To hate Lily Allen

I can't stand her. Always popping up somewhere that she's not required to put her 2 cents in. It's like her music is so shit and unpopular she's decided to just stick her oar in wherever she can now. I've never disliked anyone this strongly before (that I've never met!)

I think her heart is in the right place and she does make valid points, but I think she unintentionally gets peoples backs up because of her upbringing and lifestyle... I don't think people like the platform from which she publicly speaks, if that makes sense?

ChuffMuffin · 16/06/2017 12:58

Just to clarify, when I say lifestyle I mean the daughter of a famous actor and a film producer, and lifestyle as in she's not "working class".

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 12:59

I think most people understand the difference between party political and political. Confused

I can't understand why people are pretending that there is no political background or implications to what happened.

This was a man-made disaster. The Grenfell action group campaigned constantly and yet they were dismissed and ignored. Of course we should ask why.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 13:01

From another thread on this:

From: Grenfell action Group
To: [email protected]
Subject: Re: Grenfell Tower- Ongoing concerns!
Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2014

Dear Ben,

I am very sorry to trouble you again and I hope that you can understand that my reason for doing so is entirely genuine.

A number of residents of Grenfell Tower are very concerned at the fact that the new improvement works to Grenfell Tower have turned our building into a fire trap.

There is only one entry and exit to the tower block itself and, in the event of a fire, the LFB could only gain access to the entrance to the building by climbing four flights of narrow stairs.

On top of this the fire escape exit on the walkway level has now been sealed.

Residents of Grenfell Tower do not have any confidence that our building has been satisfactorily assessed to cope with the new improvement works and we are seeking a meeting with the Chief Fire Officer from Kensington Fire Station so that these concerns can be addressed.

Thank you for your continued assistance with this matter.

Kind regards,

Grenfell Action Group

In the interests of balance, the fire service was absolutely decimated by John Prescott.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 13:08

I think most people understand the difference between party political and political.

Maybe not.

McTufty · 16/06/2017 13:13

histinyhands

Well yes but I do think that from what I've seen, the "don't politicise it" comments have been made about those who have said that this is due to tory cost cutting etc.

If anyone says we shouldn't discuss the state letting people live in a firetrap to save £5000 then words fail me, though I've not really seen that.

mummag · 16/06/2017 13:14

Please explain the john Prescott comment

histinyhandsarefrozen · 16/06/2017 13:17

I dont like it being turned into a political event.
No it should not be a political event.

We don't know exactly whose decisions and why they were yet (although we may guess) but yes, it is political.

Deadsouls · 16/06/2017 13:22

Do you mean that you hate Lilly Allen? Or does she annoy you?

FreddoBaggyMac · 16/06/2017 13:31

Didn't have much of an opinion of her either way until now, but I've just watched the channel 4 interview with her (linked earlier in this thread) and I think what she says is fantastic. She's not claiming to be a politically correct politician, just someone speaking out from her heart for the people who are there. I think most of the points she makes are extremely valid.

ClappingThighs · 16/06/2017 13:41

Lana you've clearly jumped in mid-thread without reading. Thanks for that. This isn't a thread about Grenfell, there are plenty of those. This is about Lily Allen and the fact she annoys me, nothing more. What prompted me to start this thread was seeing her on the news 'reporting' on Grenfell, this still doesn't make this a thread about those events. If I'd have started a thread praising the firemen and women would you have said 'how awful for you to be thinking of them and not the poor victims?' Don't think so. My thoughts on LA do not downplay my feelings for Grenfell, refugees, Calais, etc etc. If I wanted this to be one of those threads I would have jumped on an already existing one.

I'd also never name call. I don't like her or what she says but she's not a cunt or a bitch. That would mean I really did have a personal hatred against her, which I don't. She just bloody irritates me.

If you're so upset about not mentioning Paul Golding, Britains First, Theresa May or Scooby Doo, why don't you start a thread yourself? After all that's what MN is here for?

I think many of you have also taken my use of 'hate' a little too literally. I meant it in the same context as 'oo I really hate when DH does that' - doesn't mean I want my DH to drop dead and disappear off the face of the earth. Let's be realistic here people.

KERALA1 · 16/06/2017 13:45

Its a pretty mean thread to start though. She's inoffensive enough and means well at least she is speaking out about things she feels passionately about.

