For body shaming JC, that is just beyond vile and nasty. Glad it's looking like they will not win.

She is over.

I am astounded that Theresa May did not take part tonight and that Amber Rudd had to stand in. Very poor judgement and I think it will backfire on TM personally and the Tories in general.

DancingLedge · 31/05/2017 22:54

Strong and stable my arse

Too frit to even turn up

No kind of leader at all

U turner, opportunist, knows she won't be elected if she debates face to face

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/06/2017 06:45

Also bear in mind her dad died a couple of days ago.

We know, and I think it's disgraceful that TM sent her in her place knowing this. Whether Rudd wanted to do it or not, May should have insisted on replacing her with someone else, or actually bothering to turn up herself instead of using that ridiculous campaigning excuse, does she think the other parties have just been sat on their backsides just waiting for the television debate?

If she can't / won't turn up for a television debate, I hope she actually bothers to turn up for other important stuff, like the Brexit negotiations for example.

MaisyPops · 01/06/2017 07:17

It's tragic amber rudd's dad died.

Is it awful that the cynic in me thinks that Theresa May probably pushed her into continuing because it means people will explain away a poor performance using the bereavement? And that people will be talking about how awful it is for amber rudd rather than the election policies?

Anyone with a heart would have instructed her to stand down and put someone else, or Theresa May could have done it.

BertrandRussell · 01/06/2017 07:43

There isn't a decent manager in the world who would let someone do a major presentation two days after a bereavement.the world. Apart from the compassionate angle, it's just too risky. Unless... but no, not even May would be that cynical.

StrapOnSallly · 01/06/2017 07:47

Bertrand are you saying that TM is going for the sympathy vote or is deliberately trying to chuck away the election?

MaisyPops · 01/06/2017 08:04

It makes me wonder strap.
Not throw the election, but it's a useful diversion from people talking about policies.

When I've suffered bereavement my managers have insisted I could be at home with family, I wanted to be in and busy but they told me to ease off, advised I went home as soon as it felt too much. Gave me time off when I was ready to accept that was what I needed.

If it's an election move, it's bad and appalling.
And just on a personal level I don't think it shows any humanity.

Peregrina · 01/06/2017 08:06

You say 'a decent manager' Bertrand. May has just shown that she doesn't fit into that category.

I have sympathy on a personal level for Amber Rudd, losing a parent. However, I do assume she knows the word 'no', and could have said, 'not at this time'? Why did May not put forward one of the three stooges? Better still, although he seems out of favour, Hammond would probably have done a good job.

BertrandRussell · 01/06/2017 08:09

Sympathy vote. Imagine if she had shed a tear or two over social care......

makeourfuture · 01/06/2017 08:13

Where is May?

noblegiraffe · 01/06/2017 08:16

Maybe Rudd didn't get on with her dad and isn't actually that bothered?

I think we should assume that she is capable of making a decision about her appearance and given that she didn't look on the edge or break down during the show, she was actually correct about her ability to cope.

Giddyaunt18 · 01/06/2017 08:18

Wow, poor Amber Rudd. This is not helping to improve my opinion of TM right now.

VanillaSugar · 01/06/2017 08:21

Just googled Amber Rudd and her father was 93. They had a family meal on Tuesday to celebrate his life, she says that he would have wanted her to carry on, so she did.

She was also married to AA Gill who is the father of her two children. He recently died.

Whatever your views, she is a strong woman. Good for her (for being strong, not for her own political views).

WorldsacpeLove · 01/06/2017 08:28

@bertrandrussel

Ah you're back! Wonderful, perhaps now you could answer my question please?

  • so you don't think it's acceptable for Corbyn to commemorate people who have been killed by the SAS in a wreath-laying ceremony held at the grave of Salman Abedi then?

You said yesterday that it's OK for Jeremy Corbyn to have attended the ceremony because he says he was commemorating all of the people who died under Mossad - why does that make it OK? They supported terrorist activities.

It's exactly the same thing but in a present-day situation - yet, you have an issue with it?

How can you excuse his behaviour (and his version and reasoning for that behaviour) for what he's done in the past if you'd have an issue with him doing it in the present?

BertrandRussell · 01/06/2017 08:36

SAS - do you mean the Special Air Service? Or someone else?

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/06/2017 08:45

I think Amber did fine.

It was the equivalent of a no comment interview in the nick Grin. It will do her no harm on balance.
The others made some good points, but the squabbling!!!! it was far too clear an example of how a Labour coalition will never work.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/06/2017 08:47

but the squabbling!!!!

That got to me. I've seen better conducted 6th form debates.

The whole thing will probably put more people off voting than persuade them in any way.

rollonthesummer · 01/06/2017 08:47

A bit like question time or the House of Commons?

m.plymouthherald.co.uk/three-minutes-of-nothing-herald-reporter-reflects-on-pm-encounter/story-30363961-detail/story.html

It seems like Theresa is so scared of saying something 'wrong' that she literally isn't saying anything, just spouting sound bites and then buggering off. Pathetic. She called this election, the very least she could do is face the public. I'm not a huge Corbyn fan but fair play to him for turning up and I think he did reasonably well.

MaybeNextWeek · 01/06/2017 08:48

'or actually bothering to turn up herself instead of using that ridiculous campaigning excuse'

Good for her being out campaigning and talking to the public rather than taking part in that shambolic bickering session.

If she'd have been seen on a beach in the Caribbean the 'she couldn't be bothered' comments would have been relevant.

Also give Rudd come credit. She is a strong woman with her own mind not someone forced into a 'presentation' while grief stricken.

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/06/2017 08:53

roll hardly anyone watches those things.

This was a prime time mid election opportunity to show the electorate a possible way forward. An opportunity thrown away I think.

What it did show quite clearly is that the campiagn managers and leaders have little idea of how they will actually win votes. Far more interested in scoring small points.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/06/2017 08:57

Yes and that this format doesn't work.

Peregrina · 01/06/2017 08:59

Good for her being out campaigning and talking to the public rather than taking part in that shambolic bickering session.

She's hardly done any campaigning. As for talking to the public - when challenged by genuine members of the public, and not hand-picked Tories, she can only repeat robotic slogans. She called this election, remember? For all her visibility she might as well have been on a beach in the Caribbean.

Furthermore, she has set a bad example to the other Tory MPs. Most of them are avoiding going to hustings - they are 'too busy', or 'have other engagements'. Otherwise interpreted as having contempt for their electorate.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/06/2017 08:59

I'm not a huge Corbyn fan but fair play to him for turning up and I think he did reasonably well.

Yes he did turn up. He wasn't going to however. The decision was made yesterday afternoon.

If May had turned up they would have gone along the u turn route again. In this instance she couldn't have won.

GetAHaircutCarl · 01/06/2017 09:04

All TM had to do at the start of this campaign is STFU.

She managed to do that badly!

Presumably JC was advised to U turn at the last second. And TBF he wasn't given a hard time for it. But, the result was a very visual display of how a coalition will not work. And by turning up JC will have massively increased viewing figures. Probably would have been better in terms of winning actual votes if he hadn't.
