"UK home to 23,000 Jihadis"

This is the title from a Times article today. Bloody hell. This is a shockingly high number. I find this really scary. There really needs to be some major plan rather than just more waffle from this useless Government. I just don't see how this genie can be put back in the bottle and I think things will only get worse.

We're doomed really aren't we

I don't suppose anyone is going to bother defining what a jihadi is?

snotato · 27/05/2017 20:27

I hear you toast...I'm off to a friendlier thread.

SashaSashays · 27/05/2017 20:28

The old testament is pretty horrifying too but we don't vilify people for that.

Notsure1234 · 27/05/2017 20:30

What WhatToDo said. I don't understand why travel to Syria isn't a one way ticket. If you go then fine but you can't come back

JaneEyre70 · 27/05/2017 20:30

Wikepdia definition Jihadism (also jihadist movement, jihadi movement and variants) is a 21st-century neologism found in the Western languages to describe Islamist militant movements perceived as a military movement "rooted in Islam" and "existentially threatening" to the West.[1] It has been described as a "difficult term to define precisely", because it remains a recent neologism with no single, generally accepted meaning.[1] In classical Islamic law, Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion.[2] The term "jihadism" first appeared in South Asian media and was adopted by Western journalists in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.[3] It has since been applied to various insurgent and terrorist movements whose ideology is based on the notion of jihad.[4]

user666999 · 27/05/2017 20:31

There also a big risk from right-wing extremists like the one that killed Jo Cox.

The thing is that the attacks last week in Manchester are likely to radicalize right wing extremists so they need to start dealing with the root of the problem, they will kill two birds with one stone - if they stop jihadis they stop any potential backlash from radicalized right wing extremists.

janeeyre

The question is:

How are the 23,000 people defined?

blankface · 27/05/2017 20:36

We need to stop calling them jihadis, that boosts their ego and makes them think they are perceived as someone fighting the oppressors, lone warriors striking for their cause, brothers against the west.

Whereas, if all discussions called them misguided fools or something else derogatory but truthful, then the public and a lot of their young and impressionable contemporaries may stop glorifying them.

SashaSashays · 27/05/2017 20:36

I know what a jihadist is, I want to know what constitutes a jihadist in this context.

What do you have to do to be part of the 23,000? Visit a website, pay money, commit to carrying out some terrorist act?

WhatABaklava · 27/05/2017 20:36

Alternatively, UK is home to
65,000,000-23,000 non-jihadists.

As awful (and it absolutely was awful) Manchester was, they managed to kill less than 0.00004% of the uk population

The 911 attacks killed les than 0.0015% of the us population.

There will probably be more attacks. It will be horrible and people, maybe me, will be killed. But they are not going to destroy us.

(Unless North Korea sells them nuclear stuff. Then we could be a bit fucked.)

We need to calm down and retain perspective. Which is admittedly really hard in the face of such barbaric acts.

British citizens CAN be stripped of their citizenship. This is what has happened to some of the pedophiles from Rotherham;

The difference is between Muslim and Islamist.

Interesting spelling of 'pedophile'

Are you English?

Leanback · 27/05/2017 20:40

Some comments boarding on hate speech on this thread.

Human rights aren't something people have to evidence that they deserve. You can't just round every brown person up and start deporting without trial. If you want to live in a country without political correctness or human rights for all then move to Saudi Arabia or North Korea.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 27/05/2017 20:41

when you say not to let 'the ones' who go to Syria to fight back in, where are you suggesting they go if they're British citizens?

Who gives a shit? If they're going to Syria they're obviously against us, so we shouldn't let them back in as they're a danger to our society.

And that's a load of bullshit, snotato. Islam is NOT a peaceful religion. You only need look at the Qu'ran to see that.

Leanback · 27/05/2017 20:43

You do realise there are white British men who have gone off to Syria to fight with the rebels? Are they allowed back or is it just the brown ones?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 27/05/2017 20:44

So? Anyone who goes to fight for Syria should be denied entry back into Britain. This isn't a race issue, it's a religious issue.

user666999 · 27/05/2017 20:46

Are you English?

Yes, I am but I'm not the best speller though.

Why do you think they go off there in the first place?
What drives them?
Would it be better to prevent that in the first place?

Some people might suggest that a feeling of alienation in the country of their birth and prejudice they feel due to being Muslim drives some people away?

Lucked · 27/05/2017 20:47

Those men being stripped of British citizenship are dual nationals born abroad.

Leanback · 27/05/2017 20:47

Fight for Syria? Who does that entail exactly? Isis are only a small factor in the current Syrian civil war. What about the Kurds or Assad or any of the other factions.

You really have no clue.

Orlantina It isn't our fault they're against our country; we shouldn't be blamed for their murderous actions.

If they go, they shouldn't be allowed back.
