To not get the hysteria over the DUP?

Cropping up on Facebook statuses today, photos with rainbows to stand against them.
I admit until last week I knew nothing about them. A quick look at their website does not show them to be homophobic, racist etc. And surely Teresa May has bigger worries than LGBT rights? They have 10 seats!
I'm not posting to be goady, I genuinely don't get it?

OP posts:
Pinkheart5919 · 12/06/2017 11:56

Do you really expect the website to say we hate gays, and fuck off if your a woman and want an abortion?

Why should Teresa may not care about rights for gay people? Yes she might have bigger worries but she wants to share a bed with a party that hold some fucking outrageous views and if she doesn't think the same way why is she cuddling up to them?

Pannnn · 12/06/2017 11:58

They will NOT advertise their "socially conservative" (v diplomatic) aspect on their website. As Owen Jones noted "they are the provisional wing of the seventeenth century" i.e a bunch of terrorist-laden knuckle-draggers.

It's a mark of the politician who invites this crew to have an inflience on the country so she can stay in power. Yes also claim she is "acting in teh interests of the nation."
Bollocks May.

Alittlepotofrosie · 12/06/2017 11:59

Isn't it more a case that by forming a government with them it puts the Good Friday Agreement into jeopardy?

Pannnn · 12/06/2017 12:06

I think it means the Westminster govt looses a position of 'neutrality' over NI and the degree of 'jeapordy' depends on how the other parties think it's a real threat and also how long it will last.

Al ot of Tories will not wish to contemplate any arrangement with folk who they wouldn't hire as servants, for fear of scaring the horses.
But the alternative as another GE and a Labour victory.

araiwa · 12/06/2017 12:08

perhaps your ignorance is the reason you dont understand the many reasonable objections to the DUP and their policies

have you tried researching them to find out why they are so horrid

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:08

"Hysteria", how fitting.

Well, if you are not a woman, you cannot be hysteric, and if you are a woman who had a hysterectomy, and can thus never be in need of an abortion, you would also not get what is so bad about the DUP.

Makes sense.

Boopboopboop · 12/06/2017 12:10

OP why don't you do some research on their policies and why it's bad for the NI peace process if you "don't get the hysteria"?

lovelyupnorth · 12/06/2017 12:10

they make UKIP look left wing. if you are a women in Northern Ireland who wants an abortion you'd know why they are awful.

never mind the possible collapse of the good friday agreemenet

Boopboopboop · 12/06/2017 12:12

For fucks sake I'm shocked by your laziness and ignorance. Read a paper? Do your own research?

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:13

I am from Germany, didn't know about the DUP and went to Wikipedia to educate myself. Took me five minutes to find out why everyone here is so worried.

Has it ever occurred to you that perhaps their own website is NOT the best place to research a party if you don't want to read ten pages of text?

Of course they won't have "We are womanhaters who want to force women to give birth to unwanted fetuses, and also we are homophobic and racist" written over it in big, flaming letters.

That'll all be somewhere there, but you'd have to look closely to find it, which you obviously didn't.

MrsWooster · 12/06/2017 12:14

Well Said, virgin

53rdWay · 12/06/2017 12:15

If you hadn't heard about them until last week and all you know about them now is from a quick look at their website, then maybe there is some background you're lacking here? Just a thought.

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:16

... actually, they are of the "let's kill women by denying them abortions even when their lives are in danger, and also, let's make women go through all the pain and danger and injury of childbirth when we very well know the baby will not survice as it has been diagnosed with a lethal condition", aren't they?

Perhaps I should do some more reseaerch to be able to make more precise statements on how much, exactly, they hate women.

UndersecretaryofWhimsy · 12/06/2017 12:16

Gee, cos it's not like there are any actual Northern Irish people around who KNOW what it's like to be governed by them, or anything.

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/06/2017 12:17

The NI Assembly passed a mot I on to make gay marriage legal. They had the numbers. They had the cross party support. The DUP blocked the legistlation, single handedly using The Petition of Concern.

They were very homophobic and not very "democratic" that day. So yes YABU OP for not doing your homework.

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/06/2017 12:18

That should be "motion", not "mot I on".

Dawndonnaagain · 12/06/2017 12:18

Oh good grief, are the tories still sending folks onto the site to make them look reasonable?

Sunnywithadashofgin · 12/06/2017 12:18

I am Northern Irish and I am quite pleased at the media attention they are getting. It is shining a light on how oppressive they are, which is obviously accepted here.

LittleMissCrappy · 12/06/2017 12:19

Vestalvirgin, is this enough for you:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-20321741

implantsandaDyson · 12/06/2017 12:19

Oh their own website doesn't point out their bigotry- no shit Sherlock. You're not really firing on all cylinders today dingit? "I'm not posting to be goady" - my arse.

NameChanger22 · 12/06/2017 12:19

I assume you are a white, middle class, straight man. Either that or really, really stupid.

toooldforthisshirt37 · 12/06/2017 12:20

I live in Northern Ireland. Members of this party insist on creationism being part of the Giant's Causeway display information, have recently stated that a woman breast feeding in public is "doing it for reasons other than feeding the child, exhibitionism for example". Don't come to NI on a Sunday, everything, every damn thing is shut until 1pm. Last week a prescribed terrorist organisation was posting flyers through letter boxes telling people to vote for this party, the party would not reject this publically when requested to do so on radio. (JC meeting Sinn Fein doesn't look so bad now does it?) They repeatedly block marriage equality and modern abortion laws here on the basis of their own Christianity. Oh and I haven't mentioned the RHI, NAMA or Redsky scandals where this party have lined their pockets! For what is it worth buckle up Britain!

bobblyorangerug · 12/06/2017 12:20

Actually do some proper research, then come back.

For a start they have campaigned against both abortion and same sex marriage. They have also called for creationism to be taught in NI schools.

They are ridiculous.

Eve · 12/06/2017 12:25

maybe look at the stance on abortion of all the churches and other political parties in NI and not just restrict yourself to complaining about the DUP. Have a look at the abortion laws in the Republic of Ireland.

How about other than being outraged you do something about it... as women all over Ireland have been trying to for years without a lot of support or interest.

LilaBard · 12/06/2017 12:28

Oh god toooldforthisshirt the DUP spew so much shite I had actually forgotten the BF comments.

OP even if you agree with all the DUPs terrible policies, the British government is supposed to remain neutral in Northern Ireland for the sake of helping mediate talks etc. Tell me how they can do that when they are beholden to one of the 2 main parties in order to get legislation passed in GB?
