To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't think Ruth Davidson wants Scottish Independence themueslicamel

If the rest of the UK has a claim on some of the oil and gas revenues as the UK collectively invested in the industry, surely Scotland must also have a claim on any other bit of UK infrastructure that it contributed to as a member of the UK?

ny20005 · 13/03/2017 19:07

Puzzled - oil & gas belongs to Scotland if we vote to go to leave UK or are you suggesting that Scotland would be entitled to our share of what we've contributed to as part of UK ???

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/03/2017 19:09

Scotland must also have a claim on any other bit of UK infrastructure that it contributed to as a member of the UK?

Yes it does, and not just infrastructure. But it would also need to accept it's share of the UKs debt.

TSSDNCOP · 13/03/2017 19:10

But you can just keep having referendum after referendum until you get the result you want. If you don't want a yes/no result you have to think a bit more carefully about how you rig want the outcome to look.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/03/2017 19:12

Yes, you can. If the population doesn't approve of this they will vote out the government that keeps doing it. If they do approve they won't. Democracy.

Toadinthehole · 13/03/2017 19:16

There are different rules for different things.

The rule regarding natural resources is that they belong to the state they're in. So Scotland would get the oil in its waters.

Regarding other assets, the rule is that a newly created state (as Scotland would be) doesn't get them unless they're part of its land. So no UK investments, but also no UK liabilities either.

An interesting historical footnote: when Ireland became independent it refused to take on a proportionate amount of UK debt. In response the UK prevented it from entering a number of international bodies for some decades.

Emphasise · 13/03/2017 19:16

Personally I think it's all down to egos. None of the leaders want to go down in history as the one who "lost" Scotland, even though there's no compelling reason to keep her.

Oldbutstillgotit · 13/03/2017 19:17

Sturgeon and co speak for the SNP not Scotland and need to get on with the day job rather than obsessing about independence. I voted no first time and will vote no this time.

Toadinthehole · 13/03/2017 19:18

Its not democracy to re-run referenda until you get the result you want. That's political opportunism.

If Sturgeon was really concerned about the people's will she'd wait to see how Brexit turned out. Instead she's gone for sabotage.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/03/2017 19:20

If Sturgeon was really concerned about the people's will she'd wait to see how Brexit turned out

Eh? She is. The referendum will be timed to be after negotiations are concluded and are being voted on in WM, but before we leave the EU with rUK.

Whisky2014 · 13/03/2017 19:20

Renewable energy is the way forward. We are net contributors OP so can you show me why you think we are not?
Can you also point out why we should stay because we were told if we voted to stay as a union we wouldn't leave the EU. This was an out and out lie. As was The Vow that David Cameron spouted off after a poll revealed we were verging on voting to leave. That Vow could have been shredded as they wrote it.

feellikeanalien · 13/03/2017 19:22

So will Scots living in England get a vote this time? I doubt it.

What happens then to all the Scots currently living in England if the vote is to leave the U.K?

I'm Scottish, DP is English and we live in Northern England. Will I need a residence permit to live here? I can't see how it will work in practice.

Whisky2014 · 13/03/2017 19:23

Toad but the thing is, we voted based on lies and a promise we would remain in EU. Since that is clearly not happening is it not right we are asked again what we would like to do? Put yourself in our shoes..what would you think is the right thing to do bearing in mind all the facts of what's happened? You don't think we should have another vote after a serious change that we absolutely did not want to happen, happened?

dingit · 13/03/2017 19:23

Dh said it's time we start building a wall, oh wait, we did. 😁

glitter89owl · 13/03/2017 19:23

Well if Brexit is anything to go by England is intent on isolating itself anyway. Many Scottish people want independence because the country naturally leans to the left and for the past 7 years we've had a

glitter89owl · 13/03/2017 19:25

Sorry wasn't finished:

*a Coservative government we didn't vote for, and an EU exit the majority didn't vote for either.

PiratePete1 · 13/03/2017 19:25

It's a pity the rest of the uk can't vote for whether we want Scotland or not. I know which way I'd vote!

TSSDNCOP · 13/03/2017 19:26

Itsall genius, we can expect a generational referendum to actually mean every parliamentary term.

glitter89owl · 13/03/2017 19:27

Many scottish voters don't agree with all SNP policies, in my belief it is a single issue vote and if Scotland were to become independent the first election post-referendum would see

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/03/2017 19:27

So will Scots living in England get a vote this time? I doubt it

Surely it is fair that the people who actually live in the country should get the vote, plus of course, how do you define "Scottish"?

What happens then to all the Scots currently living in England if the vote is to leave the U.K?

I think last time round things like dual citizenship were mentioned.

user1481215005 · 13/03/2017 19:28

SNP have 56 out if 59 MPs so have a very clear majority from the Scottish people but are over ruled by Tory & labour every time

Sorry ny20005 what's the point. Scotland has MPs proportional to its population? When you guys used to vote labour often you were the securing vote for a labour government? You can't have more votes than anyone else. And instead you have Scottish parliament which at least give you your own voice there. England doesn't have an English parliament which means laws for just us are voted on by snps as well even when it does not concern them.

If that's what voters want...

Toadinthehole · 13/03/2017 19:30

itsall

Brexit is when the UK actually leaves, not then it decides to.

Scotland has to apply for entry anyway, so there's no reason to have the referendum note except political ones.

whisky

There was no lie.

glitter89owl · 13/03/2017 19:30

Aghhh stupid phone!

*see a left-leaning party elected into the Scottish parliament. NS has thought quite clearly about the timing of the vote - a result in spring 2019 would give the SNP two years to complete the process. I think people mistake the Scottish want for independence as being something based on nationalism, while that might be the agenda of the SNP many people I speak with want better and fairer representation in government, not a sense of pride in their country.
