With only 39%ish of the vote how can Sturgeon claim to have a mandate for indyref2 now.

Please no more elections!

I voted labour as they were the only party with a chance of toppling the SNP majority in my constituency- we stayed SNP but by a bawhair, not the landslide of 2015.

I hope it's a bit of a wake up call to Sturgeon et al, but I suspect sadly not!

lucydogz · 09/06/2017 10:02

YANBU, it's the only good thing about the results

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 10:19

Do people seriously think Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP will just drop independence? They exist to get this. Ironically if and when it happens it's then they might not exist!

hellobonjour · 09/06/2017 10:21

laguna not getting you left Indy ref2 are you though? Grin

You lost 21 seats. You might still be the majority but it's an unmitigated disaster for the smug SNP.

Goodbye Alex Salmond, don't let that door hit you on the way out.

hellobonjour · 09/06/2017 10:21

Your*...don't know where the left came from!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 10:27

I don't get it either. Why not vote Labour if you don't want to vote SNP? Conservatives are worse than SNP imo!

In your opini opinion. I'd vote anything from Communist to Tory if it kept the SNP out.

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 10:33

Hello no idea why you need to put the grin, Indy ref 2 will happen when the time is right. So "Not getting" it just now (which was never on the cards anyway!) suits me just fine thanks.

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 10:35

And winning an election and having the most seats isn't my definition of a "unmitigated disaster".

florafoxtrot · 09/06/2017 10:36

A vote for the SNP yesterday was not a vote for independence. It was a vote for keeping the Tories out - same as a vote for Labour, Lib Dem or Greens would have been.

We've been hugely protected from austerity by virtue of the devolution of many areas of social policy but that won't happen forever, the Tories will cut funding for education, healthcare and the disadvantaged and only then will we stand up and take notice of the country that the SNP have been desperately trying to create for us.

I also hope that they now shift their focus from Indyref 2 - despite being in favour of it - and look to recoup and refocus into supporting Scottish communities because hell knows - we will need it in a hard Brexit.

WheresLarry · 09/06/2017 10:42

My thought is people were voting against Indyref2. If SNP ditch any attempt to hold another independence referendum then I think they will win back a lot of voters. Saying that, Ruth Davidson does come across very well and may start to make some inroads.

It was unrealistic to think they would be able to hold on to all 56 seats.

Belindabelle · 09/06/2017 10:43

But it hasn't kept the SNP out. It has cemented a Conservative victory. Great, potentially another 5 years of cuts and austerity.

florafoxtrot · 09/06/2017 10:54

Exactly Belindabelle

Sanoffyhighstepson · 09/06/2017 10:55

A sympathetic thread about poverty is still running, and we're on this one crowing about getting rid of the party who blocks austerity. I'm confused? Bedroom tax, prescription charges, free unlimited travel for pensioners, free university, free social care, and baby boxes are bad now??? Weren't we all lamenting children born into poverty and the hopelessness etc? I don't get it.

Braeburns · 09/06/2017 10:57

I agree with Sunshine and am appalled that people voted for the rape clause etc. Thankfully my constituency remained SNP but my fil just told us he voted tory (and presumably

Braeburns · 09/06/2017 10:59

Oops! Presumably mil too based on fatming/fishing etc. Their constituency was a Tory win 😢

florafoxtrot · 09/06/2017 11:04

Braeburns - I'm from a farming background and see a lot of Tory voting. Don't get it.

hellobonjour · 09/06/2017 11:06

laguna

Nicola is that you?

Belindabelle · 09/06/2017 11:07

If you support the Conservative policies then fine, you should vote for them. But voting for them because you don't want another referendum (in which you can vote NO) is moronic and bloody dangerous. Your vote is valuable, it counts. Don't be so cavalier with it.

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 11:19

Nope Hello.....is it so hard for you to understand ordinary working Scottish people would vote for the SNP? Im a Psychiatric Nurse working in the NHS. Thankfully psychiatric services whilst not perfect aren't in the mess a lot of them down south are in.

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 11:20

And a DUP coalition sound's just wonderful. Hmm

hellobonjour · 09/06/2017 11:28

Yes it is. They underspent on their NHS budget, Scottish schools have seen an appalling drop in numeracy under the SNP and they're hell bent on tearing the UK apart even though we voted 3 years ago and said no.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 09/06/2017 12:21

I'm just hoping she stands down as leader.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 09/06/2017 12:24

DUP in power and loads of Tories in scotland.

But hey at least we wont have a possible referendum after the terms of Brexit are agreed Hmm (not SNP voter)

foxyknoxy30 · 09/06/2017 12:28

When I saw that Salmond and Robertson had both lost their seats I could have wept with joy. Good riddance!!!

iveburntthetoast · 09/06/2017 12:50

The SNP losses are the only good thing about this election. The SNP have destroyed our education system from primary schools to universities. I'm not happy that the Tories have gained seats, but my biggest concern is/was indyfef2. No doubt the SNP will continue to pursue this at the expense of actually governing, but it makes it much harder for them to claim that 'the people' want it.
