With only 39%ish of the vote how can Sturgeon claim to have a mandate for indyref2 now.

Please no more elections!

I think the rise in the Tory vote is intriguing. I think there is an surge in the fishing/farming communities but we'll see how that plays out during and post Brexit. This may turn out to be short lived support if the Tories shaft them which I think is quite likely.

There is also the anti independence voters which is to be expected as this is still a sizeable group. But in some areas a sectarian element lurks underneath this support. It will be interesting to see what happens with this is the Tories go in to coalition with the DUP, this could stir up all sort of problems.

I think Scottish Labour should take a substantial amount of blame for Tory success, the did not back Corbyn as the should have and were more interested if getting rid of SNP by any means. But in saying that the did recover some support inspite of this and there are plenty of independence supporters who don't support the SNP.

MycatsaPirate · 09/06/2017 14:12

I lived in Glasgow for 23 years (I'm English) and only moved back down south 5 years ago.

To say I'm stunned at the Tory's getting so many seats in Scotland is an understatement.

I thought the idea was that Scotland always had more pandas than Tory MP's? WTF happened Scotland?

Willyoujustbequiet · 09/06/2017 14:13

I'm over the moon. I hate the SNP with a passion. The Tory success is a great pity but it kicks Indyref 2 into the long grass which is the main thing.

trixymalixy · 09/06/2017 16:17

I'm delighted!! I said I would be cracking open the champagne if Salmond lost his seat and that will be happening when I reach my destination in about half an hour.

The SNP totally underestimated the strength of feeling that there should not be another indyref and are paying the price.

MacarenaFerreiro · 09/06/2017 16:37

Whoop whoop!! Break open the champers!!

Delighted here too - especially that Salmond got the boot. Yes the alternative is the Conservatives but they aren't forever as Independence would be. Think "Peak Nat" has been and gone, thank goodness.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 09/06/2017 16:41

I'm ecstatic the SNP lost seats. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of them and their ridiculous politics.

MidnightAura · 09/06/2017 17:09

I am happy they lost seats.
I did smile when I woke up to the news that Alex Salmond has lost his seat particularly after his comments about how the tories were arrogant to think they would get it.

There is a lot of upset Snp supporters on my Facebook and already the comment she of "You aren't a true Scot if you voted conservative and you should be ashamed"

The sad fact is had the snp wised up and stopped yapping about
Independence (think back to march when Sturgeon decided we were having another one and called a press conference to announce it) people wouldn't have voted conservative or labour in protest.

They have no one to blame but themselves.

Just had a quick look at this DUP. Fuck. Time to stop flapping about the snp, there'll be women with bigger problems now. Can you imagine how a single parent on benefits will fare under that coalition? Sad

lizzyj4 · 09/06/2017 17:37

I'm ecstatic abut the result. Holyrood was seriously missing some balance and opposition to the SNP. All that power had gone to their head.

Maybe this will encourage them to focus on trifling things like education, running the country, etc.

I'd like to think they might also start listening to people but the SNP interviews I've seen today suggest not.

Lochan · 09/06/2017 17:54

I understand that lots of people voted to protest a second Indyref, but using that vote for the Conservatives is beyond me.

Are people's memories really that short? Doesn't anyone remember the 1980s?

In the end you reap what you sow.

Tactical or not, lots of those protest voters will now have to put up with a Tory MP and we'll all have to suffer under another Tory government, made even worse than the last one by the addition of the DUP.

That anyone can find cause for celebration in that is beyond me.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 09/06/2017 18:10

This absolutely sums up how I'm feeling today. Everyone crowing about the SNP (who are still the majority party in Scotland btw, just in case anyone missed it) have yet to realise that in order to get rid of a party they hate, they've allowed a far, far worse party to gain power. I feel sick.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 18:19

Lots of scare mongering. The DUP's price will be protected funding for NO to replace EU money and nothing that bolsters a case for a united Ireland.

I doubt they Have the slightest interest in mainland domestic and social policy.

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 18:22

Yep me to Saor, especially when you read how anti women and homophobic they are.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 09/06/2017 18:25

The DUP are terrifying, their views on gay marriage (or just being gay at all), women's right to bodily autonomy, one of their MPs even publicly agreed with someone who said they "need to get the ethnics out"!!!
Even the most hardened nationalist looks like a pussycat compared to this mob of barely concealed misogynistic, homophobic orange men!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 18:34

They are not in any position to affect UK mainland social policy. Their price will be economic benefits for NI.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 09/06/2017 18:37

So as long as they don't affect you directly you are happy to have such absolute scumbags as part of a formal/informal coalition?

Lochan · 09/06/2017 18:39

They will be in a position to affect UK policy. The Tories will need them to pass any legislation.

Buttercup12233 · 09/06/2017 18:40

YANBU. Perhaps the SNP will actually listen to the people they represent rather than pushing their own agenda.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/06/2017 18:46

Perhaps the SNP will actually listen to the people they represent rather than pushing their own agenda

WTF?! The SNPs USP is a desire for independence Confused

I'm sure 6 years of Tory/DUP rule plus a disastrous Brexit will.do wonders for the indy vote though

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 18:52

So as long as they don't affect you directly you are happy to have such absolute scumbags as part of a formal/informal coalition?

Why don't you start a thread on Craicnet and rant at any Northern Ireland members who voted in a way you don't approve of?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 18:54

They will be in a position to affect UK policy. The Tories will need them to pass any legislation

Do you seriously think the DUP will be able to insist on reversing gay marriage or making abortion illegal on the mainland?

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 09/06/2017 18:56

Why don't you stop obsessively banging on about how much you don't give a shiny shite what happens in the UK as long as the SNP don't get votes. It's all you ever seem to talk about. The irrational fear of the SNP and protest votes have had catastrophic consequences for the whole of the UK, and yet the SNP are still the 3rd largest party in terms of seats in Westminster.

ssd · 09/06/2017 18:59

I'm amazed too at anyone in Scotland voting just to reduce the amount of SNP seats and to hell with who they vote for, hence the tories gain here.

I voted SNP before and this time I voted labour for the country, as I believe labour are best for Britain as a whole, which we are since we lost the indyref.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 09/06/2017 19:00

Fucking delighted. Salmond losing his seat was the icing on the cake.
