To bake a cake with DD and take it to the mosque?

I know it's a tiny gesture in the grand scheme of things. But I thought maybe baking a cake for the worshippers to eat when they break their fast tonight might be a nice idea? We live a couple of minutes away.

It's just, in other terrorist attacks, there is an immediate outpouring of love and support. Athough it's early, there seems to be a lot less today. Coupled with the biased media reporting. Thought it might be a nice way of showing solidarity and love.

But are they going to be in mourning? Does it seem patronising? I'll absolutely accept if I am BU, please don't flame me.

I think it's exactly the kind of act of kindness is needed right now, lovely idea.

Also don't think you need to specifically wait until Iftar to deliver it. For a start, the people you are giving it to will be far more focussed on the act itself than the time of day that you give it to them.

As we can see from this thread, a gesture can be misinterpreted. Why not send a card instead - detailing your thoughts so you cannot be misunderstood.
The card will also still be there (hopefully pinned to a noticeboard) long after any cake has gone.

AccioHappiness · 19/06/2017 10:14

PixiePopPops It is a lovely idea. Bake what you like. You're a beautiful person to be doing this. x

MrsOverTheRoad · 19/06/2017 10:15

I read your OP and teared up. Do it OP...it's a nice idea...very nice.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 19/06/2017 10:18

take flowers and leave a note OP. x

UmmBum · 19/06/2017 10:19

As a a Muslim I can reassure you this is a lovely gesture that would be very well received. A card stating your intentions to show solidarity etc would be great too. Evening time would probably be best as the prayer times are close together so there is more chance of finding people about. We do really care about our Muslim and non-Muslim members of the community and want so much for peace and tolerance to exist between us. We do worry about how we are perceived so this is very reassuring as a gesture.

Would be a great idea. Much better than dates as they'd have plenty of that. Do it. Well done.

MackerelOfFact · 19/06/2017 10:27

I would do it, but not today, I think it's too soon. Wait until Eid next weekend. Lovely idea though.

PixiePopPops · 19/06/2017 10:30

I can only balme you for the media you see and the 'friends' you have in you SM feed (see attached images).

They're not my friends. I'm talking about comments on news pages.

As for the rest of your post, really?! I'm not religious either, but is this really the time? Live and let live. Spread love and show tolerance. That will do much more to fight extremism than single handedly trying to disprove and belittle all forms of religion Confused

I wondered about doing something similar, maybe taking dates as iftar starts with a date.

crocodilesoup · 19/06/2017 10:38

I would be wary of eating food brought in these circumstances. I would feel bad about that, but I wouldn't eat it.

Karramaboo · 19/06/2017 10:47

PixiePopPops I'm Muslim and honestly it's the thought that counts. A cake of any size, shape or color or anything else for that matter is perfect because it shows you care. Please trust me when I say whatever you do, it's the motivation that matters and will be very gratefully received. Take a look at this article about something that happened at my cousin's mosque btw, every gesture of kindness is gratefully received.

Another Muslim here, I think it's such a lovely gesture OP, it would be well received anytime but especially today I think it would be really appreciated.

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2017 10:58

I think your motivation is good, but I would take them something sealed if you wish to take something. A cake could be another attack and people not wish to eat it in case it contained something that caused them harm.

SprinklesandIcecream · 19/06/2017 10:58

Lovely idea Pixie. If you were coming at our local mosque we would greatly receive it (and also invite you to open fast with us and share some food all round ☺️).. I

KnitFastDieWarm · 19/06/2017 11:01

I think that's a lovely idea, a traditional British non-alcoholic cake (tea loaf is very traditional for funeral teas so might be appropriate without being too 'celebration cake') and a lovely card would be a great idea.

Syc4moreTrees · 19/06/2017 11:08

seaweed I sort of agree with you on this one.

I probably wouldn't do it, or as others have said take a sealed product in case people are dubious of eating home baked cakes. Or maybe a card, but again, I don't think it's great that we feel we have to tell people from other cultures or religions that we accept them, I would hope most people view this an implied.

Makes me feel uneasy, but can't really articulate why.

OohMavis · 19/06/2017 11:12

Don't overthink it, cake is good.

Changebagsandgladrags · 19/06/2017 11:12

I think this is a really nice idea.

JigglyTuff · 19/06/2017 11:19

Lovely thing to do. Do it

StatelessPrincess · 19/06/2017 11:20

I don't think it's great that we feel we have to tell people from other cultures or religions that we accept them, I would hope most people view this as implied IMO a lot of Muslims don't feel it is unfortunately. I do think it depends on where you live though.

I was tempted to do this myself. Unfortunately, the website for my local mosque put me off. It had some basic information on Islam and I was not impressed with all the stuff about obeying husbands.

Troutfin27 · 19/06/2017 11:26

Regarding the reporting of this case, it should be reported differently to, for example, the Manchester and London Bridge attacks purely because the perpetrator has been arrested and will, presumably, be brought to trial. In attacks where the perpetrators have died at the scene, there is no legal process limiting what the press can report.

That said, I wouldn't deny there being any bias but there are also important legal constraints at work here.
FWIW, I think taking cake is a positive gesture and imagine most recipients would receive it as such.
