To not get the hysteria over the DUP?

Cropping up on Facebook statuses today, photos with rainbows to stand against them.
I admit until last week I knew nothing about them. A quick look at their website does not show them to be homophobic, racist etc. And surely Teresa May has bigger worries than LGBT rights? They have 10 seats!
I'm not posting to be goady, I genuinely don't get it?

But so far May has U Turn on the early election, a key part of the Conservative Manifesto and this shows she and her cabinet cannot be trusted.

implantsandaDyson · 12/06/2017 12:48

Well it makes a bloody difference if you live in NI , or does that not matter? I drove past graffiti this morning " fuck your Irish language now" I have seen and heard various other crowing type sentiments over the weekend (I'm out and about in Belfast a lot). People are nervous, faith in the Good Friday Agreement is faltering, the word of the govt and particular James Brokenshire is worthless, I mean tbh he wasn't held in the greatest of esteem to begin with, but trust is well and truly fucked.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 12/06/2017 12:48

I haven't seen any hysteria, lots of anger, outrage and fear but no hysteria.

Frankly, I'm equally outraged, angry and fearful that anyone would be willing to sell the equality of any minority group down the river for, well anything really. The first priority of any UK PM should be to safeguard the civil rights of everyone, equally.

roselondoner · 12/06/2017 12:49

The hysteria surrounding them is totally rational given that they are terrorists who threaten a lot of the proud progressive movements within our country. They wield status and power because May needs them to form a government so I just worry about what they will demand in return.

Also - hysteria in my circle of friends/social circles is also down to how fucking ironic it is that everyone blasted JC for being a terrorist sympathiser (which is total bollocks) and then she forms an alliance that breaks the bloody Good Friday Agreement!!!!

dingit · 12/06/2017 12:50

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone in Ni. Let's just hope it all dies down over there, especially once there's a new general election.

OP posts:
harderandharder2breathe · 12/06/2017 12:52

The BBC did a brief, non-hysterical snapshot of each of the DUP MPs, that's a good place to start educating yourself

The leader of the Scottish conservatives was quick to voice her concern about the DUP's homophobia.

YABU, educate yourself before accusing people of hysteria for not wanting basic rights eroded in conscession to a backward minority party

TheFirstMrsDV · 12/06/2017 12:52

What do you mean I rest my case?
What case and why are you resting it?

I expect we will get a lot of these type of threads for a while.
Remember all the ones from UKIPpers pretending to be wide eyed housewives who couldn't understand what all the fuss was about?

Then there were the BNP ones

God but its tedious.

Phoeberdoos · 12/06/2017 12:54

Hi OP, Northern Irish lesbian here. Glad to know than neither the people of Northern Ireland nor LGBT people matter much. Hmm

You do realise that the NI Assembly was on the brink of collapse before this election don't you? Theresa May has potentially fucked the people of Northern Ireland by getting into bed with the DUP.

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:54

I am a NI Protestant who lives in a rural DUP stronghold area, I voted Alliance and very nearly voted Sinn Fein that's how oppressive the DUP are. I normally don't vote but recent years the DUP stranglehold scares the hell out of me and I fear for my dds growing up under this

Why the hell do you "usually not vote"?

As I understand, some voting systems mean your vote won't have much of an effect when you live in an area most people vote for one specific party, but even then, lowering the percentage with which a horrible party wins is important, shows the world not everyone agrees with them.

Syc4moreTrees · 12/06/2017 12:54

To be fair, although I am pro choice, it is not just the DUP that object to legalised abortion, many Northern Irish/Irish Catholics in NI also object to legalising abortion even if they don't vote for the DUP.

It's not as straightforward as people imagine. But I agree with OP, there really is no need for hysteria in the face of it all, the DUP have always had seats, and have always shored up the conservatives, I think they've just become more visible in the last week, when previously there were very few people in England Wales and Scotland who gave two tosses about NI political parties.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 12/06/2017 12:55

Thanks to those who answered my question. I am, sadly, a bit clueless about NI. Trying to change that.

Gerry Adams just made it very clear on BBC that any deals made with the DUP could potentially cause serious issues with the peace process.
That's pretty damn serious.

Did the Tories not actually think about that before proposing the alliance?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/06/2017 12:58

Are you operating the keyboard with your dragging knuckles op?

I can't think of another explanation for the rubbish you're continuing to post that wouldn't get me deleted for breaking Talk Guidelines.

VestalVirgin · 12/06/2017 12:58

You have some very weird views there. Hmm

Radishal · 12/06/2017 12:58

Gerry Adams is a fucking twat. But here he has a point.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/06/2017 12:59

Is "my cousin is a lesbian" the new "one of my best friends is black"?

Just updating the lexicon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/06/2017 13:00

It was a pretty grave warning really, even though given with a smile on his lips.
The Tories cannot possibly claim to be impartial when doing deals with one side.

RhythmStix · 12/06/2017 13:00

Read up about the Orange Order and their links witht he DUP.

God but its tedious

I know, people having different political opinion. Awful isn't it? Roll on the revolution and we can stop all that nonsense once and for all.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/06/2017 13:02

And you have added to that "not niceness" with your blatant disregard for the very serious issues facing women and homosexuals in NI - so the irony continues.

greedygorb · 12/06/2017 13:03

I'm from NI but have livesd in the mainland for 20 odd years.A lot of people vote for the DUP becuase they have become the main Unionist party over the last 20 years and they don't want to split the Unionist vote and let SF in. So they vote for them on one issue - to remain in the UK and ignoring their ultra Christian right wing agenda. And those voters should be fucking ashamed of themselves - they've sent NI back into the dark ages. I don't recognise the place now. I'm glad people are actually taken notice of what is happening there. It's a disgrace.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 12/06/2017 13:03

By "nice" you mean "submissive" or "compliant" or perhaps "incable of critical thinking"?

No, not a "nice" place then. Thank fuck.
