to wonder why MN is so let wing

That's it really; MN seems to be overwhelmingly Labour leaning and that's not obviously indicative of the country as a whole, and I'm under the impression that MN covers a very wide social/ economic spectrum so you'd think it would be more representative of the electorate a s a whole
Rational non insulting reasons would be good

The level of debate (and I use this word in the loosest possible context) on this and the majority of political threads on MN is so poor as to be a joke.
I couldn't give a fuck how other people vote in a democratic election. That doesn't mean I'm not engaged in the process, I just can't be bothered to argue at this level. It achieves nothing.

OCSockOrphanage · 07/06/2017 16:40

Elderly or dim folk, Demesne? How patronising can one get?

Some elderly folk have degrees. Many are excited by the Internet. Others remember the days before there was an NHS.

And, dare one whisper it, there are some dim young people around as well.

MiraiDevant · 07/06/2017 16:40

I agree Queene and as I said it is a pity.

There a couple of very knowledgeable posters on here from whom I have learnt a lot and it certainly has influenced my voting and some of my purchasing decisions.

sexymuthafunker · 07/06/2017 16:43

Well I suppose if you have children OP then it's fairly likely that you might care about the education system being properly funded. I guess if you gave birth in a hospital you might also feel it important to look after our wonderful
NHS and not like the idea of it being sold off to TMs mates. You might also not like the idea of having your children's inheritance being taken from them.... I could go on Hmm

Flumpernickel · 07/06/2017 16:48

"NHS and not like the idea of it being sold off to TMs mates. "

Do have a link to this in the tory manifesto please?

Flumpernickel · 07/06/2017 16:50

Can you also show me the post where OP, claimed to be an education hating, fan of privatisation and the unfair removal of inheritance?

MiraiDevant · 07/06/2017 16:52

And if you are elderly you also care very much about the NHS. Often elderly people are simply our mothers and grandmothers - that's all.

Much of the mudslinging is about image - we want to see ourselves as something or other and it is important for us to look right in the eyes of our social circle.

StHeathensGrammar · 07/06/2017 16:52

sexy You might also not like the idea of having your children's inheritance being taken from them

That's been a weird one. Surely passing wealth down through the generations is more of a right-wing thing, in general? Why should some children start with much more money behnind them? (I understand where there is disability parents want to ensure their child has an ok future, but I'd rather it was for all, not just those with well-off parents.)

ChinaRose · 07/06/2017 16:54

We live in a leafy area of what is usually a very safe labour seat. Only one Labour sign up this year though and it happens to be the house of the mother of our local labour candidate! (Along with the brand new range rover and horse trailer, what a surprise). Funnily enough though the candidate lives approximately 16 miles away in a very nice Cheshire town and not the dump he is campaigning for. This has become so typical of labour. I don't know any true working class people who are interested in JC. As for mumsnet it's incredibly middle class hence the champagne socialists on here (do as I say, not as I do).

TheMonkeyAndThePlywoodViolin · 07/06/2017 16:57

What a load of nonsense

samG76 · 07/06/2017 16:57

Mirai - are you being deliberately difficult. The earrings weren't added as a fashion statement, but as an insinuation that the PM is somehow in the pay of the Jews.

In the same way, I know some people who wear borsalino hats and have sidecurls. Nothing wrong with that. But if someone drew a poster showing a Jewish or non-Jewish politician with a black hat, long beard sidecurls, I think it would be pretty clear what the intended meaning was....

MiraiDevant · 07/06/2017 17:01

StHeathensGrammar

  • I would say it is pretty universal to want to pass on everything we can to our children. Ideas, learning, education, money, a business, a Council House, a Faith..... It is almost part of the point of having children.

Children have different strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages. There are some people who would want to stop others passing on money and that is considered a left wing position.

MiraiDevant · 07/06/2017 17:03

Not being difficult - clearly just misunderstood the point that was being made and hadn't seen the picture. Sorry.

sleepyowl12 · 07/06/2017 17:08

@Jng, not all economists agree with Labour's economic plan but equally there are many respected economists who think it's a credible alternative. Many economists signed this letter in support of Corbyn's economic plan. www.theguardian.com/news/2017/jun/03/the-big-issue-labour-manifesto-what-economy-needs

Also "Of 33 economists surveyed by the Centre for Macroeconomics two thirds disagreed with the proposition that the Government’s policies since 2010 have had a “positive effect” on the economy." www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/two-thirds-of-economists-say-coalition-austerity-harmed-the-economy-10149410.html

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2017 17:08

You know, on balance, I would rather be called elderly and dim than an anti-Semitic terrorist apologist. But, to use a well worn Mumsnet phrase, perhaps that's just me.....

sleepyowl12 · 07/06/2017 17:14

I never understand the criticism of people with good incomes who support left wing policies (derided as champagne socialists) that aim to distribute the benefits of a thriving economy more fairly. People can have money but believe in a society that does not have such a big gap between rich and poor. Some argue a fairer society actually benefits us all. UK is number 3 of European countries who have the largest gap between those on high and low incomes.

MiraiDevant · 07/06/2017 17:15

But no-one wants to be called anything because it is meaningless! I am sure Bertrand that you are none of those things, Smile

Middleoftheroad · 07/06/2017 17:20

My father is a staunch tory who came from a tough background. My champagne socialist cousin who lives is a completely leafy wealthy suburb and does not have to work is top.of JC fanclub. She takes great joy in winding him up and being quite vicious yet knows nothing of the real world. I try to broker. I think there are quite a few like her on MN.

strawberrygate · 07/06/2017 17:26

I dont understand why Tories are so bothered about being called cunts
because to some people it's a disgusting insulting word that they would rather not be referred as. Not hard to understand really.

OP posts:
OlennasWimple · 07/06/2017 17:26

It's possible to be right wing but believe in the NHS. It's possible to be left wing and support strong border controls. Politic beliefs are never clear cut, and I don't believe many people read a manifesto and agree with every single word of it and then read another party's and disagree with every single bit. All we can do is try to find the party which most closely supports our views and opinions about what is right to do at the current time.

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2017 17:27

"But no-one wants to be called anything because it is meaningless! I am sure Bertrand that you are none of those things"

I am not. But I have been called the last two today.

PeanutButterBunny · 07/06/2017 17:34

It seems like it, but it's probably because if you are not left wing on here, you're called selfish cunts, baby killers, senior citizens abusers, and all sort of beautiful names. While if you vote for Labour, you have moral conscience, you save the world by being oh so good with your shiny halo.

ChinaRose · 07/06/2017 17:38

Because you cannot relate to working class people that's why. Working class people don't want to live off the state for the rest of their lives. We don't want you money or sympathy. You say you care but you hide away in your leafy tory safe seats claiming to hate your tory neighbours and will never ever step foot here in your life. Labour do not represent the wc anymore don't kid yourself. I'd love to see the reaction if government announced a huge fucking council estate from up north was relocating to your lovely safe seat villages down south. They won't provide a school nor health provisions they never do. They just build build build. "Not in my backyard" I bet you're thinking.

OCSockOrphanage · 07/06/2017 17:39

The nice word for the left wing is Utopian.

Ontopofthesunset · 07/06/2017 17:57

No, Utopian is a misrepresentation by someone who doesn't understand the left-wing. Some people to the right of centre like to think they are pragmatic and realistic whereas those to the left of centre are pie-eyed idealists. But of course social democracy is practised in many countries with better standards of living than ours.
