To ask you to name the best hotel you've ever stayed in?

I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

Marriott garden resort in Bangkok or plazza hotel in Kuala Lumpur or one Devonshire gardens in glasgow

Mablethorpe · 22/05/2017 18:45

The Landmark in London was wonderful, went for our 5th wedding anniversary ten years ago so things may have changed since!

The Maritime Jolie Ville in Sharm was great too but again, that was in 2009 and I doubt I'd go back to Egypt at all now if I'm honest.

Love this thread. Sadly hotels in exotic places are part of a distant child-free past but I like to dream. And I'm noting all the UK ones!

We stayed at an amazing safari lodge called Beho Beho in Tanzania. Also loved the Witchery and Chewton Glen.

The Address, Dubai Marina 👌👌👌

There must be some deep pockets about. I've stayed in just three foreign hotels. One in Houlgate, France on a school trip decades ago. It was adequate. The other two were in Slovenia and were slightly stuck in the past but clean and comfortable. Hotel Kanin in Bovec and Hotel Zlatarog in Bohinjska Bistrica.

Best hotel - without a shadow of a doubt, this place.

Best family friendly hotel I've ever stayed in was the Evesham Hotel in the Cotswolds. We had a family gathering there for my FIL's 70th and everyone from the 70 year olds to 3 year olds loved it.

Worst hotel. I've stayed in a few grim Travelodges, but biggest disappointment was The Grand in Brighton because it cost an arm and a leg and the room was tiny, bed uncomfortable and the staff snooty.

Lakielady I stayed at Powdermills the night of my Dad's funeral and it was so beautiful and the staff so lovely that it is actually a very happy memory.

Dar Al Masyaf Suite at The Madinat in Dubai
Lamplighter Inn in Carmel, California
Bath Spa Hotel

BringMeTea · 22/05/2017 19:19

Have not read all the thread but as you mentioned Bangkok have to put a vote for The Conrad. Have stayed in several 5 stars there but that is my fave. Mind you there are many many great hotels in the city. Would also suggest you consider serviced apartments there.

Four Seasons Hong Kong Harbour - gorgeous. Had really bad jet lag and spent a pleasant night watching the boats go in and out

Terres M'Barka, Morocco. We were lucky enough to be some of their first guests and it may have changed since. The staff were all so excited whenever we asked for anything! But it also had a fourposter daybed on the balcony, a man who made up a log fire in your bedrooms, etc and was surrounded by stunning working farms leading up to mountains... Felt totally authentic and unique.

Or the Elbow Beach hotel Bermuda, just for the chef. I still miss that chef and it was 17 years ago.

Boiing · 22/05/2017 20:07

Worst hotel was in Serbia. The bed was made of foam. The shape of the precious occupant was permanent, and everything stank of cigarettes.

IllBeAtTheSpa · 22/05/2017 20:11

I'm keen to try Claridges and the Savoy

The Wickininnish Inn on Vancouver Island. Breathtaking views from a huge 2 person bath by a panoramic window.

GloriousGoosebumps · 22/05/2017 22:42

The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong was probably the best hotel we’ve stayed in, however, we honeymooned in the Ritz in Paris which was quite an experience and the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel in Hawaii was pretty amazing with boats and trains to travel around the site. The Savoy in London was full of old time glamour and we were upgraded to a suite.

The worst hotel was a hotel in Florence. We were holidaying in Rome and decided to take ourselves off to Florence for one night. Found the hotel through their tourist office and felt pretty pleased with ourselves. Silly us, we were eaten alive during the night! Thankfully it was just the one night.

The Radisson SAS in Tallinn by far the best breakfast ever

sparkli · 22/05/2017 22:56

Gleneagles, Scotland. Beautiful and great service.

Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. The smell of coconut piped through the aircon in public areas was divine. When I smell coconut now I am instantly transported back. Great food and drink, too.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/05/2017 22:59

How could I forget the Wickininnish!

Also Crieff Hydro in Scotland.

ginghamstarfish · 22/05/2017 23:01

The Plaza in New York, on honeymoon

Haliez13 · 22/05/2017 23:43

Le Jardin des Douars in Morocco. It was like an oasis of total tranquility. We had one of the little cabins in the grounds, with its own private balcony. I loved it. The Sunday BBQ there is also incredible.

For the best games drives and accommodation:
Singita Private Game Reserve In the Kruger Park, South Africa

More favourites:-
The Splendido, Portofino
Four Seasons, Chiang Mai

Raffles Hotel Singapore, The Plaza New York, The Fairmont Lake Louise, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, Hotel Bel Air Los Angeles, Four Seasons Seattle and an amazing small traditional Japanese Hotel/Pension with Onsen in Nagano.

Honestly though, these days I prefer to use AirBnb. I've experienced some amazing properties this way and it's just less fuss when you aren't being waited upon (I know that sounds illogical) and constantly having to remember to carry spare cash for tipping every hotel employee that crosses your path...

ShangriLaLaLa · 23/05/2017 09:39

@ShotsFired That's interesting about Penang. We haven't been back since I was expecting DS and he's now 7. DD is so keen to return but I think it's more that it reminds her of a time when she had our undivided attention!

That said, we've always loved Rasa Sayang and in all the years going there it felt a little bit like a second home. Maybe we need to be a bit more bold. We've walked past the Lone Pine so many times - looks fabulous after its refurb.

Off to search any flight deals on KLM!

Notmynom · 23/05/2017 09:46

If you are looking for Bangkok recommendations it is hard to beat the Peninsula.

Gritti Palace in Venice, Hotel de Russie in Rome, Oberoi in Mauritius and Anassa in Cyprus are my favourites.

Travelodge in Dover less good.
