To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

The material change argument is totally flawed due to the fact that NS conflated a Brexit vote with a second indyref. What's done is done, but I don't think there is a mandate purely because the Scottish vote was so skewed. If the SNP had not made any claims for another Indyref based on the outcome of the EU referendum, the results would have probably been a lot closer to the rest of the UK's results. I will keep on bringing this up because I think it's really important.

Scotland had a vote on Brexit and it was surprising to see how similar they were to certain parts if the rest of the U.K. The two votes were conducted separately, and some will have voted to leave the EU and become independent.

Again, Scotland is not one voice.

Thegruffalowswife · 20/03/2017 09:52

social attitudes survey- guardian article-Just over 40% of Scots believe that we should stay within the EU but try to reduce its powers, compared with 39% in England and Wales.

How exactly do 49% of scots think they will reduce it's powers when we will be such a tiny contributor with hardly any represent at ion within......if we eventually miraculously are able to join with such a massive deficit.

Thegruffalowswife · 20/03/2017 09:53

Sorry 40%

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 20/03/2017 09:54

Saor at one point you thought it added something to the debate to point out a typo in a username yes I did which was childish and I said I shouldn't have before.

Hearts? I've made no such statement.

Thegruffalowswife · 20/03/2017 09:55

Ns is playing a very dirty game and someone needs to call her out.

I haven't read the full thread, but I just wanted to say that I disagree with the premise of your question. You ask why England wants to 'keep' Scotland, as though Scotland is a pet or a possession of the English that is becoming more trouble than it's worth. We are all partners in the UK and we benefit from pooled resources, including talent; while Scotland is currently receiving more from the UK than it is paying in, for many years we contributed more than we got - this is how it works when nations are in partnership across one country. This misconception, on both sides of the border, only fuels the kind of resentment and distrust that the SNP have been doing their best to stoke in recent years, and for all our sakes we need to point this out at every opportunity.

We have huge potential in this country to contribute to the UK as a whole and to provide our own people with great opportunities. I am of the opinion that our parliament has tremendous power to do this already, we just need a better Scottish government, and that there is no need and no desire to take the drastic step of cutting ourselves off from the UK. What is needed is a strong political party on the centre ground of politics who can work to unite the massive divisions in Scotland, not independence at any cost, which will lead to even more resentment and division and decades of poverty for Scots.

Headofthehive55 · 20/03/2017 09:59

There was a move in recent years for students to flock to nursing degrees - no fees, but you still get a degree that can be used for anything. You don't have to go into nursing afterwards.

I'm not surprised that registrations from the EU are down. It's difficult to transfer your registration - as I said earlier. Separated countries makes it all the more difficult to gain training and experience around all of the U.K.

Headofthehive55 · 20/03/2017 10:01

I would like to see Westminster sit in the Scotland and Wales and NI. Rotate.

Headofthehive55 · 20/03/2017 10:03

Absolutely you. We benefit hugely from Scotland involvement in the Union, and hopefully The rest of the U.K. Brings benefits to Scotland.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/03/2017 10:24

the hideous fact is that we did not colonise Scotland scotlan joined us after finding themselves flat broke after the darien scheme when they had failed attempts at colonising other places

Well done, gruffalow, for reminding us all of this often (conveniently?) ignored point

Thank you, too, for pointing out the issues around Arthur Donaldson; I wasn't aware of these, but I am now

LagunaBubbles · 20/03/2017 10:42

you don't seem to be understanding that not everyone who voted SNP (who could not manage to get a majority on their own) and Green voted them in on a pro-indy platform. There are many reasons people voted SNP and Green, not all of them to do with independence- perhaps because they felt their local candidate would do the best job for their local community

Oh I understand fine thanks. It doesnt really matter WHY people voted for the SNP does it - they are still voting for a party with a mandate for independence. Anyone who really is against this is a bit foolish then voting for them, no matter how good a local candidate is.

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 20/03/2017 10:48

And yet many do..

LagunaBubbles · 20/03/2017 10:50

Err ... since the SNP no longer has an overall majority, I thought many people already had?

Nope, the system was never set up in a way for one party to have an overall majority.

Headofthehive55 · 20/03/2017 11:16

The system is set up so that the snp could have a majority. It just doesn't.

Nyx · 20/03/2017 11:25

Grin Head you are so funny

squishysquirmy · 20/03/2017 11:34

"despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back"
....So does England, and Wales, and Northern Ireland.
That's what is meant by the term "deficit".

AndHoldTheBun · 20/03/2017 11:40

Gruffalo, some of your posts on this thread (and others) are deeply unpleasant. Ad hominem attacks on NS, calling into question her sanity and so on, it's unnecessary and offensive.

Why not try keeping a civil tongue in your head? You are winning nobody's heart or mind that way.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/03/2017 11:51

Gruffalo, some of your posts on this thread (and others)

Tbf to Gruffalow it hasn't been a one way Street and another poster has had some fairly nasty posts deleted also.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/03/2017 11:52

If anyone's interested it's just been announced the TM will trigger Brexit next Wednesday ...

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 20/03/2017 11:55

I think it's a shame to delete. Let it be heard.

Headofthehive55 · 20/03/2017 11:56

nyx I find your comment condescending and rude.

Nyx · 20/03/2017 11:59

I see Tim Fallon wants another Brexit vote and is demanding the SNP back him up. While simultaneously insulting them (shocker)

Nyx · 20/03/2017 12:00

Farron rather - typo

Nyx · 20/03/2017 12:01

Sorry head, I thought you were joking Shock
