To feed the vegan child cheese

NC for this to not out myself. DS 8 has a friend coming round for tea next week. The mother has stressed very heavily that he is vegan, can't touch any dairy or meat as it will make him very unwell. However ds says his favourite food is normal cheese and cheesy pizza. Apparently he has it all the time when away from his DM.

Who do I follow? I've looked in asda and could only find one vegan cheese, it didn't look like the pizza kind - more a spreadable cream cheese thing.

the mother. and of course you shouldn't feed him something, i would go off mums word not that of an 8 year old who's probably desperate for the chance of real cheese.
not your job to give it him.

NoCapes · 17/03/2017 20:02

Shock of course you listen to the Mum!

mickeysminnie · 17/03/2017 20:02

yes, you would be VERY unreasonable! Why not just ask his mum what he will eat and where to get it!

SerialReJoiner · 17/03/2017 20:02

I wouldn't risk it.

I agree with others - go with the mother.

Poor child.

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 17/03/2017 20:04

Obviously go with the mother. Why does he have to have cheese, vegan or otherwise, if he's only with you a few hours? Beans on toast (dairy free spread) or pasta with a simple tomato sauce would be plenty.

Makinglists · 17/03/2017 20:04

If mum says it makes him ill then I would assume a dairy allergy and no cheese.

If they as a family choose to follow a vegan diet for ethical reasons I would offer vegan food but if the child asked to eat something non-vegan I think that at 8 ( if I'm right in that assumption) they should have a choice
to try something non-vegan.

I think you need to know a bit more about the circumstances.

BillSykesDog · 17/03/2017 20:05

Holland and Barratt normally have some vegan stuff in that can be bunged in the oven.

Poor kid having this forced on him if true.

cheesyinkent · 17/03/2017 20:05

I know you are all right. I just feel sad for the child, now I'm worried that it was the main reason he wanted to come for dinner and ds has been saying we'll have pizza :(

arethereanyleftatall · 17/03/2017 20:06

No point risking it. Just do beans on (dry) toast.

Badgerbird · 17/03/2017 20:06

You can easily buy pizza bases or pitta breads and they top them (or you) and use any gratable vegan cheese to top his with. Easy to find in Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose or sainsburies (typical none in Asda!) Or a super easy tomato pasta. Or jacket spud and beans. Would go on what his mum says and it's pretty straight forward stuff to be fair :)

BillSykesDog · 17/03/2017 20:07

Not necessarily an allergy. A lot of vegans/vegetarians claim that they become violently ill from consuming animal products/meat.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 17/03/2017 20:08

Make vegan pizza! Pizza with bbq sauce or home made tomato sauce with shed loads of garlic, piles of toppings and no cheese is actually quite nice.

Ta1kinPeace · 17/03/2017 20:08

Go with the mum - he's 8 : she could have an underlying reason
once the kid goes to secondary he'll make his own choices
at which point you follow those

Iamastonished · 17/03/2017 20:08

Go to Morrisons or Asda and get some pizzas made up. You can make one of them completely vegan.

IamFriedSpam · 17/03/2017 20:09

Definitely don't risk it, do baked potatoes, beans and veg - then the rest of you can have butter and cheese etc. if you want.

BillSykesDog · 17/03/2017 20:09

Holland and Barrett def do a ready made frozen one.

AlbusPercival · 17/03/2017 20:09

Vegan pizza is easy to make.

Ready made bases are vegan. Add tomato purée aby veggies abd vegan cheese.

Just be aware it doesn't brown

I really don't like the idea of one person having a special meal. I'll try Holland and Barrett tomorrow and do a test run, cheese not growing does sound a bit grim though!

BTW I used to make a stonking vegan pizza - it was always gone before the vegans dragged themselves out of the pub ....

Base of your own making
tomato puree
herbs
fine sliced onion, pepper, mushroom
pieces of lidl grilled aubergine and sprinklings of herbs
just yummy

SparklyUnicornPoo · 17/03/2017 20:13

you have to feed them what the mother says to. I have a child in my class who is allergic to dairy, she swears blind she loves cheese and often has vegan cheese/home made vegan pizza in her lunchbox, so other children wouldn't necessarily know, but she convinced another child to share their normal cheese one lunchtime and i have never seen so much vomit!
