My mother does it constantly. She will talk of the "girl" who served her at the bank.

My niece shared this video which is great

Ive noticed that grown men very rarely get called 'boys', I wonder why that is?

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2017 07:38

I am indeed a woman but 'This woman' didn't sound right.

This is exhausting. Grin

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 24/03/2017 07:41

Or 'this person'

Assuming the till you needed help with didn't require proof of fanjo.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/03/2017 07:42

loosen up, its just a term or expression, not to be taken literally! Its the same as calling, men, boys or lads, for example "were on a boys night out". Its my 40th soon, and were having a girls night out! No we are technically not girls, most are nearing our 40s, but trying to hang on to your youth Wink. When referring to the server at the supermarket, or the post office worker, refer to them as ladies or the proper name.

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2017 07:43

I don't think anyone would say 'This person' that sounds wrong too. To me anyway.

As no one on here is citing sources, can I add that the use of 'lads' or 'boys' strikes me as a regional thing, with the latter more common in the SE of England?

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2017 07:45

To me 'This woman' doesn't sound right. Others may be alright with it. That's fine.

It's all opinion.

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 24/03/2017 07:47

Does 'this woman' sound rude or derogatory to you?

BartholinsSister · 24/03/2017 07:47

I wonder if the Spice Women will ever reform? Or the Beach Men?

AuntieStella · 24/03/2017 07:47

I think there's a big difference between what you might say - amongst a known group of friends - and what you publish online.

One should always use the terms accepted as neutral (unmarked) for the latter terms for the latter (including on MN) just as basic politeness.

After all, lots of people in RL call me (insert a term I find affectionate based on my ancestry) but I'd be seriously pissed off if they did that in a published post here.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/03/2017 07:48

bartholins just doesn't sound right somehow.

Doyouwantabrew · 24/03/2017 07:48

I support it's all about context.

I say I am meeting 'the girls' we are all 40/50+ Grin

However in s work environment it's inappropriate especially from a manager.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 24/03/2017 07:48

I think there is an argument that all gender specific language is unnecessary but boy would that need a culture change...!

NormaSmuff · 24/03/2017 07:50

my colleague does this regarding the rest of us, but how can I stop her, lead by example, but she aint gonna change

Increasinglymiddleaged · 24/03/2017 07:50

And I agree it sounds odd sparkling but is that just because people don't say it so we aren't used to it?

FFTransform · 24/03/2017 07:52

The only time I hear boy for a grown man (outside of the wonder bra advert!) is in the depictions of slavery . .

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 24/03/2017 07:52

Looking at the origins of the word, it looks like a human female actually becomes a woman when married Shock

So unless you want to assume people's marital status I think you're fairly buggered with referring to someone as a woman too Grin

wictional · 24/03/2017 07:54

Mid 20s here, and getting called a woman makes me feel matronly Grin

Getting called "one of the café girls" doesn't bother me.

user1489261248 · 24/03/2017 07:54

YABU (IMO.) I don't mind being called a girl, though I haven't been for a few years!!!

But I guess you are entitled to your own views.

Personally, I hate being called 'MATE' especially by a man. IME, men call a woman 'mate' to let her know he is not interested in her romantically. So if a man calls me 'mate' I just think 'fuck you I don't like you anyway LOL!'

Increasinglymiddleaged · 24/03/2017 07:54

Interesting you learn something every day. I always assumed that the 'wom' bit was short for womb Grin

Increasinglymiddleaged · 24/03/2017 07:55

I hate being called 'hun'

Sparklingbrook · 24/03/2017 07:56

When I ring home I often ask DH how the boys are meaning my DC. They are 17 and 15. I wonder at what age I will have to stop.Shock

Really? You've never heard of A Boys Night Out, The Boys in Blue, Boys From the BlackStuff etc.?