She is a real person you know. How would you feel if you bumped into her now? I had this with Amanda Holden, standing next to her in a shop just a normal (albeit glam) mum with kids same age as mine who were bickering like mine were all buying the same stuff and faffing about getting it all into the car. I am so glad I never posted that I "hated" her or similar.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 16/06/2017 13:45

good for her

she uses her privilege for good not evil

plus she's fearless

the absolute shit she gets on twitter, yet she keeps on keepin on

HandbagKrabby · 16/06/2017 13:55

Yeah why would people link your I hate Lily Allen thread to Grenfell when that's why she was on your telly for you to moan about in the first place?

If you don't want people to call you out for saying you hate someone, don't say it. But, you know, we shouldn't pick apart how you word things should we? Just the Lily Allens of the world.

frenboop · 16/06/2017 13:55

the absolute shit she gets on twitter, yet she keeps on keepin on

How wonderfully brave.

Hmm
ClappingThighs · 16/06/2017 13:56

Muddha she uses her privilege to her advantages mostly, not necessarily for good (or for the good of everyone anyway)

A PP mentioned that she thinks she is the 'voice of London' which hit the nail on the head. She isn't, and shouldn't claim that her thoughts represent an entire nation.

OP posts:
frenboop · 16/06/2017 13:57

It's twitter that does this to celebs. They live in an echo chamber and end up with a completely overblown sense of their own importance. Then they go on the news and people not on Twitter go "wtf?"

ClappingThighs · 16/06/2017 13:58

handbag if I wasn't open to opinions I wouldn't have started the thread 😀 We're not here (MN) to pick apart people's wordings, but taking them so literally when you know it not how they're meant, just to further your own argument, is pretty silly.

OP posts:
ClappingThighs · 16/06/2017 13:59

Also to say that a man wouldn't get the same grief for the same comments is laughable. I don't care if she's woman, man, bot or guinea pig. I believe she's wrong in what she's saying and would call out anyone doing the same.

OP posts:
BoldKitties · 16/06/2017 13:59

I completely agree with absolutely everything Lana has said. Also ghosty and Muddha. There's nothing I can add to their excellent posts, to be honest.

Oh, except this. She's a filthy piece of lefty shit. Can't stand the bitch. Fucking hell. How vile. Though in a way I appreciate the honesty and kind of wish that post had been left to stand. It's good to have in writing what some on the right really think of the left. And it would be nice, the next time someone starts a thread about how nasty 'lefties' are, to have that post to direct them to.

ClappingThighs · 16/06/2017 14:01

boldkitties feel free to start one yourself seeing as that's not what this ones about.

OP posts:
BoldKitties · 16/06/2017 14:18

Well ClappingThighs, threads evolve and people contribute as they see fit. You don't actually get to control what people post.

Start one what? Thread? I didn't say anything about the need for a thread about anything. I was responding to posts on this thread. That okay with you?

SewMeARiver · 16/06/2017 14:24

YABextremelyU

I had no time for Lilly Allen previously, but seeing the JS interview my respect for her has climbed immensely.

I always find it is quite cynical people who indulge in denigrating anyone who makes a fuss about issues typically associated with leftist ideals. In fact it seems to be all the rage atm. Charlotte Church and Russel Brand are among a few celebrities have come under quite intense ridicule, if not outright character assassination for vocally taking up the causes of the underprivileged in this country. They appear to irritate people. But why? Who the fuck else is going to shine a mirror on the inequalities experienced by many people in this country, when, by all accounts, the formal routes and modes of democracy cannot be depended on to do so?

Yes she spoke unwisely. However, I could tell she felt real emotion and common feeling. I prefer that to some carefully scripted, inflexible and rehearsed speech like that given by the leaders of KC council, Sadiq Khan and Teresa May. Who the fuck wants to hear that old line of 'lessons being learnt' yet again, who? I'm sure those affected appreciated her putting herself forward for potential ridicule in order to say the things they could not.

For you to say you hate her for taking up causes is silly. I regulary march for causes I am passionate about, and there are a good many. If I had a higher profile, you'd be accusing me of being an attention seeker because I would take advantage of my profile to publicably air grievances I sympathise with.

BigYellowJumper · 16/06/2017 14:29

sew No problem with people saying stuff, but I've never seen Russel Brand or Lily Allen ever stick with a cause for longer than a few weeks and then actually do any real work to make realistic changes.

Sadiq Khan didn't sound like he was giving platitudes. I think he understands the issues quite well, but obviously he can't mouth off in the same way Lily Allen can.
