To think that the situation in London could end up with riots?

The social situation in London following this week's terrible fire is deteriorating fast. On top of the recent disastrous general election, a section of the population feel alienated. Am I being unreasonable to think we could end up with riots?

OP posts:
makeourfuture · 16/06/2017 13:54

There will be peaceful, firm and constant pressure.

ArgyMargy · 16/06/2017 13:55

Doesn't help when media talk it all up. Really pissed off with BBC reporter this morning going on about how tensions will rise even more as days go by. Why fuel the fire (no pun intended) - so irresponsible.

The80sweregreat · 16/06/2017 13:58

Agree that this hot spell wont help matters. The ones living in blocks that have been newly cladded will be in turmoil ( i know i would be)
but taking to the streets doesnt solve much either.
Action needs to be seen to be taken within days otherwise it may well start to kick off. The establishment wont be affected by any riots anyway, they are always protected as it is.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 16/06/2017 14:00

... and that this shows how, contrary to what the government and media say, council housing has been colonised by immigrants.

Council housing goes to those most in need. The fella arriving from war torn Syria, with nowhere else to go is in greater need than the local who is staying in her mum's overcrowded flat.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 16/06/2017 14:00

Why do some people think rioting is an acceptable a way to respond to a tragedy?

This is how powerless and disenfranchised people always respond when they believe the system is opposed to them. Do you understand why Egyptian bread riots have run for decades? Do you understand why the LA riots followed the murder of Rodney King?

The UK is not special. The humans here are the same as the humans everywhere else. The right to food, the right to be safe from violence - the right to shelter is just as fundamental as these. Right now, hundreds of thousands of people believe they are living in death traps. They have spent a decade watching the financial crisis gut their standard of living while a mile away their billionaire neighbours became richer than ever.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 16/06/2017 14:00

make you are lovely. I think there will be that too. But maybe riots too.

There are experts who could help the government soothe this. I hope, but doubt, they are consulting them pdq

BubblesBuddy · 16/06/2017 14:01

Radio 5 has ramped up the hot feelings all day. It is very wrong to do this and it is not a majority view. It's just the hot heads who get interviewed. Riots will put the police against rioters and this won't help anyone.

The death figures are thought to be around 76. It is impossible to search this building quickly. It is clearly unsafe.

BeyondStrongAndStable · 16/06/2017 14:02

I just saw there is a march being organised for tonight

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 16/06/2017 14:03

Yes there is a march tonight. It doesn't mean it will be a riot and people have a right to march

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 16/06/2017 14:04

Just to be clear, I do think things may calm down in the short term. In fact I think the collapse of May's government is more likely than a riot. Ironically a riot would probably strengthen her slightly in the short term as property damage will horrify many onlookers as much as the deaths of ~100 people has horrified the residents of tower blocks.

(Not that everybody isn't horrified, of course they are. But there are thousands of people who have to put their children to bed in buildings just like Grenfell Tower, and what they feel is much worse than what the rest of us feel.)

user1491260401 · 16/06/2017 14:04

@user1497617091

That is something I had noticed (that all the residents who have had information published about them seem to be immigrants) and was curious about.

one possible idea I had about this (which may well be complete rubbish, I was just trying to think of possibilities) was that perhaps this is because immigrants are more likely to be legally homeless? If you are born here then for many people (not all obviously) it is possible to stay living with your parents or other family members until you get an income and can arrange to move out into your own housing. You might be officially overcrowded with your family, but wouldn't be homeless. If you arrive here without anywhere to live then presumably you are more likely to be legally homeless and elligible for council housing?

MinisterForSmallFountains · 16/06/2017 14:06

use1497617091 where is the money going to come from for all of the refurbishment of this block - not from those who were living in it

What an exceptionally unpleasant thing to say.

megletthesecond · 16/06/2017 14:06

holdme yy, never thought I'd say it but we need some rain now.

Crispsheets · 16/06/2017 14:07

There will always be idiots who riot. Who use it as an opportunity to loot and destroy.
Not to protest.

user1497617091 · 16/06/2017 14:08

The comment that "Council housing goes to those most in need. The fella arriving from war torn Syria, with nowhere else to go is in greater need than the local who is staying in her mum's overcrowded flat." is nonsensical.

Council housing is a limited resource. It is not incumbent on those living in the U.K. to fund housing for the whole world. The post-WW2 social welfare system (including provision of council housing) is based on everyone accepting a common safety net for those living here. I give a warning to those on the left - your love of immigration is aiding the Conservatives in killing off the U.K.'s social welfare system.

Grenfell Tower is a tragedy for those living in it. However, there there is a greater tragedy that is going on for the past twenty years in London which sees young local families living in overcrowded conditions while third world immigrants sweep into the city and absorb hundreds of millions in taxpayer funding.

Albadross · 16/06/2017 14:08

Riots tend to damage the communities of those rioting, rather than send any message to the powers that be. I hope this doesn't happen for everyone's sake.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 16/06/2017 14:09

Why is it posters users12234r4rxxxx always start bringing up immigration? Hhhmmmm

BeyondStrongAndStable · 16/06/2017 14:11

I didn't mean anyone shouldn't march, was just pointing out that there is one. Hopefully people will just angrily march rather than full-on riot. I can absolutely understand why people would riot, but it won't make anything better :(

MrsOverTheRoad · 16/06/2017 14:12

I said this today OP. I said that if the weather heats up then it could happen. :(

Scribblegirl · 16/06/2017 14:12

I wouldn't riot, but I am planning on joining the mass protest on July 1st. This is about something bigger than party politics, something has to change in our country's attitude. To quote Pulp 'We won't use bombs, we won't use guns, we'll use the one thing we've got more of - that's our minds'.

MrsOverTheRoad · 16/06/2017 14:13

Conned I don;t like the way people do that either but please don;t knock the numbers. Some people use them because they have problems with passwords or can't work out how to change names.

What an exceptionally unpleasant thing to say.

It's truly obscene. I wish we could just do away with the usereleventymillion posts, they add nothing of value.

Also the ghouls saying "they're clearly all immigrants" should consider that they are certainly not. They are clearly mostly not white. That does not mean they are immigrants.
