I know it's bad form to point it out in the midst of someone else's distress, but seriously, am I the only one who has noticed it?

"your defiantly wrong"
"have you considered councilling"
"their going to take over"
"alot of people don't bother"

I'm not expecting Samuel Pepys but seriously, I find it difficult to respond as the wider point is lost amidst the terrible writing!

When using a proper keyboard, I find that I sometimes mistype a word automatically. Eg. I might type there instead of their, not because I don't know the difference, but because I'm a fast typist and my fingers seem to go on auto-pilot for some words that I use more frequently. I also make loads of typos as, while I'm fast, I'm really inaccurate. I generally spot and correct it but the occasional one will slip through.

I blame autocorrect for errors on my phone.

The errors don't bother me too much if I can understand the meaning reasonably easily. If I can't grasp the meaning, I just ignore the post. However, text speak drives me insane. It is so lazy and often difficult to decipher.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 19/04/2017 16:30

Sorry user, I missed your point. Of course I "believe" in dyslexia. Nor would I publically draw attention to it 'I'm sat here crying I should of known he was lying" - only an absolute arse would reply with 'should HAVE' - but bad grammar does irritate me. It's like a bad smell. I know it's there and I know that the person responsible may have bowel trouble/medical issues but it's still there.

YABU. Some people genuinely can't spell, and so what? Very rarely do I find the 'wider point' is actually lost. Of course you know what 'alot' means, we all do.

I work with texts, do a lot of proofreading as part of my job, but this isn't work and I don't expect MNers to present their posts as I would a professional piece of writing. Confused

usernumbernine · 19/04/2017 16:32

So have you any idea which of the examples may or may not have been posted by someone who struggles with spelling and grammar?

Using but as a conjunctiv all the time shows lazy grammar and an inability to form more complex sentences.

Hth

Wolfiefan · 19/04/2017 16:33

I do make some errors. I'm on my phone. But there seem to be increasing number of posts that make very little sense or are littered with errors. I do find it distracting and annoying. But then I used to be a teacher!

brasty · 19/04/2017 16:33

I assume alot, is just someone who hasn't typed in a space in their haste.

usernumbernine · 19/04/2017 16:33

Ha. And of course there's a spelling error. Conjunctive.

Aeroflotgirl · 19/04/2017 16:33

Yabvvvu and quite nasty. Has it occurred to you that some people might have SN, or dyslexia, or just be in a hurry to get everything down and posted.

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 19/04/2017 16:34

user, it's like the law of the universe that any post concerning spag will result in a typo! Don't worry as I of course knew what you meant.

So did I wolfie. Metaphorical red pen I s'pose.

Aeroflotgirl · 19/04/2017 16:35

Keep your horrid opinions to yourself!

usernumbernine · 19/04/2017 16:36

Seriously. Wind your neck in. There are all kinds of people posting. If I was in distress, for example, my posts might not be coherent and well written.

Why do you care? Can't you just hide the thread and read a different one?

LouisevilleLlama · 19/04/2017 16:37

YABU and a snob in all your examples I understood the sentence

PaulAnkaTheDog · 19/04/2017 16:37

Did I really see the OP use 'alot' whilst complaining about spelling and grammar? Grin Day made.

HolditFinger · 19/04/2017 16:38

My first thought when reading the title was 'oh, this is going to go well...'

I love a good typo. Bowels in the sink made me snortle quite a lot. I think most people here get their point across well, and that's what matters. It's a forum, not an academic study.

OvO · 19/04/2017 16:38

I don't mind it. Sometimes it's just daft mistakes, sometimes it's obviously something a person struggles with and I don't think it's on to make people feel shit about it.

My only disklike is no full stops. As huge chunks are hard to read and it can be hard to work out what the post is saying when it all runs together. But that's my problem so I just click back on my browser.

Surely is but, seriously, not but seriously, ?

Lumpylumperson · 19/04/2017 16:39

This has to be a spoof thread surely?

Pinkandwhiteblossoms · 19/04/2017 16:39

Do you mean the post 'alot of posters aggree'?

It was an intentional one in response to someone else. It took me ages to do it, as well as well. My iPad hates bad grammar.

OP posts:
LouisevilleLlama · 19/04/2017 16:39

Oh, come on! Yes, phones are responsible for autocorrect - which is often bizarre and sometimes very funny, but they do not turn 'a lot' into 'alot'!

Well if you can't get what someone means due to an incorrect space then I feel that also says something about you...

Batteriesallgone · 19/04/2017 16:40

It's very difficult to pick up spag if you were never taught properly.

I struggle a lot due to my poor upbringing and schooling. I'm a lot better than I was but it slips tremendously when I'm upset. It's something I have to make a big effort with.

Posts like this upset me. I do get the bad smell analogy. But in that situation you either leave the room or find compassion surely. Not just sit there being a judgey cow.

honeyfull · 19/04/2017 16:40

You could of been a bit more carring their, but it's ok to loose your cool now and then.

Aeroflotgirl · 19/04/2017 16:41

You don't know who the person is behind, the post, so exercise a bit of humility, instead of being all pompous egocentric. A person might have learning difficulties, be in distress, have dyslexia, have other sn which coukd affect their writing. Yanbu to think it, your entitled to your thoughts, but to post a nasty thread is disgraceful!

usernumbernine · 19/04/2017 16:42

Also they could be using speech recognition software. A severely dyslexic but highly intelligent friend uses it and her documents require a lot of editing
