To ask you to name the best hotel you've ever stayed in?

I love hotels. The best I've ever stayed in is probably a toss up between the Shard in London (Shangri-La) or Phu Petra in Krabi, Thailand.

Do you have any memorable (for the right reasons) hotel stays? Currently trying to organise this years holiday and can't decide on hotels.

On the contrary, the worst was a hotel (so called) in koh Pangan which was an absolute hell hole. Concrete shack with a concrete block topped with a mucky old mattress for a bed! I cried!

Raffles in Singapore was very special, that was our honeymoon.
We like Oberois- we have stayed at Lombok, Cairo and Hurgarda.

As much as I loved Raffles Singapore, the mandarin oriental in KL topped it for service

I've stayed at 4 shangri las worldwide (including some named above) and always found the service to be lacking for the level of hotel that they claim to be. Rasa Ria in Borneo for example didn't get a drink right first time in the week we were there (and a pint of tiger and a vodka Diet Coke isn't exactly hard), and serving prawns as an amuse buche 10 minutes after discussing shellfish allergies with them.

Snails, is the Mandarin Oriental buffet as good as the one at time square in KL? Are used to love going to the Berjaya at time square at mealtime. The buffet was absolutely amazing. During hari raya, I came downstairs one night and there was a red carpet. I asked who was there, and it was the Sultan. Apparently he thought the food was as good as I did!

Unfortunately, one day one of the staf told me that people like me shouldn't be going there. It put a huge damper on things, but I just reported it so the GM could have a word with him.

Salthouse Harbour in Ipswich. Took dh there for his 40th. Got pissed at dinner, passed out early and the poor man went out on his own for a pint! Luckily I had a surprise party planned for him at home the following day which made up for it. He was surprisingly understanding when it happened though.

The Lowood on Windermere comes a close second, mainly for the quality of breakfast and the beautiful location.

Worst was one in Lowestoft but I can't remember its name.

Ive stayed in some fabulous hotels but nowadays I much prefer a really good Airbnb property. At 60 I'm over fabulous hotels and much prefer the comforts of home. Its really daft things like a tea pot, a good sized cup and fresh milk to make a cuppa whenever I want.

That said though, I really did enjoy my stay at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi a few weeks ago. It was like stepping back in time to days when things were done properly. Things like tea made the correct way. I even had a hot water bottle in my bed because it was cold. Bliss.

The Al-Bustan Palace in Muscat, Oman for sheer luxury

I'm surprised people are mentioning the Al Bustan in Muscat. Granted the decor is lovely, as is the pool abd beach area, but the service and the catering is way below par and nothing compared to how it's as previously. We no longer go if we are after a weekend away with the whole familiy and we don't want to travel.

The Kruisheren hotel in Maastricht,The Netherlands. A wonderful design hotel - each room with plenty of loely design objects. It is based in a former 15th century monastery and the restaurant is in an amazing hall.

Dar Al Masyaf in Dubai (still love the novelty of hailing a boat to take us to breakfast)
Shangri La in Singapore. Went for our honeymoon and got upgraded to a suite bigger than our flat - incredible.

UK - The William Cecil in Stamford. Incredible food, super comfortable beds and in a beautiful town.

Interested to see how many people rate the KL shangri la, booked in for a few days over the Grand Prix weekend in October.

scaryteacher · 22/05/2017 06:48

The Hotel Maximilian in Oberammergau, and The Horn of Plenty in Devon. I loathe Travelodge, and tend to use Premier Inn when going back and forth from home to the UK, as they are consistent, and I can always sleep. I like the Lamb at Hindon too, great food and comfortable rooms.

The best hotel I stayed in was the Farmer's Daughter in LA. Wasn't impressed with LA but loved the hotel. It was really individual and quirky.

The worst was Travellodge in Brighton. We arrived in a heatwave but there were no fans or aircon and the window would only open centimeters. There was broken skirting outside the room. It's opposite a couple of nightclubs so became really noisy at about 3am.....and we were on the 8th floor with windows that would only open a few cms!

Banyan tree in Koh Samui or the Ritz Carlton in Dubai.

Mandraki · 22/05/2017 07:16

Daffodil hotel and spa in Grasmere, oh my god, just loved it. Been ages since we went but we still talk about it. Hotel was beautiful, surroundings were stunning and we had a lovely couples Rasul mud therapy treatment. Got 4 and a bit months until I give birth to first child so hoping to go back before then otherwise we'll never make it back!

I've never stayed anywhere really fancy but ones that stood out were the Hotel Paseo del Arte in Madrid as the bed and shower were top notch, and a 'wine hotel' we stayed in in the Mosel in Germany. Every room was wine-themed and you could order any bottle of wine from the local vineyards up to your room (as well as bring your remains up from dinner). There was a hot tub in the room, next to the bed. Would have been absolutely amazing if we hadn't had a toddler with us Hmm

Mandarin Oriental in KL,
Raffles in Singapore
Gleneagles
Bird Island Lodge Seychelles

ImNegan · 22/05/2017 07:28

The Shangi-La in Manila

ShotsFired · 22/05/2017 08:04

I am amazed at (1) all the people who have been to Penang and (2) not stayed at the E&O. It is such a beautiful hotel steeped in history. We stay there relatively frequently as we do a stop over on our way elsewhere.

(I like a beach, but I can't fathom why people want to stay at Batu Ferringhi at all though, when Georgetown is so much more interesting for a holiday and you can incorporate beach visits as and when. And even if the not great anymore especially since that ghastly Hard Rock was built beach is all you care about, Lone Pine beats all the big chains hands down anyway)

Westray · 22/05/2017 08:15

TBH I have enjoyed staying at £2 a night beach huts in remote islands in Thailand more than any fancy hotels.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 22/05/2017 08:20

The Library Hotel in New York

tanfield90 · 22/05/2017 08:24

I'm not well-travelled so mine are very modest. First is The Overcliff Hotel in Southbourne, Bournemouth. Last stayed there in 1974, demolished in 2002 and replaced with a fancy apartment block called Seascape. I was only a bairn but I remember it well. The other one I like is The Clayton at Manchester Airport, previously Bewleys and The Holiday Inn Garden Court before that. Not fancy but a consistently good standard in the twenty years since it opened. I must have stayed there about fifty times.

Westray · 22/05/2017 08:32

tanfield- are you from Leith?

BoredOnMatLeave · 22/05/2017 08:45

Best - The Palazzo, Vegas
Worst - Route 66 Motel, Springfield

tigerdriverII · 22/05/2017 08:48

The Donnafugata Golf Resort, in Sicily. We were double booked for our first choice hotel and the company through which we booked offered us this. I, loathing the notion of golf and golfers, made a huge fuss resulting in us being upgraded.

There were virtually no golfers, the grounds were astounding, the reception rooms stunning, and the food was fab. Our upgraded rooms were just the most luxurious and as they didn't do family rooms DS (who would I think have been 13 at the time) had his own 5* room.

Still don't like golfGrin

DeliciouslyHella · 22/05/2017 08:50

Mango Bay - Barbados
The Signature at MGM - Las Vegas

The Witchery in Edinburgh was completely out of this world.
