I'm all out of inspiration here. The grind is getting us all down, interspersed with terrorist attacks, but we shall overcome. In the meantime, there's gin and camaraderie.

I bet the Intelligence people, in preparation for that meeting, have been burying crucial info among long boring texts.

JessiCake · 30/06/2017 10:34

I only lurk on these threads but post v occasionally when enraged to the point of insanity.

Sorry but those tweets have just enraged me to the point of insanity.

AND the astounding defence of them by that Huckabee woman.

I mean I know it's her job to defend the indefensible. I know she knows the orange wanker is watching.

But PLEASE.

'The only role model I tell my kids to have is God'???!!!! What, so the President of the United States shouldn't be someone kids look up to, ever, at all?!
The President of the United States is, apparently, some kinds of 'fighter' who 'won't back down from a challenge' and 'has to sit and take personal attacks every day and he's had enough??'

Sweet Jesus.

Did he think being President was going to be like the campaign trail, hundreds of thousands of gullible fools cheering his every asinine and belligerent utterance, with nary a word of criticism from electorate or media or fellow polictians?

Oh, hang on, he probably did think that...

Does he think any other President in history has been immune from daily attacks from those who disagree with them? And that those who were attacked on a daily basis (ie all of them, cos they're politicians and THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS) ever resorted to the kind of nasty, snidey name-calling that would get my 4yo in trouble at pre-school?

How can ANYONE stand up there and spout that kind of crap in defence of him?

Agree 10000000% with Ana Navarro, the GOP need to start condemning this in the strongest POSSIBLE terms, ALL of them.

It is a shocking message to give you the billions of young people around the world, that it's OK to insult women, their appearance, 'psycho's' (has anyone else picked up that he's very rude about mental health?) anyone with a 'low IQ'... that's it's OK to just sit at a keyboard and spout malign crap about people because - oh my GOD - they may have said a 'mean thing' about you... get a fucking tougher skin, you utter utter pillock!

And Sarah Huckabee whatsit shoudl be ashamed of herself. 'Oh, I get this eveyr day and I don't go crying about it...' Erm, well, in this case the woman attacked by Trump DIDN'T 'go crying about it' - she was defended by ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET before she even said so much as a word in complaint herself... and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, are the people (wrongly) criticising your appearance a bunch of anonymous possibly-14-year-old boys on the Internet, a few random Twitter users or THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES?????????

I think therein, perhaps, lies the important difference.

Rant over. Sorry I had to get that off my chest.

Thanks for all who keep up the info on these threads.

nolongersurprised · 30/06/2017 10:51

I am a chronic lurker on this thread but just popping in to say is that the irony of it all is that 45's juvenile tweets will ensure that what he really craves - genuine adulation and respect will forever elude him.

Gumpendorf · 30/06/2017 11:42

Brzezinski and Scarborough respond to Trump's tweet. Very good opinion piece imo.

Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!

What does Federal help look like?

lionheart · 30/06/2017 12:29

Jessie no need to apologise ... rage is sometimes the only response to these things. Yours was well-channelled, though. Smile

I can't work out how Huckabee and others manage to hide their shame at all the lies they have to repeat or support.

Unless the $$$$ or the ideological drive makes it feel okay.

Orlantina · 30/06/2017 12:31

I wonder if anything Trump does becomes indefensible to his spokespeople and they resign rather than defend it?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 30/06/2017 12:37

That can't be good.

This is an interesting critique of the NRA ad

ARumWithAView · 30/06/2017 13:02

What's amazing about the 'Trump is being attacked, so must defend himself' defense (relating to these tweets) and also in his more general petulance that he's being victimised, that nobody's giving him a chance, that he's constantly being investigated, mocked, goaded and questioned... what's amazing is this wilful amnesia about what Trump himself was like when Obama was in power.

How much time did this guy waste harassing Obama about his birth certificate? I lived in the US then, and Trump just kept popping up on national media, again and again, making crackpot claims and loving the attention it got him. In 2011, he started saying Obama wasn't born in the US. Obama produced his birth certificate and Trump briefly shut up. Then, in 2012, he tweeted that a 'credible source' had told him Obama's birth cert was fake. In 2013, he suggested that it was a conspiracy that the State Health Director who verified Obama's birth certifacet had died. In 2014 he invited hackers to find Obama's college records and check his given place of birth. In 2016 he was still banging on about it and said he had his own theory and would write a book (adding "... and it will do very successfully").

All this about a complete non-issue. Nothing to do with policy or legislation or anything Obama had said or done. Trump made so much noise and got so much personal attention from it, and goaded millions of others to join him.

And now, when Trump is criticised for his own actions and words... oh, that's vicious. That's harassment. He's completely justified in responding with pathetic personal insults or suggesting the whole media should be shut down.

ARumWithAView · 30/06/2017 13:08

p.s. I only lurk on these threads but post v occasionally when enraged to the point of insanity

Gin Me too, JessiCake. This threads are amazing, and I'm not on Twitter so I appreciate all the info about relevant tweets, and all the other links, especially to US media.

ARumWithAView · 30/06/2017 13:10

Aargh: three 'amazings' in two posts? Anyone else feel like overexposure to Trump's rhetoric is fucking with their vocabulary? SAD!

MsHooliesCardigan · 30/06/2017 13:21

I have taken a short break from these threads for the sake of my sanity but OMG he just gets worse. Words just fail me.
I remember thinking when he was elected that maybe he wouldn't be as bad as everyone thought but he's ten times worse
The GOP really cannot keep defending his unhinged behaviour.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2017 13:22

ARum

Two or three times, recently, I've used the word 'Bigly' with family youngsters - in a non-political context - and they took it completely in their stride! I suppose there might have been a very faint surprise that cozie was speaking so 'en pointe' but that was all. Grin

There's the possibility of an outright repeal of Obamacare raising its head. (With replacement at a later date.)

A taste of last night.

lionheart · 30/06/2017 15:41

He is funny cozie.

Good to know it is useful Rum.

Sally Yates (the Aspen Ideas Festival) makes an interesting point about the intensified rhetoric that has now become so much a part of political discourse in order for oppositional voices to be heard. Language, as always, matters but I don't know if it can be reined in when there is some damn assault on decency and propriety every day.

That's why the op-eds and satirical shows, tweets and memes and dystopian fictions and all of the other forms that the resistance has taken count. At the very least they show different ways of speaking 'truth to power'.

'Fuck you and the horse you ride in on' also has its place. Wink

Twitter is inferring something else about to break and poss positive to Trump.
