeree or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon.

squoosh · 28/06/2017 22:33

I think potato cakes are more of an Irish thing tbh.

Thishatisnotmine · 28/06/2017 22:36

At least 2 rashers of bacon, not smoked but either back or streaky; softly scrambled eggs; something carby such as a potato cake/hash brown/slice of toast; one sausage; black pudding; white pudding; a very small serving of baked beans which gave been slowly heated until thick as no one likes bean juice. Nice coffee. Oooh, a Staffordshire oatcake though? Might have to include one of those. Buttered and well away from the baked beans.

Dreamstosell · 28/06/2017 22:37

Are potato cakes the same as potato scones? I'm Scottish and very familiar with potato scones but not heard of potato cakes. And what's the fried slice a couple of people referred to? Slice of what?

April241 · 28/06/2017 22:40

Ahh darth so you make potato scones rather than potato cakes? Yum! I do love a tattie scone, used to be my breakfast of choice after nightshift. On a Morton roll of course!

April241 · 28/06/2017 22:41

dream I think they mean just slice? That's what we call it but I know just 10 mins up the road they call it square/square sausage or lorne

squoosh · 28/06/2017 22:41

Are potato cakes the same as potato scones?

No. Potato cakes are more substantial, think burger shaped. Potato scones are breadier.
