To hate Lily Allen

I can't stand her. Always popping up somewhere that she's not required to put her 2 cents in. It's like her music is so shit and unpopular she's decided to just stick her oar in wherever she can now. I've never disliked anyone this strongly before (that I've never met!)

Mumma well said!

ILoveDolly · 16/06/2017 07:48

I think anyone who is trying to use their celebrity status to raise awareness of a cause or give a voice to the unheard is OK. Probably better than the ones who just sit on their moneypile.

MacarenaFerreiro · 16/06/2017 07:54

She's a bit of a rent a gob, isn't she? As my dad used to say, she opens her mouth and lets her belly rumble.

Nobody really cares what she thinks. I think she is trying to reimagine herself as a cross between Mother Theresa, Princess Diana and some political animal. We're all supposed to kneel in awe and say how clever, and how compassionate and how amazing she is.

she'd get on really well with that jack monroe one

I saw LA bring interviewed by Jon Snow and I re-watched it this morning on YouTube.

She said she grew up in that area, implying she lived in social housing with her mother and possibly in poverty as a child.

I thought her comments about details of the number of people who have died not being released were crass. Numerous threads in recent weeks have discussed how people need to be identified and families informed after such horrific events.

At the moment I'm not sure the authorities even know exactly who was in the building and who got out and the fire service have said that recovering the bodies is going to take a long time.

LA implied not releasing the numbers was a cover up and she actually said it was micro managing the grief of the survivors.

Calyrical · 16/06/2017 07:57

I don't think the death toll is downplayed at all.

Having said that I do wonder if the fire had happened in the shabby back streets of the north east or somewhere in Glasgow, or Blackpool, would it have attracted such publicity?

I hope so.

BreconBeBuggered · 16/06/2017 07:58

Hang on: unknown numbers of innocent people have died here, completely avoidably, and you can find it in you to be angry at Lily Allen? Even if you can't stand anything she says or does, can you not just filter it out? It's not as if she's someone like Farage, shoved into our faces whether we like it or not. I find your stance very strange indeed, OP.

BigYellowJumper · 16/06/2017 08:01

brecon as I said, you are also reacting to this thread. your reaction could be seen as strange by the same token.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/06/2017 08:01

All these fucking people hating a celebrity who is actually doing some good instead of the self serving wankers who are responsible.

Wtf is wrong with you all??

She grew up round there

She has opened her home to survivors

She has used the fact that she has a voice to speak up for the survivors who are treated as an emotional freak show by the media (the same media whos ignored their pleas for help over the years don't forget

What exactly about any of those statements makes you hate her??

As for lefty piece of shit - you really showed your colours there, didn't you?
I bet you were on the thread saying how all lefties are nasty, right?
Then you come out with that? Hmm

Save your hate for the system, and the people, that has allowed this awful, terrible fire to kill hundreds of people.

Save your hate for people like Britain FIrst, who rather than help, would rather goad Muslims that are actually helping

TheNaze73 · 16/06/2017 08:01

YABU. If her celebrity off of the back of a couple of twee little songs 10 years ago, can help the effort at Genfell Tower, then fair play to her.
If you don't like her, mute her.

MrsTrentReznor · 16/06/2017 08:02

She's just the worst type of virtue signaller going.
Very public offer of shelter via Twitter. (Has this been fulfilled?) People that have lost family and homes aren't going to be on Twitter wondering if Lily Allen has offered a room, or Jamie Oliver has offered a meal at his restaurant 1.5 miles away from the estate.
The only media coverage I've seen of Adele was fuzzy candid pictures of her getting her hands dirty.
What is needed now is cash to get the survivors housed and clothed (evening standard dispossessed fund is a good starting point by the way)
The survivors are priority. The identification of the victims and missing will come. Would Lily have the fire brigade enter a dangerous building? It needs to be made safe before they can retrieve and count the dead. (I'd imagine that's a hard job that can't be done quickly, imagine the emotional load on those brave men and women.) Not everything is a conspiracy.

