To feel the faint stirrings of hope of a Labour victory?

KentMum2008 · 29/05/2017 22:33

Just that really? We all thought it was a done deal, T May was going to win by a landslide and we'd be crippled by another 5 years of Tory rule.

Fast forward a few weeks and a Labour victory doesn't seem like such a long shot.

AIBU to feel optimistic that Labour genuinely have a fighting chance? At the very, very least it might result in no overall majority, but the ultimate dream of a Labour govt, run by a true socialist isn't as impossible as previously though.

Corbyn doesn't have a snowball's chance thank goodness.

annandale · 30/05/2017 06:53

My other, I read Christina as saying the opposite - she would stay with a labour government.

Loopytiles · 30/05/2017 06:57

I still think it will be a Tory landslide, sadly.

I am a labour voter not voting labour because of corbyn/momentum.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 06:59

The recent Labour surge in the polls means very little IMO.

^ this. Especially as it seems that the
figures that have him 6% behind rely on a 80-90% turnout between 18-24 year olds which isn't going to happen

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 07:02

That figure should be relying on a 82% turnout of that age group, it has now been confirmed.

No the Tories shall win comfortably maybe not as bigger win as they thought

That IRA issues isn't going to to away and will always be his downfall (along with his other dubious friends) and rightly so

IncidentalAnarchist · 30/05/2017 07:14

Do people like Lass not realise that the reason Corbyn is surrounded by idiots like Abbott is because most established shadow cabinet members chucked their toys out of the pram and resigned?! I'm sure if he had his choice he would have someone more credible!
The football/manager analogy from above sums it up. How can a Labour Party member enable a strong right wing government? Shame on you

Bluntness100 · 30/05/2017 07:18

I think his and diane abbots Ira affiliations will take more of the press in the next few days, as they need to, you can't have a sympathiser in downing streeet. I'm sure it goes deeper than even we know, so very likely they have stuff over him and her.

The way I read it is he has promised pink unicorns for everyone on someone else's dime, and its causing some folks to overlook the reality of him, mconnell and Abbott, their ability to run the country or manage brexit and actually deliver on those promises and they are being very vocal about it.

I don't think it will be as much of a Tory landslide as was originally predicted, but I do think the vast majority of the British public can see past the pink unicorns to the reality of them. 172 labour MPs stood up last June and let everyone know they didn't want corbyn and those people know.

KentMum2008 · 30/05/2017 07:32

What about the Tory party's IRA affiliations? What about the fact that there is an ex-IRA member serving as a Tory councillor in Croydon? Who hid her IRA past and lived under a different name, until it was 'accidentally' exposed and she had to come clean? That's ok, is it?

Jeremy Corbyn is not an IRA sympathiser, the Tories and right wing press will do anything they can to smear him and stop him becoming prime minister. The conservatives are the most hypocritical party that ever existed, and it's terrifying to think they will be allowed to continue and have carte blanche over the country.

Let's see what the figures say after last night's "debate"

I can't see them shifting much if at all.

Even the man that heavily questioned May on social care, afterwards said he will still be voting Tory.

I did think there was an interesting call in on lbc afterwards. Three callers who were in the audience called in separately after the debate. They were intending to vote in different ways.

All however said that May stopped and talked to the audience afterwards. Corbyn walked off. I guess we don't know what happens after the cameras stop rolling and the photos are no longer being taken.

One thing we can probably all agree on is that Paxman shouldn't do these anymore.

Zampa · 30/05/2017 07:34

Lass The country doesn't have to pay for renationalisation, it pays for itself as the money created is returned to the Exchequer. In terms of the railways, the Labour manifesto doesn't mention buying back franchisees, just not renewing them.

I'm confused about the terrorism/IRA line of attack against Corbyn. He's condemned their actions and pictures of him with Martin McGuinness are when MM was a Sinn Fein politician. The Royal Family and BoJo have all been pictured with MM and Bill Clinton did his funeral eulogy ... As for voting against anti-terrorism legislation, so did Theresa May and many of her Cabinet colleagues.

As for the original question, I don't think Labour have a cat's chance of winning this election. There is still too big a gap to close and polling is unreliable. However, since the election was called, I've gone from being a reluctant anti-Corbyn Labour voter, to realising that the current Labour manifesto is the first time in years that a party is representing my views.

Corbyn is a politician who has principles and isn't prepared to compromise them for political gain, leaning whichever way the wind blows, unlike TM. I'm still not a big fan but respect that.

It's interesting how many people say they don't want Corbyn because he is dogmatically idealistic / doesn't listen to others / only wants his own way.

And yet we clearly saw last night that that is not true when Paxman badgered him over having things in the party manifesto which go against his personal beliefs (trident). Paxman did him a lot of favours during that aggressive interview as instead of showing him to be someone who doesn't stick to things, he showed him to be willing to compromise, listen to his party and accepting that reality sometimes comes before ideals.

May was not great - although I thought she was better than her terrible performance with Andrew Neil.

I feel very concerned at the thought of her in charge of brexit negotiations. I fell for the "safe pair of hands" propaganda but having seen more of her during the campaign I think she is a liability and she will throw the common people under the bus and then triumphantly declare that a success. The only thing I agree with her on is how important the negotiations will be - I don't think she means that with regards to the likes of me however. I think she wants to protect the current status quo with the widening gap between rich and poor.

I mean really - do we want a Tory brexit or a Labour brexit? Because that is the choice. May avoids mentioning her party as much as possible during this campaign - she's trying to make it all about her and her being a safe pair of hands in the hope that we'll forget that she has a whole party behind her who have a long history of protecting the haves and only the haves.

Labour could win this if people get to see enough of May and Corbyn doing their thing.

KentMum2008 · 30/05/2017 07:38

Why is everyone ignoring Tory IRA affiliations?! It's actually absurd how brainwashed this nation is by smear campaigns and propaganda! I actually despair. Those who believe the Tories are the best thing for this country deserve to have their free healthcare and good quality education snatched away from them!

OP posts:
Wormulonian · 30/05/2017 07:38

I think there will be a very low turnout. There has absolutely zero campaigning in my area - the manifesto's lack detail.
If TM is going to cap care costs - what are they going to be?
What about Labour's plan to introduce a Land Value Tax to replace Council tax ? On figures I have just read about my Tax would rocket. I already really struggle to pay the £2k a year CT(which rises the maximum each year) for a modest 3 bed terrace (no holidays, new clothes etc). ( LVT - 3% based on around Land Value of approx.55% of house value)The interviewers never seem to push on these things.

As it was a Snap election - parties have not been able to get their details together. I felt sorry for Americans and the French with the main choices in their recent elections - we seem to be in the same position now. For the first time in 2 decades despite usually living in safe seats ( so my vote made little impact) I may not vote.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 07:40

Don't be so ridiculous. You may not agree with them but it is a democracy not a dictatorship.

Waterlemon · 30/05/2017 07:41

Last night Theresa May surprised me by saying that the conservatives were just 6 seats away from loosing their majority to Labour.

reverse psychology to make sure all the Tory voters return up on polling day?

Ive also wondered if the Tory party want to lose this election, leave someone else to deal with Brexit, then reappear in 5years time as ourr saviours !

Blimey01 · 30/05/2017 07:42

shinyredbus, What links does Corbyn have to the IRA?

And what are your views about May selling arms to Saudi Arabia? Is that okay?

Still waiting for a reply to this shinyredbus??

Waterlemon · 30/05/2017 07:43

Just found this ch4 news article explains the "6 seats" I just mentioned in my previous post.
