To suggest you all do not watch 'All round to Mrs Brown'

I have lost count of the number of times I have seen the trailer for this, with a pixillation to cover up a swear word.

Even if you excuse the unnecessary amount of foul language, this is at best an extension of a very bad 70s sitcom with a gay character added in. If this is all the BBC can put out on a Saturday evening they have lost the plot in a way.

The worst thing of all is that previous series have attracted a large viewing audience. Go down the pub, watch another channel, play a video game or do something else. Poor viewing figures will mean it will not get a second series and the sitcom may be cancelled.

I don't like the show but I find it very easy to avoid. Donald Trump gives me the rage, Brendan O'Carroll not so much.

Jux · 26/03/2017 00:02

I've never seen it but dh saw it once and said it was v funny. I, myself, am unlikely to watch it, but hey ho, each to their own. I have no great issue with it or I'd've divorced dh Grin

Asmoto · 26/03/2017 00:06

Strangely enough, I ended up seeing a bit of this while rewinding a video (ancient tech, I know Blush ) Wasn't inspired to keep watching, though.

Flowerfae · 26/03/2017 00:15

Forgot this was on just downloaded it from iplayer, thanks for the reminder :D

haveacupoftea · 26/03/2017 07:16

Of course there's no profanities to be heard down the pub Hmm

I'll watch what i want thanks.

Oldsu · 26/03/2017 08:36

Sorry ForalltheSaints it was one of the funniest programmes I have seen in a long while had me laughing out loud.

BTW its really hypercritical to complain about profanities on a board that is well known to be the of the few (if not the only one) to not block out or report people for using profanities (and long may it continue). I can imagine what the reaction would be if you posted on another board 'To suggest you all do not read or post in Mumsnet'

Choices, we all have choices, if you don't want to hear 'fuck' on TV don't watch Mrs Brown, if you don't want to read 'fuck' on a discussion board don't read any posts on MN.

I think the "taboo in Ireland" comment may have mixed up Ireland with the 1950's.

I laughed at that too. Clearly someone who has never been. I often wonder what kind of caricature of Ireland people have in their heads.

I was born and reared in N Ireland and lived in the Irish Republic until 1989. There wasn't even divorce then in Ireland when I left - the referendum having failed. I was turfed out of my house share by the land lady for having my finance stay overnight. Not so much the 1950s.

Elendon · 26/03/2017 08:44

I watched the show last night and enjoyed it. Loved Judy Murray's mother - she was the star of the show!

LineysRun · 26/03/2017 08:50

I can't stand Brendon O'Carroll, but I'm aware that many people must find him very talented.

ElspethFlashman · 26/03/2017 08:57

Elendon with all due respect, a lot has changed in the last 28 years.

DonaldStott · 26/03/2017 08:59

I cannot bear this character. Someone previously mentioned putting it in the same category as Father Ted, Angry. No no no!!!!!!

In my experience, people who enjoy Mrs Brown, are also fans of people like Brian Conley and Bobby Davro.

I don't think I could be close friends with anyone who likes it. It would indicate I had nothing whatsoever in common with them.

Elendon · 26/03/2017 09:02

Yes, I know that. I do keep up and go back to Ireland regularly. It's very different now, but there is still an underbelly of old conservatism. Scratch the surface and you'll find it.

But I just wanted to let you know that it wasn't so much the 1950s, I wasn't born then so wouldn't know.

I didn't put the show in the same category as Father Ted. It's not even in the same league.

Elendon · 26/03/2017 09:05

You aren't missing anything. A lot of it is dire. My mum watches it and enjoys it. I sometimes watch it with her, teeth gritted, but find some of it funny, can't help myself.

I watched it last night out of curiosity, fully expecting to turn it off.

Elendon · 26/03/2017 09:07

I don't know who Brain Conley and Bobby Davro are.

EdmundCleverClogs · 26/03/2017 10:54

I don't think I could be good friends with a person who made such a huge assumption, based on one tv show Hmm. How on earth would it indicate no common interest? I love Father Ted, I'm no way a fan of Bobby Davro and Brian Conely. Hope your mind isn't too blown by that. I also manage to be friends with people who have different tastes to me, absolute shocker.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 26/03/2017 11:18

I couldn't be friends with someone who had such narrow minded views

bigbuttons · 26/03/2017 11:25

I love the sitcom but last night was crap. Mammy of the week was particularly shite.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 26/03/2017 11:30

It's not my thing, but I can't see why people are so angry that other people enjoy it. It's a tv show ffs, if you don't like it don't watch it, if you do like it, watch it. Job done!

CalmItKermitt · 26/03/2017 11:32

Blimey I don't like Mrs Brown much but I certainly wouldn't choose my friends depending on their comedy tastes!

I've seen a few clips here and there and tbh raised a smile more than I thought I would.

To use a wanky phrase - it is what it is.

Now if you want a completely unfunny, badly acted, see-the-jokes-coming-a-mile-off, predictable heap of shite, try My Family. That's so bad it actually annoys me whenever I've caught a few minutes of it.

FairytalesAreBullshit · 26/03/2017 11:34

Thanks for the reminder...

Um okay, but what taboo issues does Mrs Brown raise that Irish people are too frightened to discuss?

That was still 30 years ago!

Come on, what taboos does this drivel so bravely expose?

ForalltheSaints · 26/03/2017 11:43

There were no profanities heard in the pub last night, just some pleasant folk music. The Timothy Taylor's beer was as good as ever.

I did not expect such a heated debate on this! I'll go back to playing Mornington Crescent!