GreenRut · 16/06/2017 08:04

I'm not mad about her generally, but I feel strongly that this story must stay very clearly at the top of the headlines until answers are given, and people are held accountable for decisions they have made to put aesthetics and making the estate more palatable to richer neighbours, above those of the safety of the tenants. And if that means Lily Allen spouting off to big media outlets then I'm all for it.

LordTrash · 16/06/2017 08:04

I don't hate Lily Allen. I think she means well, and we need as many well-meaning people as we can get.

But she does seem to see herself as some kind of unofficial 'voice of London' and she really isn't.

Holz657 · 16/06/2017 08:04

Are you a Daily Fail readers

SemiNormal · 16/06/2017 08:04

For someone high profile therefore to imply that the slow update on the official death toll is somehow an attempt at downplaying it is unhelpful because it is stoking up anger over something that cannot be done any faster and that people are already understandably upset about - Absolutely this and there are already mobs of angry people who have organised protests over it all. Of course people are understandably angry and upset (to put it mildly) but before anything much can be done everyone needs to be accounted for properly (via DNA if needed), there needs to be a proper investigation into what happened etc ... these things take time, an angry mob doesn't speed up that process.

TeachesOfPeaches · 16/06/2017 08:06

I listened to the interview and switched off when she made out she knew what it was like to be poor in that area. Even the interviewer said 'really?'

She was born into great privilege.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/06/2017 08:06

And yeah, I do wonder about people who would rather slate a celebrity who is actually doing something to help, than get angry at the fucked up system and the ignoring of peoples voices that is the issue here.

Why do you hate someone who is doing their best to help?

A better and much more understandable thread would have been "AIBU to hate Paul Golding?"- where your hate for him, huh?

Or is bashing Muslims ok, but actually housing people is somehow offensive to you?

Do you not think it shows an interesting mindset, to hate someone who is helping, rather than hate a right wing bigot??

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/06/2017 08:11

Britain First bait Muslims who were helping Grenfell Tower fire victims

Wheres all the hate for this disgusting man??!

But yeah lets all hate on a lefty woman, while this disgusting bigot isn't even mentioned! Hmm

SemiNormal · 16/06/2017 08:12

And yeah, I do wonder about people who would rather slate a celebrity who is actually doing something to help, than get angry at the fucked up system and the ignoring of peoples voices that is the issue here - What exactly is she doing? She should be helping the people have a platform to speak, not speak for them aligning their plight with her very obvious political views.

SemiNormal · 16/06/2017 08:15

... and FWIW I'd have a lot more time for her if she actually came out and said how many refugees she had housed. She said she would welcome them into her home yet whenever questioned she never answers how many (if any) are living with her and her representitives always say 'no comment'. (I'm speaking about the refugees in Calais BTW not the people made homeless from Grenfell)

BreconBeBuggered · 16/06/2017 08:15

BigYellow, what an odd thing to say. Nobody 'reacting' to threads = no MN. Agreeing with OPs, especially in AIBU, is not compulsory.

Crispbutty · 16/06/2017 08:17

"Lily Allen has a voice that other's don't. "

That's true.. others CAN sing.

BigYellowJumper · 16/06/2017 08:18

brecon is that all you have to say to people? That their response is 'odd'?

Nobody starting threads also equals no mn, obviously. So why shouldn't the OP start a thread about her?

holz she's on the front page of the mail, so not sure how relevant that is.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/06/2017 08:20

Well at least she's fucking speaking though?

We need everyone to come out, rich, poor, left, right, famous and not famous, and demand fucking answers!

I welcome anyones voice to keep the action rolling.

The whole damn system needs sorting, every single fucking bit of it.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 16/06/2017 08:21

Still no one caring to comment on why you are all hating on Lily Allen, but still not a peep about Paul Golding??

He is someone definitely deserving of bile like "piece of shit" (said upthread about Lily Allen btw!)
