To ask you to name the best hotel you've ever stayed in?

I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

The Peninsula in Bangkok is epic - we've been back four times. They send a vintage Rolls Royce to the airport to collect you 😃

VolunteerAsTribute · 22/05/2017 10:56

Any Shangri La. We're members. The BK one is great. A lovely buffet on Sat evenings overlooking the river. I have to go there a couple of times a year for work.

Best hotel ever would be Banyan Tree, Phuket. Friday's, Boracay was amazing too and I'd choose the Philippines over Thailand.

Discovery Shores, Boracay was amazing too.

Animal Kingdom Lodge in Walt Disney World. Amazing.

starlight36 · 22/05/2017 11:21

La Mamounia in Marrakesh. A long time ago - late 90s but beautiful decor and poolside area was amazing. Only place I've been where I got to point at a spot I wanted to lie and a very comfortable sun lounger was wheeled there for me. The concierge managed to book us into great restaurants.

Bellagio, Las Vegas. Amazing views of the strip and fountains, heavenly swimming pools and a bed so comfy I never wanted to get up!

EastDulwichWife · 22/05/2017 11:29

Holbeck Ghyll in the Lakes, The Tresanton in St Mawes or Hambleton Hall in Rutland.

Another vote for the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The pool is amazing.

I really liked the Intercontinental in Mauritius, lovely service and beautiful pool/sea swimming.

Auchan · 22/05/2017 11:36

Dolce Hotel - Munich

Ritz Carlton Herzliya - Tel Aviv

Hotel Antico Mulino Scorze - Outside Venice

anahata · 22/05/2017 11:36

Another vote for the Shangri-la Rasa Sayang in Penang, and also Ocean Paradise in Zanzibar.

NotPennysBoat · 22/05/2017 11:41

The Four Seasons Hualalai on Big Island, Hawaii.
Pure paradise, impeccable service, spectacular rooms.

Bishoplyn · 22/05/2017 11:44

Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat near Nice- didn't stay there but went to a New Years Eve Party once. Have never forgotten the stunning setting and extraordinary food and service.

Bora Bora Intercontinental wins hands down for me.
We had one of those overwater bungalows on stilts - the bungalow was bigger than our flat at home, even had a walk-in wardrobe. You coulr of course just go swimming straight from the villa. And if not in the mood for that, you could slide the coffee table open, and feed the fish swimming below straight from your living room.
Of course, the food and spa werre equally fabulous. And Bora Bora is exactly as gorgeous as Google Images show.

Cinnamon lodge in Sri Lanka.
Individual chalets set in amongst the jungle - absolutely stunning, and made our honeymoon.

Sunshineandgin · 22/05/2017 13:54

Viroths hotel in Siem Reap, gorgeous style and great staff.

Thesofaneedsmetositonit · 22/05/2017 14:58

Can we get this put into Classics so I can refer to it in future please?

Banyan Tree, Mexico.
It was an upgrade at £12,000 per night 10 years ago. We'll never get anything like it again.

loveka · 22/05/2017 15:08

Forgot Hotel Widder in Zurich. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. As is Zurich.

Pradaqueen · 22/05/2017 15:31

Best by far - Aman Venice. I've stayed there twice. Anywhere where the staff answer 'whatever time you'd like it' in response to 'what time is breakfast?' Is pretty perfect in my book. I actually spent Xmas there year before last. Best Xmas ever.

Coincidentally I was supposed to be staying at the Aman in Marrakech this week but they've been forced to cancel. I'm going to the Royal Mansour instead which seems pretty fantastic.

I'd also recommend the mandarin oriental in Marrakech too. And the one and only Dubai - Arabian court as pretty smashing and brilliant if you have kids.

NotCitrus · 22/05/2017 16:35

Agree with Pradaqueen that breakfast should be whenever you want.
Some that have gone the extra mile to provide friendly helpful service:

Dumbleton Hall, Cotswolds near Evesham
Ringlestone Inn, near Leeds Castle, Kent
Hotel Color, Bardolino, Lake Garda
The Harlem Flophouse (breakfast is at an excellent diner down the road when you want it)
Grand Hotel, Verona.

Hiltons are always reliably competent, just a bit bland.

See I really don't like Hiltons, I think the're like travel Lodge with a fancy name! The one in Vegas was ok but only because we had a spa bath in the bedroom 😁

Any recommendations for Hanoi?

W hotel in San Francisco. Window seats overlooking the GG bridge where I'd while away my jet lag watching the fog roll away.

The Abbey Hotel in Bath, central, quirky, lovely, fab breakfast, good cocktails.

LakieLady · 22/05/2017 17:26

Wow, you lot don't half go to some exotic places. Mine will seem so modest: The Powder Mills, near Battle in Sussex.

Lovely rooms, great service but not at all up itself, friendly staff who aren't in your face, beautiful gardens and a lovely wilderness with a lake, fantastic food and the best breakfast I've ever had. The first time I went, the fuse for the mains in our room went and I couldn't have my 6am cuppa. The night porter was so apologetic you'd have thought it was his fault, brought me a lovely tea tray with toast and preserves and when we settled the bill, they knocked the price of the wine (£42) off our bill to make up for it. Best of all, it's dog-friendly and everyone seemed to really like dogs. At breakfast, we were given an extra sausage for her.

Worst was a complete shithole in Amsterdam, near the station. I've stayed in squats that were cleaner and nicer.

I was pleasantly surprised the only time I stayed in a Premier Inn. I'd gone to Hull for my friend's funeral, and booked it because it wasn't far from their house, where the wake was being held. The
room was massive, it had a lovely view across a country park to the river and the Humber Bridge, was spotlessly clean, quiet and really comfortable. If I ever had to go to Hull for any reason, I'd stay there again.

FatFacedDog · 22/05/2017 17:32

I know that premier in LakieLady, it is nice! Next to Home Farm Pub and resteraunt

I nearly got married at the powdermills lakielady - ultimately the draw of the sea was too much and maybe a weird rule on rooms but lovely place.
