My mother does it constantly. She will talk of the "girl" who served her at the bank.

It's a bit of a shame when we resist aging, isn't it? I mean, I would like to feel invincible again. But I'd also like to gather respect and authority as I age, sort of like men do? Call me old-fashioned....

My mum talks about 'going out with the girls' and it riles me, as it does when people my own age say it. It's not a feminist thing, I just find it very affected.

I think the subject of what collective noun or phrase one's mother uses to describe her friends is probably a subject on which the only opinion which matters is one's mother's and her friends'.
