Aibu to think that Carole Middleton went out of her way to marry off Kate & Pippa to royalty & society millionaires?? Wills & James Matthews are hardly oil paintings, would the girls look at them twice if they worked in Tesco? Reading about Pippa's wedding tonight & it seems the sisters were both quite the social climbers in Marlborough which was encouraged by their mother? I have friends in similar circles & it seems they are very hard to break into if you are not "old money/landed gentry types" so I think Carole achieved what she set out to do! Roll on Pippa's wedding, looking forward to seeing the dress!

Sorry if I offended anyone but it was in the papers for years that Kate supposedly went to St Andrews as she knew Wills was going there & Pippa went to Edinburgh University to socialise with "like minded individuals"! When Kate & Pippa were in Marlborough they were slated for social climbing esp Pippa, Carole seems to have been the driver as most "friends & family" came out to say she was "highly ambitious" for her daughters & son to get on in society.
I asked my question as all 3 children have had highly expensive educations but none of the 3 have used their education just their connections to better themselves.....

You've been reading the tabloids and believing them, haven't you?

LouiseBrooks · 18/04/2017 23:11

Can I just point out that none of the young people involved were forced into marriage? I'm pretty sure William, after the sad example of his parents, chose the girl he wanted to marry, nobody made him, and they seem very happy.

As for social climbers, most of the English aristocracy is descended from such people.

Flyinggeese · 18/04/2017 23:11

Barbarian brilliant!

squoosh · 18/04/2017 23:14

To be honest I'm sure there are posh parents up and down the land who hope their children will marry titled toffs. They don't only send the offspring to No 1 Public School for the education alone, and I doubt they'd be cool with Rupert or Cressida marrying a secondary school teacher. I'm just not sure how much they (or Carole) would be able to engineer it.

FetchezLaVache · 18/04/2017 23:15

How do you go about "marring your children off"? I can't even get mine to change their socks.

Ceto you are right I have been reading the tabloids!! I'm flabbergasted at the cost of their educations & neither of the 3 all in their 30's has anything to show for it besides their highly connected engagements/marraiges hence my post. Again sorry for any offence caused!

So?

highinthesky · 18/04/2017 23:15

Then you have wasted a lot of money. It's not what you know, it's who you know Grin

You know OP, you have completely outed yourself with that expression 'better themselves'. THAT is at the root of all this shit. The problem lies solely in that silly mindset and concommittant class bitchiness and jealousy.

Hillfarmer · 18/04/2017 23:17

Bored or pissed?

NoYouDontKnowItAll · 18/04/2017 23:18

So glad I'm a working class republican who couldn't give a shit

gillybeanz · 18/04/2017 23:19

That's the education, no wasted money.
If you go to a public or elite school you buy friends and associates not Maths and English.
This also allows for jobs for the boys and marrying into the same class.

squoosh · 18/04/2017 23:20

NoYou for all you know your own mum is hatching your imminent nuptials to Ray Winstone or Danny Dyer...

thatdearoctopus · 18/04/2017 23:20

it was in the papers for years

Ah right. Must be true then.

user1473882712 · 18/04/2017 23:24

No jealously whatsoever Haffiana but if I spent literally hundreds of thousands of pounds on my kids education I would expect them to have jobs in their 30's. We obviously have different expectations which is ok!

I'm quite sure that there are an equal number of aristocratic parents who would be keen to see their children marry into money.

It's always been the case. Aristocracy needs new money.

I'm still not sure how such parents go about engineering it though.

I must say, I find the tone of the OP to be snide and sexist.

wobblywonderwoman · 18/04/2017 23:25

I think Kate changed uni last minute and that is a bit suss. Also Pippa is big time into the whole status thing. James is a different kettle of fish. Donna Air is from a working class background but has a false posh accent. I think Kate puts on an accent.

But the mother was trying to better them. I don't think it is a crime. It isn't a nice lifestyle to have and leave them at it.

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2017 23:25

Blimey OP

I have this mental image of you whispering all this 'gossip' to the person next to you on the bus, as you settle down with your knitting.

I'm not sure how one adult goes about 'marrying off' two other adults.

And where does their father come into this?

Or would he have been quite happy to see them married to Dave who works at Maccy Dees?

PuffinNose · 18/04/2017 23:25

😂😂😂

highinthesky · 18/04/2017 23:26

I doubt any union Pippa gets herself into is going to last forever.

Whereas Kate and Wills, I can't see them ever parting. They are clearly a loving couple, are on the same page about everything and work as a team.

honeyroar · 18/04/2017 23:26

When Kate and William met he was a teenage pin up, so I wouldn't say he's no oil painting.

I always find it strange how people blather on about the Middletons and their social climbing and how they worked to marry their daughters off. Yet posh families have been doing it for centuries and it's never mentioned (Diana Spencer and her family... Would you encourage your 19yr old to marry a man years older than her who is in love with someone else and obviously not your daughter..). The Middletons always come across as dignified and quiet, no matter how people/the media try to vilify them.

Crapuccino · 18/04/2017 23:28

Gosh this is a fascinating idea. Does it mean I can marry my DS off to Princess Charlotte if I play my cards right?? What is the precise process one goes through to achieve this exact outcome, OP. I need details, right down to how you know in advance which university said spouse-to-be is going to, the exact degree scheme they're going to take including all the modules, and then how to hack into said university's IT system to ensure my child is put into the same seminar groups and whatnot.

I await your intel with feverish excitement.

NoYouDontKnowItAll · 18/04/2017 23:29

NoYou for all you know your own mum is hatching your imminent nuptials to Ray Winstone or Danny Dyer...

I doubt it she died in 1999

Ray Winstone makes me laugh though, especially when he was the beaver in Narnia Grin

Crapuccino · 18/04/2017 23:29

It is Princess Charlotte isn't it...?

I suddenly can't remember.
