To hate Lily Allen

I can't stand her. Always popping up somewhere that she's not required to put her 2 cents in. It's like her music is so shit and unpopular she's decided to just stick her oar in wherever she can now. I've never disliked anyone this strongly before (that I've never met!)

OP posts:

""Lily Allen's only been interested in this after the fire.""

She's constantly vocal about social justice/funding etc issues.

She isn't as slick, or gets it completely right, but when questioned she gives better answers than any Tory Politician has, over the reality of their policies.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 10:14

She's mouthy and she's not that intellectual but she is compassionate and she tries to use her platform to bring about positive change.

I can't see what on earth there is to hate about her.

flowersformyweeds · 16/06/2017 10:14

Oh sorry. Someone's already posted that.

ShatnersWig · 16/06/2017 10:14

I've not seen or heard every news programme but I would tend to say we've heard far more from ordinary people, residents of the tower and nearby than anyone else with regards this tragedy. There's been a fair smattering of experts. I'm not sure any celebrity needs to speak up on their behalf. Who we have heard very, very little from - and in some cases no doubt advised accordingly by lawyers - are Kensington council, the tower management company, the company that did the refurbishment etc.

As I said, one third of what she said was valid. But she goes and destroys any possible good with the other two thirds.

ShatnersWig · 16/06/2017 10:16

Flowers See, you're falling into the trap yourself. The headline says she was pulled AFTER her comments. You say DUE to her comments. Two totally, totally different things.

tiptopteepe · 16/06/2017 10:17

YABU celebrities are as entitled to opinions as the rest of us. People pay more attention to what they say and are always asking them for opinions. Its not just them thinking their opinions are super important its other people as well!! They are just human beings who cant win for losing sometimes whatever they do. People say they dont want their celebrities to deliver fake publicity encouraging nonesense but then get horrendously angry when a celebrity does dare to speak with passion in a way that isnt carefully worded.
I feel incredibly sorry for Lily Allen. She has had so much hatred directed at her for not much at all to be frankly honest. No one would say the things that people have said to her online to anyone in real life face to face. People forget shes a human being.

ssd · 16/06/2017 10:18

Lily Allen made some perfectly good points, good for channel 4 to talk to her and good for her in speaking out.

I feel there's more to this op than just hating Lily allen.

Allthebestnamesareused · 16/06/2017 10:18

YABU coz I love her.

Each to their own and all that.

I've never felt the need to tell a group of random strangers on the internet of my dislike for a person though. Hmm

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/06/2017 10:21

Yes, she has been vocal about many issues.

But so have been the residents. They had their blogs. I do think it's patronising from Lily Allen to assume she can be the one to represent them when they are perfectly capable to do that themselves.

i just think she lacks humility.

StarHeartDiamond · 16/06/2017 10:22

Some people genuinely feel passionate about a particular situation because it truly resonates with them and they feel they should speak out.

But some are self-appointed and self serving and love a soapbox. All the talk, no walk.

Eye of the beholder and all that...

wowfudge · 16/06/2017 10:22

Birdsgotta - where are you that they have been selling three bed family homes? That's horrendous.

LakieLady · 16/06/2017 10:25

I quite like her, and the way she is filled with rage and indignation when she perceives an injustice.

I find that infinitely preferable to the airbrushed blandness off the average x-factor winner, or the sanctimonious twattery of the Bonos of the world.

BigYellowJumper · 16/06/2017 10:27

chardonnay agreed.

lakie if she kept up that rage on issues and actually followed through with practical long-term steps, I might have more time for her.

hackmum · 16/06/2017 10:33

Hermagsjesty: 'The same people who deride champagne socialists are usually also the ones quick to talk about the "politics of envy" when poor people try to address inequality.'

This is very true. People who care passionately about injustice or inequality tend to make people who don't care about those things very uncomfortable so they resort to cheap insults.

barrygibbscheekbones · 16/06/2017 10:35

Calyrical according to Wikipedia, Lily Allen did indeed spend her early years living in a council estate.

