Because of his terrorist links. That's pretty strong stuff! In today's telegraph. Behind a paywall though but the first few paragraphs are visible.

There is no bar in her holding public office.

She chose to resign because of the public reaction, and I think it is unlikely she would be voted in again.

But that's because if public opinion, not an actual administrative bar. Elected posts do not require vetting, just winning.

OlennasWimple · 08/06/2017 15:39

Maria Gatland is a current Tory councillor (and Shadow Cabinet Member for Children, Families & Learning)

Sostenueto · 08/06/2017 16:17

Well turnout good in my neck of the woods. Friend just rang to say they were busy this morning. That could be because area is Tory ground and lots of retired people or it could be the opposite. Who knows and in my case who cares being as my one vote isn't going to do much to a Tory county. But it is one vote they won't get I suppose ( dreading result in morning, and my heart is in my feet along with my bottom lip). I can see that I could be seeing the decimation of the labour party and with it any semblance if democracy for a number of years. Doubt I will be on this earth for next election.Sad

hackmum · 08/06/2017 16:29

You know what? I don't think Jeremy Corbyn is perfect. I have my reservations about him. But Theresa May is a woman who, while Home Secretary, stopped UK funding for the European search and rescue operation that was rescuing refugees from the Mediterranean. How morally bankrupt do you have to be to do that? How is it in any way defensible?

And this is a woman who is now selling arms to the country that is funding terrorists and, by setting up madrasas in the Islamic world, spreading the most pernicious version of Islam, Wahhabism, which is followed by the terrorists. Pupils who study at these madrasas grow up to become the members of ISIS who attack Western countries. How can anyone believe that she is against terrorists when she is actually supporting them? She is helping the UK's enemies. How anyone can vote for this evil woman is utterly beyond me.

Farahilda · 08/06/2017 16:33

She resigned in Croydon when it all first came out.

I thought I'd deleted the 'unlikely' bit before posting.

Main point I meant : you don't have to be vetted, but you do have to win : I think still stands.

Atenco · 08/06/2017 16:49

hackmum

Well said, though I don't think that the ISIS fighters ever went to even Wahabi madrazas, they seem generally to be just petty theives with an amazing ignorance of Islam.

mindmyarse · 08/06/2017 16:58

Exactly OP your source is THE telegraph that is laughable Wow you believe everything you read and then start trying to discredit Corbyn get real

Sostenueto · 08/06/2017 17:00

Don't forget we send foreign aide to North Korea. May didn't even know we do!

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2017 17:02

Not sure we do, actually. Isn't it some sort of educational exchange programme ..?

Sostenueto · 08/06/2017 17:07

Don't think so Bert, but the real point is May on question time leader special knew absolutely nothing about it and was taken aback by it. As PM surely should have a good idea where our foreign aide is going to?

Sostenueto · 08/06/2017 17:10

Think its a few thousand we send Bert. We shouldn't be sending any there surely? Especially as they may very well start world war 3? More surface missiles launched yesterday I believe by them.

Sittinonthefloor · 08/06/2017 17:27

Mind - you do realise that the telegraph is a main stream newspaper, Tory yes, but hardly beyond the pale, its opinion pieces have a slant, a side they want to promote but that doesn't mean they can't raise valid points. I've repeatedly said that I'm not particularly keen on may, and that we all know the telegraph is a Tory paper. That doesn't mean we can't debate the problem of Corbyn's unfitness for office. And debate doesn't just mean shouting 'yeah but no but, you're all stupid' it means you telling us why you think Corbyn is capable of running the country.

OP posts:
mindmyarse · 08/06/2017 17:33

Did I say I supported Corbyn I question why you believe what you read are you so gullible

MsMartini · 08/06/2017 17:36

Oleanna I totally agree. It is the rewriting history and obfuscation that get me.

mindmyarse · 08/06/2017 17:38

Your title of your post is not offering a debate it's copying a news item it's scaremongering not a What do you think ? Statement

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2017 17:40

"That doesn't mean we can't debate the problem of Corbyn's unfitness for office"
I am happy to debate this. I just don't think the article you link to has anything to do with his fitness for office or otherwise.

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2017 17:41

And you saying "That's pretty strong stuff!" suggests that you are taking it seriously.....

Sittinonthefloor · 08/06/2017 17:43

What's not to believe - I do believe that JC would be unlikely to get clearance to work for mi6. Do you think he would?

This then raised the question as to whether his views on terrorism make him a suitable candidate for pm. I don't think they do.

Labour supporters have been unable to answer this question, repeatedly either saying 'what about May' or dismissing it as worthy of debate.

OP posts:
mindmyarse · 08/06/2017 17:43

Check your facts before you quote me I did not say that In fact check your facts full stop

BertrandRussell · 08/06/2017 17:44

If I had to say why I have doubts about Corbyn's ability to be prime minister, they are around his ability to carry his party with him. I actually think that his opponents would have been better focussing on this than on the laughable "national security" issues.

mindmyarse · 08/06/2017 17:45

Sorry Bertrand got you muddled with OP apologies

Sittinonthefloor · 08/06/2017 17:45

strong stuff - as in it's unusual to say the least for an ex mi6 head to openly say that a candidate for pm is dangerous for the country! What he said about Corbyn was very strong!

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 08/06/2017 18:03

Bloke says some strong stuff to help support the political party he wants to win.

Meh.

Just says May has friends in High Places and Corbyn doesn't more than anything.

Some people might see that as a plus point.

TikkaToRide · 08/06/2017 18:07

So talking to terrorists is terrible whatever your motives but selling arms to the Saudis is a ok presumably? If we are to believe all the press stories that's the other side. I know which I'd rather support.

prettybird · 08/06/2017 18:07

Not read the full thread so this may already have been pointed out Presumably Mandela shouldn't have been "allowed" to be a leader of his country, given his terrorist links Hmm

Or Gandhi "allowed" to lead India to its independence given his subversive approach. Hmm

Or Major for having the temerity to begin discussions, even indirectly, with "terrorists" in order to bring about peace in NI?

Being suitable to be a spy is not the same as participating as a leader of a democratic party in a democratic election in a democracy.

To suggest otherwise has shades of "A Very British Coup" (if you are old enough to remember the series WinkBlush) - not a route I would want to go down Sad

And of course, even if he were to have passed security vetting, who is to say he wouldn't be a double agent? Grin Our security services have let them slip through the net in past! Wink
