To think people who would otherwise vote for corbyn may not because of Diane Abbott?

Sorry if there's already a thread about her latest cringeworthy interview but I couldn't find one... here she was on sky new last night, clearly having failed to read the police report she was there to discuss:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.thesun.co.uk/news/3731086/shadow-home-secretary-diane-abbott-car-crash-interview-sky-police-security-london-bridge-attacks-terror/amp/

I like corbyn and what he stands for, but I can't give him my vote with these buffoons around him!

I don't think much of Jeremy, and his policies will screw us, however, "it's very clear to me"(!) that more weak and wibbly May would be a disaster for the country. I couldn't possibly vote for the Conservatives.

DidyouseeEthel · 07/06/2017 10:37

Makeourfuture, you've reminded me of the arrogance of left wing campaigners of the past, like John Prescott. Not listening to anything anybody says unless they agree with you, not answering questions, repeating things endlessly. A blatant attempt at browbeating. The posters on this thread are too intelligent for that and you haven't noticed. You're not doing labour any favours tbh.

noblegiraffe · 07/06/2017 10:52

We didn't get a vote on proportional representation though, we got a vote on the alternative vote system, which is not proportional representation, just a different way of deciding the overall winner.

makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 10:59

Makeourfuture, you've reminded me of the arrogance of left wing campaigners of the past

With all due respect, I am more worried about:

  • The Tory removal of human rights
  • Our nation's insecurity
  • The resource-starved NHS, schools and police
  • The ideological attack on the disabled, sick, poor and elderly

And so, so much more.

Ontopofthesunset · 07/06/2017 10:59

The referendum on voting reform was set up to fail, I think, in that the option that was given to us was a very bad choice. There are various different types of voting system, including Single Transferable Vote, which are in my opinion better than what we have now. FPTP is massivly unrepresentative and leads to ridiculous levels of effective disenfranchisement. In my constituency, every vote for Labour is a wasted vote as it isn't represented anywhere and never will be.

Anyway, it's so reassuring that all the people on this thread who said they couldn't vote for the Labour Party because of Diane Abbott now can't vote for them because of Lyn Brown. So it turns out it wasn't really Diane Abbott at all. Quelle surprise!

NoLottery I live in the Netherlands and felt for many years believed that coalitions ended in indecisive governments but have completely changed view. Consensus is more important than ever. If people feel their votes count for something or they have something to vote FOR, they'll use them. If you want a true democracy, you need to know what people think even if their views (Geert Wilders) are repulsive but you have to acknowledge the reasons why people vote that way.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 11:23

Will you actually vote Citroen, in the Netherlands?

Same question for Make. I seem to recall your saying you are an US immigrant. Will you be voting?

Dandandandandandandan · 07/06/2017 11:26

Interesting reading about how much Ms Abbott has charged for appearances on the BBC, lecturing at BNP Paribas and women's business events. £110,000 for the BBC; thousands of pounds for the others.

She's as bad as Blair.

How can you say you stand for the ordinary working person, and yet make a fortune from it? It sticks right in the throat. Along with all her other hypocrisies!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 11:27

Private schools are expensive.

citroenpresse · 07/06/2017 11:39

Not I will be voting but this will be my last vote ever in the UK elections (been in NL for almost 15 years). Last also for my husband, and the first and last vote for my son who just turned 18 but was born in the UK and registered at the house (we still own) in Hackney. Yes, DA territory. No taxation without representation, haha. Am not entitled to vote in Dutch elections (not a Dutch citizen) and when GB exits the EU, will no longer be able to vote in European elections. Will not have a vote anywhere. There are 3 million Brits in this situation.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 12:04

15 years is long time.

It seems you wont be affected by the very issues you are so fervently campaigning about on here.

NoLotteryWinYet · 07/06/2017 12:06

yes citroen it's clear that we need more consensus politics here, I agree. The last few years have been very divisive and I don't see it getting better in the current system.

citroenpresse · 07/06/2017 12:27

Not We still have very close ties to the UK . My mother died last month - have first hand experience of talking to those who provided care for her in her final weeks how punishing the cuts are. My husband's parents are now going through this.

Extraordinary that you could say Britons in Europe will not be affected. We are about to lose all our rights.

MargotMoon · 07/06/2017 12:30

What excuses will people be making now that she has 'stepped aside' then? Wink

Believeitornot · 07/06/2017 12:40

Yvette cooper should do her role

citroenpresse · 07/06/2017 12:47

Chardonnay 3 terror attacks, information leaks all over the place, no grip at all, and May was in the Home Office for 7 years. No grip on what is going on. Pretty much every agency is saying this is a resources not powers issue and she has cut 20,000 police as well as making destructive cuts everywhere else. Trump will be lapping this up. If the UK, for so long the makers of just laws, can abandon human rights, so will he. But of course, Brexit is what will most affect me personally and for that alone, I'm voting Labour.

Sostenueto · 07/06/2017 12:52

Where's the Tory Chancellor on holiday? Shouldn't he have made statements about the economy at some point during the election? Oh what's to bet no one questions Hus disappearance then!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 12:54

Are Labour anti-Brexit?

Dandandandandandandan · 07/06/2017 12:55

I can see why someone who stands to be v affected by Brexit would vote for corbyn...!

histinyhandsarefrozen · 07/06/2017 13:01

I don't think Labour is anti-Brexit. Indeed, Corbyn's weak remain campaign was reprehensible.

However, the Conservatives under May have thrown themselves behind hard-Brexit, plus it was their internal issues and their poorly worded referendum which has taken us down this destructive path.

I think we will see that remainers will tend to vote Left in this election while Brexitters will tend to vote Tory. I won't vote to "strengthen's May's hands in the negotiations" - I think her approach - or rather non-plan' is absolute bullshit.

makeourfuture · 07/06/2017 13:07

Are Labour anti-Brexit?

They are certainly anti-NO PLAN Brexit.

The Tories , on-the-other-hand....NO PLAN AT ALL.

Nothing.

Not a scrap.

Nothing strong or stable about that.

OCSockOrphanage · 07/06/2017 13:08

Philip Hammond was on Today (R4) yesterday morning, for 20 minutes, sos.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 13:09

Will you be voting Make?

Yay did say you are from the US?

citroenpresse · 07/06/2017 13:09

Labour's performance over Brexit was crap and a lot of that was down to Corbyn. But Labour POLICY is a different matter. The outside view (certainly from NL) is that the UK is in meltdown - sad, but what can you do with such a ridiculous voting system. Oh well, this is what you owe the EU, bye.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/06/2017 13:10

You not yay.

Though must say I was surprised to get and answer, well, sort of an answer with a lecture attached.