Birdsgottaf1y · 16/06/2017 11:00

""Birdsgotta - where are you that they have been selling three bed family homes? That's horrendous.""

Liverpool, they went for 35k each.

Three bed houses with front and back gardens, new kitchens/bathrooms and outside newly painted. Because of the bedroom tax they can't let anyone under occupy them, so they can't rent to anyone with less than three children.

We are heading for the first time on Merseyside towards a housing crisis, just because of the bedroom tax.

They won't pay the full rent of £82 a week, for a three bed house, but
HB will pay, £105+ for a private 2 bed.

So people are now renting them from the private LL and HB are paying £20 a week more for the same house. It also means that, the extra £20 a week to someone on low wages will mean that they can't take a job.
There's five gone in my street and mine will be sold when i move out.

But it's built an excellent portfolio for someone.

Birdsgottaf1y · 16/06/2017 11:03

""I do think it's patronising from Lily Allen to assume she can be the one to represent them when they are perfectly capable to do that themselves.""

Well no-one has listened for nearly five years, why did it take now dead children seen screaming from the windows, on day time television to now be allowed a voice?

BigYellowJumper · 16/06/2017 11:04

But birds they do have a voice after the fire. No, that is not ok, absolutely not.

But the world is listening now, so not sure why they need Lily Allen there too.

TheWitTank · 16/06/2017 11:09

I don't get why people don't understand that they haven't yet GOT numbers. You can't just throw a rough figure out to grieving families when the recovery and identification of bodies is still ongoing, most of the bodies are sadly not recognisable or actually still intact and you are trying to trace relatives, obtain samples, track down occupants who may have stayed elsewhere or missing people who may have been staying at the tower but who were not occupants. Its really really difficult. I can understand the community being desperate for answers but they should get the RIGHT answers, not figures plucked from guess work.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/06/2017 11:16

Champagne socialists don't bother me.

But these priviliged celebs who try to pass themselves off as one of the people are extremely annoying. And so many of them do it nowadays.

BlondeB83 · 16/06/2017 11:18

YABU

MrsPeelyWaly · 16/06/2017 11:23

I don't get why people don't understand that they haven't yet GOT numbers

Exactly, and it says a lot about Lilly when its obvious she doesn't seem to understand that.

Birdsgottaf1y · 16/06/2017 11:23

""But birds they do have a voice after the fire.""

Was any invited onto Newsnight? Are they doing a 'special' so they airtime without comments being misconstrued or not reported?

In an early News expert a former resident who is active in the community said that anyone who kicked up to much of a fuss about anything got bullied out of the residents group and out of the flats.

I only saw him give one interview then that was it.

It was said that they man whose flat the fire started in ran out of the building. He didn't, he knocked on neighbours doors and whilst one phoned the fir brigade, he carried on knocking.

So there was incorrect information being reported, early on.

What is going to keep this going is the fact of the Fire brigade thinking that the fire safety procedures would click in, so they told people to stay put, which led to their death.

They won't take the blame, other than that, do i think that this would have been buck passed? Of course i do, its already been said that this isn't a political issue. It's a loss of power, issue and given that 'the person is political', then it is a political issue.

Tm can now rush into a partnership with DUP, because we've got to get Parliament reconvened.

Most of those people who let go of the hands of their children and their neighbours children in the blackness, who are now dead, are going to need the nonexistent MH services that "there wasn't a magic money tree" for (TM to a Nurse).

TheStoic · 16/06/2017 11:34

Why is it ok to heap abuse on a woman just because she's not here to defend herself?

You hate her? What on earth is wrong with you?

llangennith · 16/06/2017 11:35

Every time I hear or read yet another emotional rant from Lilly Alan I think 'there she goes again'. She's an annoying self-serving child who needs to grow up.
