thats all. I hope I'm not being impertinent with this question....

Because I'm an alcoholic. Mostly in recovery, with occasional relapses.

I don't enjoy alcohol. I almost envy those who do, and who can enjoy it casually and for fun. But for me, it's an addiction, a compulsion, not a pleasure. The days of being able to get drunk and laugh and dance are long gone for me.

So that's why I do and DON'T drink Wink

IloveBanff · 12/05/2017 14:50

IntheBenefitTrap You comment that it makes you feel ill the next day seems to indicate that you believe that everyone who drinks, drinks to excess. Why?

chitofftheshovel · 12/05/2017 14:50

I drink to remember and to forget!!!

Alison100199 · 12/05/2017 14:52

I love the taste and how it makes me feel. Simple as that. I do drink sensibly though.

MackerelOfFact · 12/05/2017 14:52

It tastes nice, I associate it with relaxation and socialising, and it feels like a treat. I also like feeling a little bit tipsy (but I don't really like being drunk).

Dozer · 12/05/2017 14:53

Primarily because of social pressure: the people I know almost all drink, and things they invite me to involve drinking.

I do like the taste and in the immediate moment it really helps my anxiety, but I find more than one or two units, and tiredness due to disturbed sleep, bad for my mental health the next day.

SaucyJack · 12/05/2017 14:54

I drink to relax. I don't naturally have an off switch.

If I don't have a drink I'm up til 2am having imaginary arguments with people I saw in the supermarket 7 years ago.

Clandestino · 12/05/2017 14:55

I drink because I need water to survive. I am fussy though so I prefer herbal teas, especially the cinnamon and liquorice ones.

myoriginal3 · 12/05/2017 15:00

Because I am compelled to.

Ipigglemustdie · 12/05/2017 15:00

Soul destroying boredom mostly. The idea of coming home from work with nothing but sleep then back to work fills me with dread. That and it's easier to source than heroin

n0ne · 12/05/2017 15:00

I love the taste of most alcoholic drinks, and I like to feel slightly buzzed. It helps conversation flow. It relaxes you, but can also get the creative juices flowing, or just make you that teeny bit braver to do something. It can make a fun occasion even more fun (but equally can amplify negative feelings). Hangovers aren't great, I'll grant you.

wineusuallyhelps · 12/05/2017 15:00

It's my treat a couple of nights a week; and it relaxes me.

I haven't been properly drunk since 2003. Don't like it and it's not worth it.

The most I ever get is 'tipsy' and that's not even once a month.

HazelBite · 12/05/2017 15:02

That first cup of tea in the morning is heaven, much better than any other drink in the day!
I can take or leave alcohol, I like a nice Irish Whisky, but have to be in the mood for it. Wine leaves me cold, gin is like drinking perfume.
I enjoy a glass of pimms in the summer and various cocktails, but if you told me I'd never have be able to drink again it really wouldn't bother me.

LobsterQuadrille · 12/05/2017 15:04

Pure escapism which is why I'm in AA. I always hated the taste.

deadringer · 12/05/2017 15:06

I find that alcohol, taken in sufficient quantity produces all the effects of drunkenness.

mando12345 · 12/05/2017 15:09

Makes me forget my chronic pain, but I keep within healthy limits.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 12/05/2017 15:11

.

SemiNormal · 12/05/2017 15:13

Presuming you mean alcohol here?

I don't really drink much now - mostly to celebrate an occasion (as in a glass of wine with Christmas meal ... just seems 'right' to do so).

I used to drink to self medicate my mental health problems. This is also the reason I no longer drink. Although I was never an alcoholic drink was problematic for me in the sense that I would binge and act in ways that would cause embarrassment and shame. Ever so thankful camera phones weren't a 'thing' during my drinking years Blush

Frazzledmum123 · 12/05/2017 15:13

Because I prefer the person I become when mildly tipsy. It's the real me before anxiety and shyness take over. I don't worry or over analyse things and god that's a relief! I'm a social drinker too though, rarely drink at home. I don't much like the taste of most but having a 5mth old who I'm bf means I haven't drank for 14months and I have to admit I'm really missing it!

brasty · 12/05/2017 15:14

I love the taste of red wine. If you could get a non alcoholic version that tasted the same, I would drink that. It is not about the alcohol to me.

BorisTrumpsHair · 12/05/2017 15:14

I've always drunk:
for fun
to relax
to heighten sensations
to block feelings/emotions
because I like it
because drinks are delicious and refreshing
its social
I can't smoke joints in public.

These days I've gone right off alcohol, so I only drink very occasionally with friends, or a g&t at night to "relax".

Plus I no longer smoke joints.

I feel deathly dull, but also healthier and more content in myself.

WhooooAmI24601 · 12/05/2017 15:15

Because all of my best stories begin "So we were spangled on tequila..." Not a single one of my adventures began with a cup of Rhubarb and Ginger Teapigs (very nice though it may be).

VeganCow · 12/05/2017 15:15

I rarely drink. Hate the taste of most alcohol, although a malibu n coke is quite nice. I also dont like the feeling of being drunk.

YouWhatMate · 12/05/2017 15:16

I will add my reasons in a bit, it just really occurred to me today ...

Oooh, how suspenseful. I think I'll give my reasons in a bit, too.

Sorry everyone, you're just going to have to wait to find out why I drink!

HomityBabbityPie · 12/05/2017 15:17

I don't. Don't like the taste and don't like feeling tipsy.

People hate me for it Confused
