I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

Placemarking as fascinating thread.

Mine are Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica and Le Manor in Oxfordshire. Plus a secret one in Spain I don't want anyone else to find out about!

Manoir, bloody autocorrect

I was away getting ready for bed and it struck me that what I said wasnt nice even though there was no malice intended in my comments. The reality is that I live in a country where we have beautiful beaches and palm trees so it me its all very normal whereas my dad might find it all wonderful regardless of how manicured it looks because he lives in the rain for most of the year.

So, Im sorry for being so crass when it came to a holiday NavyandWhite loved and I wish her many more on the same beach, under the same palm trees.

Inverlochy Castle, Fort William, Scotland. We live almost locally and it was a real treat. we went all out and had the best room in the house (queen suite). It was extortionate but well worth it! loved every minute of it and we even added an extra day on to it. Food is very rich and wines are delicious. Only negative, there isn't a snack/sandwich menu for through the day. Going back for our 5 year anniversary.

I love the Dusit Thani in Bangkok, lovely hotel with a superb basic restaurant and a number of really good specialist ones, good access to Skytrain and underground, right by Lumpini Park.

Currarevagh House , Oughterard, Galway, just superb, a small, family run, mini stately home on a lake, with brilliant food. Not for those who want a modern slick place, but great afternoon teas!

Spanish Paradors, always amazing.

I was an expat for years so spent time in "luxurious" hotels plus I've also worked in London and spent time in "luxury county hotels" (can't remember all their names but Cliveden was one). They all become one as they all kind of have the same look (and the same, not so professional staff!)

TBH they are not all that.

I've had nicer, more relaxing times in rented cottages (not telling you where!)

Must add...the Burg Al Arab in Dubai was one of the tackiest I spent time in (work purposes). Mirrors on ceilings over the beds - that was a surprise!

I don't often stay in hotels, as we usually prefer the freedom of self-catering. However, one of the nicest places I have stayed is the Hotel Solar de Boaventura, in Madeira.

Chickpea, you saying that reminded me that carpet on the top floor made me feel nauseous & seasick. Totally ruined the afternoon tea.

Absolutely adored the Mandarin Oriental in Kuala Lumpur. DH used to stay there for business, so they knew him well. First time I went out to see him the lift attendants were calling me Mrs (DH's first name) when I went out on my own and they'd only seen me twice with him. The entire hotel was fabulous.

Also loved the Waldorf Astoria in New York, had a lovely room there.

My favourite was a wee place north of KL, Pangkor Island Beach Resort. Rooms over the water to watch the fish, outside shower and a swimming pool as a bath tub. Absolutely beautiful.

Conrad Tokyo is absolutely fabulous - upgrade to executive room is worth every penny (even better if it's complimentary). Normal rack rates are around $500 a night I think. You're provided with cotton pajamas to wear. DC get child sized pjs and child sized slippers, plus child size toothbrushes. At checkin you get Shinkansen bullet train water bottles. And kids get cookies and juice. Executive lounge is best we've ever been to in terms of food quality - evening food is usually samples from their fancy restaurants downstairs. Conrad rubber ducky in the bath to take home, mini Conrad embroidered teddy bears. Top notch service.

Pool terrace rooms at the Singapore marriott are awesome, plus the breakfast is one of the better ones I've had.

Resort wise, we really enjoyed Marriott nai yang - it's brand new and has rooms with swim up pools, private pools, etc etc.

We stayed at the Marriott executive apartments in Bangkok - a good option at a reasonable price, good location and very good service. Excellent breakfast buffet. Tuk tuk service to a large shopping center.

I've spent time in a few top hotels for work - but my fave London hotels are the Rosewood at Holborn and the Corinthia on Embankment. Both just gorgeous and stylish and impeccable service.

Also stayed at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, which is something else entirely..
