thats all. I hope I'm not being impertinent with this question....

OP posts:
GourmetGold · 12/05/2017 16:11

I hardly ever drink, I don't really feel the need to...I don't seem to get that 'lift' from it that others talk about (unlike chocolate!) & don't enjoy the taste that much, it makes my stomach churn all night & i don't sleep very well. Prefer a nice homemade lemon juice or cup of tea.

I get a 'numbing/out of my head/don't feel like me' effect from alcohol, but I'm happy being myself & don't want to feel 'out of it' 99% of the time.

I'm not bothered about morphing into a 'fun, wild' version of myself, I'm quite happy to be average, very boring me!

I totally love my home time doing knitting, sketching, sewing & don't think alcohol would mix.

BORING GEEK ALERT! ShockHalo

TimetohittheroadJack · 12/05/2017 16:12

I drink cause I like getting drunk!

I like the taste (well of the things I do drink) but there is nothing better in life than going out with friends and loved ones for food, wine and some after dinner drinks.

Hangovers aren't great, but you've got to pay the piper.

BertieBotts · 12/05/2017 16:15

I wish I liked the taste of alcohol, I quite like the effects but not the taste! I only ever drink to be social.

GreenPetal94 · 12/05/2017 16:16

I like the relaxed and slightly dizzy way I feel after a couple of drinks. I also enjoy being more drunk but hangovers are getting worse now I'm old. And I like the taste.

Gottagetmoving · 12/05/2017 16:19

I like the taste of wine and the early effects of being drunk...but wish it would stay at that level. Unfortunately it doesn't so I restrict myself to a few glasses once a week.
When I was younger I drank a lot with little ill effect.
If I could drink wine all day without suffering, I would.

luckylucky24 · 12/05/2017 16:20

I like having something other than cordial to drink. I don't drink tea/coffee/fresh juices so other than juice or coke I don't drink much. It's nice to have an alternative some evenings. That said I am just as happy with some of the alcohol free ones.

GourmetGold · 12/05/2017 16:34

I'd just add I haven't always felt this way! I've done a fair amount of CBT self-help to feel easier in my own company, to like & accept myself, warts & all..a zillion imperfections.
I used to be a binge eater and do self-harm (cutting) and was so low I wanted to die.

If people genuinely enjoy drink & it improves their life that's great, but if it's to avoid feelings & you're depressed..there is another way Flowers

wtffgs · 12/05/2017 16:39

Good wine tastes awesome and feels lovely. I rarely drink anything else apart from real ale.

Sadly, my tolerance levels have plummeted with age 😞

GreatFuckability · 12/05/2017 16:48

I love being pissed. drunken conversations with friends have been some of my very best memories. sadly, my body can't handle alcohol anymore, even a small glass has me shitting through the eye of a needle so i can't anymore.
it's sad.

Crowshay · 12/05/2017 23:12

OP, put us out of our misery, please.

toobreathless · 12/05/2017 23:44

I don't drink alcohol other than possibly Christmas/toasts at weddings etc.

No particular reason other than I'm just not that fussed and often driving as we live very rurally.

BonnieF · 12/05/2017 23:59

I enjoy a pint of ale at the pub, a G&T as an aperitif, a glass of Rioja with roast lamb, a Bavarian weissbier with a curry, Pimm's on a summer picnic, champagne with fish & chips etc etc. Not all at the same time, obv.

Wine & beer are delicious and if consumed sensibly, one of life's pleasures.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 13/05/2017 00:03

I don't really drink as such. I'm not teetotal by choice, it's just that I don't like the taste of most alcohol and then because I don't drink often, a single unit makes me feel really dizzy!

I probably drink twice a year, maybe three times. DP and I went all inclusive and had half a glass of fizz with dinner one night and a monitor once. We chose drinks from the kids Mocktail menu Blush

I think if he drank more often I probably would too, but it's just a bit something we do. His ex is an alcoholic which might explain why he doesn't drink either.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 13/05/2017 00:04

Monitor?! Mojito FFS

TheShoeLady · 13/05/2017 00:07

I drink tea, water, coke and fruit juice

When I first met DP and he was coming round my house for the first time I asked what he liked to drink. His answer was Ribena 😍

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/05/2017 00:19

But I do think tee total people once had a problem and the only way they can beat it is to abstain.

Oh really? Hmm

Not because somewhere along the line I seem to have become allergic to alcohol, so after one glass I have about fifteen minutes before a force 9 migraine hits? Then I vomit for 12 to 18 hours.
Can't imagine why I stopped...

asyesowsoshallyereap · 13/05/2017 08:17

"I often wonder what the vintners buy
One half so precious as they sell..."

If it's good enough for Omar Khayyam, then it's good enough for me.

DreamilyLookingOutOfTheWindow · 13/05/2017 13:10

I drink to avoid being put on anti depressants

corythatwas · 13/05/2017 13:25

I feel about wine pretty well the same way I feel about prawns or cream gateau: it's a nice taste that I enjoy occasionally, but my world wouldn't collapse if you were to tell me that I can never have a cream gateau again. Seldom drink more than one glass; if dh and I buy a bottle as we occasionally do, it will last us over two evenings. But is definitely something I enjoy.

Not keen on the taste of soft drinks though. Now if you'd asked me why people drink coke, I would really struggle to come up with an answer. Sweet and cloying and generally disgusting.

IntheBenefitTrap · 13/05/2017 23:51

I don't drink and I have never, ever had am alcohol problem.

Napoliforte · 14/05/2017 00:17

I don't drink, and haven't since I was seriously ill a couple of years ago. I prefer this version of me. And I'm stunned at how dull drunks are.

I used to really put it away too but my health is more important so I've had to redefine "me". I realised some friends were actually just drinking partners and I'm no longer included in their invitations. And without fail the ones who make a fuss of my not drinking, are the ones who appear to me to be on the way to a problem.

susanboozan · 14/05/2017 18:50

Too many teetotallers here. Go and find another thread. This thread is about why you drink, not to tell us you don't.

Whew. Just finished a humungous glass of Rioja. And feeling all the better for it.

LOL.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 14/05/2017 18:55

I know you asked why people do, but my reason or NOT drinking is i have OCD, depression and an unstable bladder. Having to have a wee is a source of great distress and alcohol is a dehydrant, as well as a depressant, so it would make me extremely anxious and struggle to function having to very frequently wee due to alcohol. I've also found things like alcopops give me awful indigestion, and never found a wine i like the taste of.
Don't mind the taste of some spirits or ciders, but they don't taste good enough to distress myself with needing to pee every half hour to drink.

StrangeLookingParasite · 15/05/2017 09:50

Too many teetotallers here. Go and find another thread. This thread is about why you drink, not to tell us you don't.

And there you have a perfect example of how offended some people are by those of us who don't drink alcohol, for whatever the reason.

IntheBenefitTrap · 15/05/2017 10:04

Sounds like someone has issues Grin
