... for those who are devastated about Brexit, how are you dealing with the fear and depression and anxiety?

Has anyone got any strategies? I am genuinely not one for melodrama, but I am devastated, angry, terrified, depressed, and I feel so utterly helpless. Nothing in my lifetime has made me feel like this, and I just can't imagine feeling like this for the next two years and beyond. I can hardly bear to listen to the news, but I feel compelled to anyway. How are other remainers dealing with this, what are your coping strategies? And what, if anything, can we DO?

I don't know - I feel like you, but don't know what to do. I feel very powerless. I want to write to someone, but who I don't know. I had a brief bit of hope when Tony Blair intervened. Are we really destined to leave now, or might there be a vote after the process when we know what we have actually agreed to?

I joined a political party. It's not ideal because I've lost a lot of faith in them but I want to be a part of the solution.

Yes, I joined the LibDems. I just can't understand why May is taking such an uncompromising position on this. There was a piece in The Guardian yesterday which suggested many leave voters they interviewed were already wavering. It all feels so fucking pointless.

I really don't know, I think I'm hanging on to the fact that the vote was so narrow.... restores my faith a little bit.

I think the main impact has been that I have lost my faith in "humanity" a little bit. I struggle to see why anyone would think a united peaceful europe is a bad thing ( expecting putin obvs). Some of the ignorance and xenophobic shite that I've heard from family and neighbours has been frankly shocking....... I really didnt realise MIL for example was so anti people from Poland. Maybe its made me toughen up a bit and appreciate that people can be really nasty. I think I was a little naive before.

I am hoping that the government has some dastardly plan up its sleeve. All the talk about EU citizens being bargaining chips etc? As unpleasant a premise it is, I hope it's true.

I would be prepared to stand in front of TM right now and have her mercilessly take the piss out of me for being so fucking thick that I seriously thought she might take us out of the single market and send EU citizens home.

The premise that the Tories are snivelling, deceitful masters of spin who care more about cash than the votes of the working class is keeping me going.

Can't wait to get out. 20+ years of dealing with the corruption in the EU and how the Eurocrats squander taxpayers' money on vanity projects that benefit nobody the honours they award each other the salaries and perks far above what the average person could hope to earn. The imbalance between money leaving Britain to go to European countries, than can now be repatriated and spent in these islands.

A question for you, what is it you think you're being unreasonable about? Or did you post in the wrong forum?

I feel the same. Worried about jobs/ mortgage/ bills. Hope to God this works out. Sick of people saying things will get worse before getting better. Not everyone in a position to weather a storm.

Leaving the EU won't be disastrous. The rump UK will just be a bit poorer than it would have been. Our cultural status in the world will be a bit diminished. Our trading relationship with the EU will be controlled by what the 27 nations decide. We'll have lost the inalienable right to travel, get a job or buy a home in the EU. Scotland and NI will probably no longer be part of the country.

Not much good saving all this money if we end up spending it on customs checks and the like. And if people lose their jobs, tax takings will reduce and there will be less money so we won't be any better off.

And the trade deficit is not the same as being a net contributor to the EU (which we are). I think your link refers to the trade deficit.

remoniac IF the EU decides they don't want to trade with GB&NI, then those 27 countires can suffer the loss of monies leaving these islands and going to their state treasuries. Do you think the German car industry are going to allow that to happen? Do you know the German car industry (the ones who frig the emissions tests but don't pay British car-owners compensation 'cos we're in the EU, unlike the huge compensation payments to those in the US) refers to GB&NI as Treasure Island?

What will happen to the French dairy and wine industries, given the UK is their biggest market? No more Brits allowed in Spain on holiday after Brexit eh? That's their tourist industry given a good shafting.

No more trains from Siemens what great news for those peeps in Derby who'll have lots of extra work to look forward to; not so good for the Germans, once Frau Merkel decides Germany can't trade with the UK hmm?

And the Dutch are right up shit-creek now they can't take a quarter of English fish I suppose that's bad news for all those fisher-folk, 'cos it means......what does it mean remoniac?

What? Not one for melodrama? Confused

Look, it's an uncertain time for everyone (and I say that as someone who voted to remain).

The reason you feel helpless is because you are...we all are.

None of us are politicians. We can't control what happens next.

Therefore, we just have to carry on and hope for the best.

But inviting drama into your life over it, is not going to do you any favours.

But this is the situation we are in, now we have to deal with it, stop focusing on only the bad and try and look for the good.

Either that or we can try to take democracy away? Would you prefer to live like that?

I put more thought into walking from one room to another than has been seriously put into what this is going to do to us economically, socially, structurally and psychologically. It is a shit show from start to finish.

Nobody can be looking at this shower of idiots and truly believe we are in safe hands.

These threads always seem a bit unsavoury to me. You can go back less than 100 years to a time where people were being bombed out of their homes and they managed to deal with scary, unstable times whilst still being positive and hopeful.

I can only think we've got so used to this cosseted way of life we are just paralysed with fear about the future if any change happens. I also doubt this will be the worst thing you have to deal with in your lifetime OP sadly.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I don't know what's going to happen, but I am worried about the EU citizens I know living here. I'm also sad, I've always felt more European than British and like I'm part of a big family (which I am, I have family members scattered around from Finland to Greece) and it feels like the UK has had a teenage strop and decided to move out. "Well I don't need you lot anyway!" In the meantime the world has become very unstable and I've always thought we're better off sticking together.

I didn't vote for Brexit - I think it's a serious mistake. But I'm not too anxious about it, so long as some decent opposition to the Tories emerges soon, and that someone stands up to them. Corbyn needs to go now. I've never voted for anyone other than Labour, but I think they need a good kicking right now. I'll be voting LibDem if Corbyn is still party leader.
