Husbands ex has stolen baby name

Deedee3311 · 14/03/2017 19:10

his ex who he already has a son with who has just had a baby has actually stolen the name we were going to use. We are on amicable terms and she knew what name we had chosen, now she has robbed it. We call the baby by this name and it is THE name we want, but his son can't have two sisters called the same thing can he?! Livid.

Of course he can have two sisters with the same name. Both of my nan's step-sisters had the same name. But the question is why would you (unless it's to honour a friend or family member)? I personally would want my daughter to have a unique name.

neonrainbow · 14/03/2017 19:13

No he can't. You don't own the name, there's millions out there, pick another one.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 14/03/2017 19:14

What's the name?

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 14/03/2017 19:14

My friends son has 2 half sisters who are the equivalents of Isobel and Isabella and only 5 months apart in age
Dickheaddaddy got his wife and his girlfriend pregnant 🙄

Deedee3311 · 14/03/2017 19:14

I just hope she hasn't stolen the middle name as well.

we have so many John's in our family... we have to use surnames to confirm which one your talking about lol .. you call your Baby whatever you wish x

PurpleDaisies · 14/03/2017 19:15

Why shouldn't she use a name she likes? She doesn't own you anything.

You're being completely unreasonable.

SweetBabyJebus · 14/03/2017 19:19

Why don't you switch the first and middle names then? I presume you also like the middle name... Very annoying though. I understand how put out you must feel. Baby names can get quite emotive within family / close friend circles.

Floralnomad · 14/03/2017 19:19

Get a grip , you can't steal a name, nobody owns them .

Flambola · 14/03/2017 19:20

My DH has two Charlotte's (half sisters). I also have a Charlotte.

Flambola · 14/03/2017 19:21

Half sisters to him not each other!

debbs77 · 14/03/2017 19:23

I'd be fuming! She knew! And bloody stole it! I'd use it anyway. Bitch! Seriously, I'm annoyed on your behalf

janniedodger · 14/03/2017 19:24

Oh dear, stolen/robbed a name..is that actually possible? You have told someone of your intention to name a child x and they have chosen to use it, no theft involved!

Pencilvester · 14/03/2017 19:25

YABU (especially if it's a really popular name).

It might seem weird at first but you'll get used to it!

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 14/03/2017 19:26

Reason why nobody should tell anyone their chosen name. .

ApocalypseNowt · 14/03/2017 19:26

I'm usually in the 'you don't own a name camp' but c'mon....she knew the name...it's a bit shitty. She could've mentioned beforehand that she liked it/was thinking of it too.

What's the name OP?

user1483387154 · 14/03/2017 19:26

They have every right to choose the name they want for their child.

ApocalypseNowt · 14/03/2017 19:26

Reason why nobody should tell anyone their chosen name

^totally agree

I can completely understand why you would be upset . It is a very MN thing to say you don't own a name however if you told her the name you were using and she said nothing I would be livid too. . Personally no I wouldn't want to use it in that situation..

I would also be very more thoughtful what you do let her know.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/03/2017 19:28

Never ever ever tell anyone your baby name. I was robbed by my best friend.

happypoobum · 14/03/2017 19:30

You don't own the name so are being rather ridiculous banding around accusations of the ex stealing it.

Are you sure she had understood what you were going to call the baby? People tell me these things and it goes in one ear and out the other to be honest, she might not have remembered.

Even if she did know, she obviously loves the name, and there is fuck all you can do about it. Either call your baby the name you originally planned, or call her something else with good grace. Don't make a holy show of yourself over this.

pinkdonkey · 14/03/2017 19:31

I knew 2 full sisters both christened Maria (and on b.c.) but one called by middle name day to day. Apparently done due to family politics!

zznotxy · 14/03/2017 19:32

Eh, why did you tell anyone ?? Opened yourself up the this. Not good all around so sympathise

Molehillfromamountain · 14/03/2017 19:32

If you love it why not use it too, my mum has the same name as her sister when shortened, think Anna and Annabel both shorten to Ann. It's not that weird IMO.
