With only 39%ish of the vote how can Sturgeon claim to have a mandate for indyref2 now.

Please no more elections!

Dinosaur that's what my DH was saying, at least 5 years.

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 09/06/2017 09:13

I'm not an SNP voter but am shocked at some of the communities voting Tory - South Ayrshire for example (old mining commmunity). For me it shows how out of touch Labour are with what should be their grass roots supporters. If Ruth was Labour, they'd probably have cleaned up.

ByGaslight · 09/06/2017 09:15

In the run-up, colleagues at work and friends all discussing how to vote tactically anti-SNP. My constituency went back to its historic Labour majority even though Kezia D isn't exactly a star. Spoken to lots of people who although not historic Tories not only would vote for them tactically but really rate Ruth D.

IMO SNP have long over-estimated the appetite for actual independence. Many people I suspect have voted for them a) to be disruptive of the old consensus b) new bulk support has come from people hoping for a lefter-wing regime, now fulfilled by Labour and c) to get more local representation. Being hacked off with continual Tory Westminster regimes is not the same as being actually opressed (Alex S comparing the 2014 Indyref voters to the first black votes in Soweto in S Africa FFS).

One of their many problems in government is obsession with Indyrefs above actually governing and a split support on Indyref anyway: a significant number of old-skool Nats (pre-trendy urbanite surge) in no way want the EU as a new 'state'.

I hope they're back to the fringe in the next go-round.

mayoli · 09/06/2017 09:16

I voted for SNP because I felt I had no other choice but I completely agree. Just wish the seats had went to Lib Dems and Labour rather than Tories, who are much worse.

Piffpaffpoff · 09/06/2017 09:16

Scotland said no at the referendum. I think this vote is all the no voters using the only means they can to make themselves heard again.

I'd probably vote SNP if it were not for the Indy ref obsession. They really need to get back to the day job and make a better job of it and show all us no voters whose no vote is 'no, not yet' rather than 'never' , that they can govern successfully. Cos at the moment, they're not doing well on that. Education in particular is in ongoing decline, despite all the talk of attainment.

I like what John Swinney has said this morning.

QuiteLikely5 · 09/06/2017 09:18

I'm delighted too!!! Go Ruth!!!

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/06/2017 09:23

I voted SNP last time, no way this time because I don't want Indyref2, I could never vote Tory so Labour it was.
We kept our SNP here, but he lost votes to Tory, I'm ok with that result.
It's too soon for Indyref again, it feel like its constant up here, just give it a few years to settle.

kaytee87 · 09/06/2017 09:24

I agree piff if SNP focussed more on running the country rather than banging on about indyref2 a mere 3 years after the 'once in a generation' indyref took place then the tories wouldn't have gained all these seats in scotland.
I voted lib dem but can't say I'm unhappy about the results.

TVHubbyClaire · 09/06/2017 09:25

I'm very pleased, I want my Scottish politicians to work for Scotland on day to day things that matter to people's lives.............

19lottie82 · 09/06/2017 09:26

Me too. Thankful voters in scotland are starting to see the light where the SNP are concerned. Originally thought it might take a generation to get them out but it's looking like it will be a lot sooner than that.

eelbecomingforyou · 09/06/2017 09:28

And hopefully the SNP will get back to the day job!

Unfortunately the day job is banging on about independence to the exclusion of anything else.

I quite agree. Hopefully this will have shown Sturgeon that the Scottish people do not share her views on indyref2.

I hope she will start to deal with some of Scotland's problems instead of banging on and on about independence. But I'm not holding my breath!!

WinnieFosterTether · 09/06/2017 09:30

The problem with seeing it as a 'vote against the SNP' is that you're ignoring who you voted for.
I don't understand how anyone can be delighted that the Tories took more seats in Scotland - or anywhere for that matter. Cuts to public services; less social housing; lower police numbers and a decimated NHS - not to mention the rape clause; the bedroom tax - that's the party you'd rather give votes to so you don't have to vote in another referendum?
imo it looks like people voting selfishly to disadvantage women (who have been most affected by Tory cuts) the elderly, the vulnerable and the disabled but trying to wrap it up as though it was about a principle.
Thankfully the rest of the UK wasn't as short-sighted when it came to voting for the Tories.

Sunshinegirls · 09/06/2017 09:32

Winnie. Exactly

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 09/06/2017 09:35

Yep, put a huge smile on my face.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 09/06/2017 09:37

What winnie said. Labour voter here

amusedbush · 09/06/2017 09:40

What is baffling is why the result of indyref 1 apparently doesn't count.

Because the political landscape of this country has changed vastly since Scotland (not me, I'll admit) voted No. Many people wanted to stay in the UK, and in the EU. That is not what has happened.

I think it's entirely fair to ask "do you still want to stay in the UK"?

Dandandandandandandan · 09/06/2017 09:41

Salmond and ukip were two of the few bright spots in a long shitty night

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 09/06/2017 09:41

In the run-up, colleagues at work and friends all discussing how to vote tactically anti-SNP.

Same here.

As for The problem with seeing it as a 'vote against the SNP' is that you're ignoring who you voted for but the SNP is only for independence. Everything else is irrelevant to them. That is what I voted against.

FinallyThroughTheRoof · 09/06/2017 09:44

Yes and for allowing Tories in

LordPercy · 09/06/2017 09:44

I'm delighted too. Just waiting to see what spin they put on it this time. Wish there had been more losses to make it a bit more emphatic. Watching all the bleating about "it was the other parties going on about independence, not us..." just now. Now, why would that be? 🤔

IWantACheeseburger · 09/06/2017 09:47

I don't get it either. Why not vote Labour if you don't want to vote SNP? Conservatives are worse than SNP imo!

EchidnasPhone · 09/06/2017 09:48

I voted Tory, Lib dem got in in my area. So much time is taken up discussing indyref at question time, all interviews & all political decisions in Scotland based on 'what if'. I am tired of voting & the distracting chatter that surrounds it. Time the snp & Sturgepm focussed on what they do have like a complete lack of teachers & a declining education system that whether Scotland is in or out of the EU is a major issue.

LordPercy · 09/06/2017 09:49

I did vote Labour for the first time in decades against the SNP and thankfully lots of others in my area did so we've swung back to Labour again 🎉. I must admit to head scratching re the Tory vote too.

madcapcat · 09/06/2017 09:56

I suspect a lot of it, particularly in the NE, is farmers and fishermen who were generally more supportive of the tories,

LagunaBubbles · 09/06/2017 09:59

And of course Nicola Sturgeon is still going to want an Independent Scotland, that's what the SNP stand for at the end of the day, it's not rocket science. And they still won the election.
