To ask you to name the best hotel you've ever stayed in?

I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

THe witchery is now on my hit list.

Wait4nothing · 22/05/2017 09:28

The Moon Palace - cancun - The Grand
We don't normally do luxurious holidays but loved the hot tub with views in the room, amazing restaurants, included room service and sister hotels so choice of pace (ours was the quietest hotel which was great - we could do the busy ones and chill at ours whenever suited)

We weren't particularly impressed with the Shangri La in Bangkok, even though we had a club room. It was really just our base for a short break so that was ok. Perhaps our experience was coloured by the fact that an executive of Tata has recently committed suicide from an upper floor, or that the hotel pool had rather too many elderly men with their Thai 'nieces' in attendance for my taste Hmm But that's Thailand for you.

The Banyan Tree is much nicer, IMO. Book ahead if you want to use the rooftop bar/restaurant.

We stayed in The Witchery, was an amazing experience. Would highly recommend their restaurant too.

RebelandaStunner · 22/05/2017 09:36

Sandals Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Le Tousserok, Mauritius
Headlands, Newquay

papooshka · 22/05/2017 09:43

Raffles Hotel Singapore... and we got engaged there :-)

averythinline · 22/05/2017 09:53

Mount Nelson Cape Town-It was a few years ago though - but was just 'special' not my usual cup of tea as slightly 'chintzy' but so beautifully done and with a generous hand as well....

The Lake Palace Udaipur - Like being on a film set - what they made of us dusty backpackers from the train we will never know as they were exceptionally gracious - didnt bat an eyelid on hoiking my rucksack to the boat and to the room

Looking back over all these hotels, it's just become clear that my favourite hotels are in places I like anway. I've stayed in 5*+ luxury in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Oman, and the hotels left me cold because I really dislike those places and their regimes. I went there on business because I had to, I wouldn't go there out of choice.

Notalotterywinner · 22/05/2017 09:56

Shandrani Hotel in Mauritius

The E&O Georgetown, Malaysia was fantastic too. We had our own butler.

Goa Marriott Resort
Not nearly as fancy as some of these listed here, I suspect. Possibly not the fanciest we've stayed in. But the staff, to a man/woman, were all amazing. Warm, friendly and super-helpful without being in any way intrusive.

Best ever....Quinta Do Estreito, Camara De Lob in maderia. Been a few times and each time its the most relaxing holiday. You arrive at the hotel walk through the white curtains in your hotel room to the balcony to be greating by an almost 180 degree view of the chistal clear blue sea, sun shining off it and in front of you a bottle of maderia wine and a maderia cake!!!!! Each time weve been we thought it cant be that good...but it is!!!!!!! I want to go now!!!!!!

Worse ever had the best views ever in the uk, but broken toilet seat, dirty and horrible breakfast if you could call it that!!! Reviews on trip adviser back that one up. Pity as it could be a gold mine!!!!

AuntieVenom · 22/05/2017 10:05

My ultimate favourite was the Cape Grace in Cape Town. We stayed for a week and it was outstanding.

CowParsleyNettle · 22/05/2017 10:06

We loved the Waldorf Hilton in London so we're staying at Rome Cavalieri next month.

Although despite booking it months ago we cant get into the restaurant which was one of the main reasons for booking.

Bovey Castle in Devon was good fun too.

ShangriLaLaLa · 22/05/2017 10:09

Another vote for Rasa Sayang, Penang. Stayed 6 or 7 times but haven't been back since DC2. Contemplating it for Easter but a bit perturbed about the hard rock and how it's changed it.

Far afield - Moose Lodge, NZ

Nearer - Vila Vita Parc, Algarve. Perfect fun family holiday.

Notalotterywinner · 22/05/2017 10:11

Lake Vrynwy hotel is my favourite UK hotel.

Twodogsandahooch · 22/05/2017 10:13

Really liked Hotel Portixol in Palma. Understated and calm

violetcloche · 22/05/2017 10:14

Holbeck Ghyll - Lake Windermere. Pushed the boat out for one of the best lake side rooms. Good restaurant & spa onsite.
Waterside Inn - Bray (great location for the Fat Duck round the corner!)
Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria - Sorrento. Guest lift down to ferry to Capri which was a great perk.
Villa Magna - Madrid - This was surprisingly, the most luxurious bedroom we've stayed in and was called the Hyatt Madrid back in the day. Marble bathroom, fantastic bed & really posh bedlinen - everything really...
In general, I'm too frugal to shell out £300+ per night for a high end hotel. All of the above, we've literally spent 1/2 nights at most.

Waldorf Astoria - NY was a disappointment. The public areas were impressive but our standard room was well, bog standard and we spent 4 nights there for a long weekend to celebrate DH's 40th.

Not in the least bit grand or anything, but I love Hotel Agelis in the picture-postcard Greek village of Kala Nera. You feel like one of the family, and that means one of the village community as it's very close-knit. Kala Nera is on the Pelion peninusla so not a well-known part of the country, and it's simply gorgeous. The hotel is owned and run by a father-and-son team and it's their pride and joy. I've stayed in much fancier and more expensive hotels, but this is my favourite.

deliciousdevilwoman · 22/05/2017 10:19

The Waldorf Astoria-New York
Hotel Excelsior Parc-Capri

magicstar1 · 22/05/2017 10:20

Ashford Castle is amazing...the accomodation was perfect, and the staff couldn't have been nicer.
Best stay ever was Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef. Absolute heaven.

loveka · 22/05/2017 10:20

Most memorable hotels for me
The Lake Country House Hotel Llangamarch Wells in Wales- perfect in every way.
Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath.
St David's Hotel in Cardiff- the most amazing views.

I stay in hotels all the time for work, so I'm very reluctant to pay for hotels for leisure. But I would pay for these ones!

lotusbomb · 22/05/2017 10:33

Yas Viceroy in Abu Dhabi is my favorite so far, definitely in recent years. I also stayed in a lovely little place that I can't remember the name of in Nuremburg a few years ago. Very understated but nice and clean with lovely service

ShotsFired · 22/05/2017 10:39

I mentioned this upthread. The Hard Rock is a tacky blot on the landscape Sad just seemed like an posh 18-30 when we drove by on a few occasions. Mind you, much of Batu Ferringhi is like that now.

As also mentioned upthread, I would recommend the E&O in George Town for both the amazing hotel and the location, but if you are set on BF, have you considered Lone Pine? www.lonepinehotel.com/main.php

The Cape Royale in Cape Town is pretty good for a 5 star hotel that won't break the bank.

The Passage in Basel is a great boutiquey hotel.
