I know it's bad form to point it out in the midst of someone else's distress, but seriously, am I the only one who has noticed it?

"your defiantly wrong"
"have you considered councilling"
"their going to take over"
"alot of people don't bother"

I'm not expecting Samuel Pepys but seriously, I find it difficult to respond as the wider point is lost amidst the terrible writing!

Just putting this here

smilingsarahb · 19/04/2017 16:43

Typing one handed on a teeny device, whilst doing something else at the same time, on a machine that autocorrects everything, doesn't make for good reading.

Batteriesallgone · 19/04/2017 16:43

Well I'm sure it does, but that wasn't my point was it?

wiccamum · 19/04/2017 16:43

Really op? "my IPad hates bad grammar"?

Seriously!?

Sorry...seriously couldn't resist...no, stop it Wicca, stop, bad Wicca, no.

Seriously, I need help.

ExplodedCloud · 19/04/2017 16:44

My phone is a bothering (I typed blithering) idiot that makes up all sorts of utter rubbish including new words that don't exist. I fear it will expose me under any name change with the yooneek spelling.

And there's voice recognition software that some VI posters use to throw into the mix.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 19/04/2017 16:45

Bothering idiot describes my children quite well Grin

Some people didn't get a great education because of their social background. Some people have dyslexia. Some people have visual impairments. Some people make a perfectly sensible distinction between "Extremely Urgent Crown Court Document" and "forum post" and expend their proof-reading energies accordingly. Some people's devices are very "helpful". Some people are in a rush but want to contribute anyway. Some people have had a couple of glasses and also want to contribute anyway. Some people are assisted by toddlers, cats, and other little lifeforms. Some people are exhausted, upset, or angry and looking for help. All of these reasons and more besides can produce less than flawlessly presented posts.

If you're going to spend your time being annoyed at all these people, then I think you're going to spend a lot of miserable nights cuddled up with nothing but your sense of superiority for company.

NotStoppedAllDay · 19/04/2017 16:46

'To be honest' ? What is that all about? to be honest

Awful

CheeseQueen · 19/04/2017 16:46

On MN? Seriously? I can honestly say this is one of the most literate boards on the internet!
I think you're just on the windup as I've never seen anything on here like what you're saying.
FB, on the other hand?!

kali110 · 19/04/2017 16:47

my phone changes things to what it thinks is correct.
Your counsellin

RortyCrankle · 19/04/2017 16:47

One of the best went something like "He should of went to the doctors with myself" Grin

Sparklingbrook · 19/04/2017 16:47

I really don't care. As long as I can understand what the poster is saying it doesn't matter to me.
If you have problems trying to decipher what 'alot' could possibly mean then it's a bit sad really.

wiccamum · 19/04/2017 16:47

Op, you said "Hun"

Your argument is invalid

Crapuccino · 19/04/2017 16:48

There's such a thing as "punching down", OP. Look it up.

kali110 · 19/04/2017 16:49

Damm phone.
My phone refuses to spell counselling, it spells it councilling.
It is completely confused by definitely, i have multiple spellings for that Confused
I don't even have my autocorrect on, it's just my dictionary!

DevilWearsPrimark · 19/04/2017 16:50

My phone autocorrects "were" to "we're" nearly every time, it's only because I've checked everything it's started to believe I mean what I type.
In the case of "alot", I find this a case of interesting language development, such as how the word "almost" comes from a contraction of "all" and "most" (via old English), and so, indeed, do a lot of words beginning with "a", in particular "al".
In the case of Samuel Pepys you'll find the way he spells things very different to how they are presented these days, as you start to increase the accessibility of the written word (through books, newspapers, magazines and Internet forums), so you'll start to see changes in the language as more people use it.

MaisyPops · 19/04/2017 16:50

Can't say it bothers me too much on here.
That said I have fat thumb issues so if I'm replying quickly it's not a case of autocorrect more speed typing doesn't tend to go well.

I've got better things to do online than get annoyed at people for grammar issues that annoy me enough in real life

freshmaker3000 · 19/04/2017 16:51

Definitely not on the majority of posts. When I do see it, I can't bring myself to be bothered tbh.

ifcatscouldtalk · 19/04/2017 16:53

I don't think basic literacy skills on this board are particularly bad. I personally don't get wound up by spelling mistakes. No one is sitting their English exam on here. Also as previously mentioned some people struggle with literacy. I suspect my own husband is dyslexic and it got missed. Do you want a forum where only people with a certain level of literacy can join in?

littleoldladywho · 19/04/2017 16:53

I miss the grammer police. I really do.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/04/2017 16:54

it's like the law of the universe that any post concerning spag will result in a typo!

That would be Muphry's Law.Grin

honeyfull · 19/04/2017 16:54

Doesn't bother me at all. I can usually get the point of the post, or the poster corrects it quickly enough.

Eats shoots and leaves.

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 19/04/2017 16:55

Who's going to take the minutes?! (Looks round for suitable team player)

ifcatscouldtalk · 19/04/2017 16:55

Well put crapucinno Grin
