How bizarre! that he was;t found under the bed and that the first thing was school phoning to say he hadn't turned up! Would;t you notice if your child hadn't got up and had breakfast?

Sounds like she had 7 more children so may have noticed a bit later than say, someone with two.

You'd be surprised. A lot of families are quite chaotic. With 8 kids, she is perhaps more laid back too.

Yes, you would have to be quite laid back to not find a child hidden in your own home.

Also her other children are much older and mostly have moved out so I don't agree that's an excuse really.

Similar happened to a friend years ago. She had 7 and number 5 went missing. Whole caboodle out searching. . He was hiding in the wheelie bin - first week they went into use! Poor lad couldn't get out! .

I don't understand why the police didn't do a sweep of the house to check for anything untoward. Surely they should have found him under the bed?!

I can see how it happened.

My little brother went missing when he was 6. Mum scoured the house and streets for nearly an hour before calling the police.

He was asleep under an upturned washing basket. He said he'd gone under there during hide and seek and fell asleep.

He had hidden inside a compartment under the bed and piled clothing on top of himself to further hide himself

My ds w not missing for two hours at school. He was eventually found inside a locker! Worried the life out of me. The police were about to be called.

At 9 I went missing, dm thought I was out with my siblings,my siblings thought I'd gone home (one of six). Just as dm was about to call the police they found me curled up with a book under the stairs. I was so engrossed I hadn't heard anything.
I expect the child thought it funny at first and then scared he might be in trouble.

Very odd story! You'd think the mum would have done a thorough search of the house before even calling the police! And yes, why did she just "hope" that he was already at school when she noticed he was missing in the morning?

Observer, I think it's fair enough the police didn't check that right away, they'd have been more concerned he'd run away, plus can you imagine how mum would have reacted to "your son's missing? Didn't get to school? Can we check the house first?" She'd be screaming at them to look outside - understandably.

But if you were calling and calling and pulled back the drawer under the bed and still couldn't see him because he had hidden himself behind clothes, you can understand how it happened.

She musn't get up and make sure he is washed, dressed, ready for the day and has his breakfast- it is a bit of an assumption that he must have gone to school when she woke up.

He wasn't just under a bed was he?

He was determined not to got to school and had hidden himself in a drawer and covered himself.

I expect everyone was panicking and didn't think to look in somewhere that small.

Bit odd to judge someone as a chaotic parent based on not being able to find a hiding child who doesn't want to be found.

And the floor is filthy in the photos.

In fairness to the mother, it's relatively common for children who go missing to be found hiding somewhere nearby (common enough for the police to be aware that they need to search around the house and garden). Apparently they get scared to come out, especially when they hear all the fuss. So it's not really that strange a story, other than that the press covered it.

I would notice right away if one of my children didn't make it to school, because there are only two of them. If I had eight I can easily see how one might slide by under the radar on a busy morning.

The mum did search the house as did the police. There is an enquiry going on as to why the police didnt find him. There was also convincing evidence he might have gone to the river as he had told people he could see his Dads reflection in the water.

I can't help feeling that there must be something seriously wrong at school for him to go this far. It seems a very very desperate measure to take.
I hope to God I am wrong, and He was doing it out of devilment, but my instincts tell me not. However I'm not saying they're Infallible.

Not necessarily. Most kids would quite like a day off. There doesn't have to be anything seriously wrong.

It is chaotic to not see your child in the morning and just 'hope' they're at school though (assuming you're the responsible parent and they're primary aged).

I appreciate she doesn't have a choice bit to be the responsible parent. I was just foreseeing the parents coming on to say they leave their dc in bed when they go to work etc

Of course not Cauli. Perhaps he's just one of those children who for no reason hates school, and will try any and every trick in the book not to be there.

However if I was his mum I'd certainly be trying to find out if there was a deeper rooted reason as to why he was so desperate not to go to school.
