It's too hot for high drama, but nonetheless we persist (Trump cont.)

I'm all out of inspiration here. The grind is getting us all down, interspersed with terrorist attacks, but we shall overcome. In the meantime, there's gin and camaraderie.

Quite Bigly . The way people can look at exactly the same information and put such diametrically opposed interpretations on it is baffling. I was in the supermarket earlier, looking at the Express and Mail headlines and thinking "How the hell do they mentally transform the self-evident clusterfuck that is May and co's approach (or lack of approach) to the Brexit negotiations into Theresa May is negotiating a wonderful deal for us?"

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:23

"We'll have to dig a little deeper under that one section" (with added gestures.)

Trump to sell oil to Mexico

Lweji · 30/06/2017 20:25

Are you happy with the constant 180o turns?

If they make sense, yes. I have no problem with people changing their mind when presented with new information.

Which U turns have made sense for you?

Are you OK with calling the Trumpcare bill "great" when it came out of Congress and then "mean" when it got to the Senate? Does that make sense to you and why?

lionheart · 30/06/2017 20:27

It's a hideous spectrum that runs from sins of omission, statistical sleights of hand, spin and obsfuscation all the way to outright lies and fully realised propaganda.

The cry of 'fake news' when you don't want to believe the truth of what you are told is absurd. It's also the Trump card and will lose its value because it is played so often.

Post-Enlightenment indeed.

Shooting inside a hospital in the Bronx

The madness continues.

bumbleymummy · 30/06/2017 20:42

Wow. Someone seems to be in denial.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:43

Republicans push for straight repeal. A WaPo piece (from powerpost.)

Straight repeal?

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:46

Sorry if that link didn't work. I'll try again.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:49

Straight Repeal

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:51

Hmm. Successful but paywalled. You'll need to look for it. Sorry.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 20:54

A large group of Republicans are even talking about seeking to scale back or cancel the August recess to allow for some legislative progress!

3 doctors shot in a multiple shooting in New York.

Just another day in the USA....

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 30/06/2017 21:16

Finally got round to watching the NRA ad. My goodness. Like you said, a call to civil war.

Even my 9 year old DS (who heard the sound track) can see how totally and utterly mad they are. (He's now on an anti Trump, anti free-gun-availability, anti death penalty rant - and the really funny thing is I don't think I've indoctrinated him much, he's picked most of this up from Newsround!)

Orlantina · 30/06/2017 21:21

They use their media to assassinate real news. They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler. They use their movie stars and singers and comedy shows and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again. And then they use their ex-president to endorse the resistance.

"All to make them march, make them protest, make them scream racism and sexism and xenophobia and homophobia. To smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the law-abiding — until the only option left is for the police to do their jobs and stop the madness.

"And when that happens, they'll use it as an excuse for their outrage. The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth. I'm the National Rifle Association of America, and I'm freedom's safest place."

Wow......talk about 'othering'. And once you start 'othering' people...

SanFranBear · 30/06/2017 21:22

Thanks for answering ayylmaooo - and I think we're all aware he won the election... he certainly hasn't stopped mentioning it.

I meant winning in Government - as in meeting his campaign promises, enacting meaningful legislation, helping the voters who put him in power. I get that popular opinion is what it is - I just wondered how you viewed his actual presidency and how you'd categorise that as 'winning'.

Orlantina · 30/06/2017 21:28

You ever wonder how the Handmaid's tale could happen?

Just look at that advert...

I'm now counting 18 states opposed to Kobach voter data request: CA, CT, IN, KY, MA, MN, NC, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, RI, TN, UT, VA, VT, WA

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 21:38

The more states that express opposition, the more will likely join them.

BrexitentialCrisis · 30/06/2017 21:41

Aylamoooo

Are you happy that he's made the US a laughing stock around the world? (He is, you know?)

He hasn't. This is what happens when you have CNN, the WSJ and NYT bookmarked.

I'm afraid you can add dozens more news networks and respected newspapers/journals/commentaries to that list- he is widely regarded as completely ridiculous, I'm afraid. His supposed toughness and bravado gets lost outside the States and he just appears totally clueless. And fucking dangerous.

Lweji · 30/06/2017 21:44

Also, I don't live in the US or the UK.

Trust me. He's a laughing stock.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 21:47

See if you can read that WaPo article on repeal, lion. (My dismal attempts at linking having seemingly failed.)
