To get toddler DD's hair cut into a pixie?

Is it mean? To make her look like a little boy? She hates her hair being done and there are some really lovely pixie cuts that would work. I have a DS (who was once a toddler!) and his haircut would work on her...

These are pictures that I got by googling children's pixi cut, not personal ones, so these are out there in public.

Rinceoir · 12/03/2017 16:44

Of course YANBU. I would cut my DDs if she had straight hair as I think bobs/pixies are lovely on toddlers, but I with curls we would probably end up with awful frizz. Her hair is only recently long enough to tie back and she has become very opinionated about wanting plaits so is suddenly happy to have hair done (she's almost 3).

Does anyone have any advice for managing curly hair in small children? My hair is naturally really straight so am not used to curls!

Aeroflotgirl · 12/03/2017 17:03

My daughter has curly hair, and even though I brush it, still looks unruly. Its the type of curly hair that looks messy, not the nice corkscrew type curls. I just don't know what to do with it, I just have it cut into a bob, as due to her Autism she hates her hair and head being touched, and won't even touch it herself. Growing and putting it up is a definite no no as she hates hairbands, alice bands any decoration in her hair.

Rinceoir · 12/03/2017 17:42

Sounds similar to my DDs, but I wonder if it's more that I'm treating it like my straight hair. She's very good about letting me brush it but it gets frizzier as I brush it, but if I don't it ends up tangled and matted.

CruCru · 12/03/2017 19:33

If your child has very curly hair, have you considered taking her to a hairdresser that specialises in afro hair? They would probably know what to do to keep it in good condition.

Lovetunnocks · 12/03/2017 19:36

God yes, do it. Long hair is boringly ubiquitous. Did you get her agreement to have long hair? If not, why do you need it for short?

AYankinSpanx · 12/03/2017 19:58

For frizzy curls, try just washing with silicone-free conditioner instead of shampoo. You can massage the scalp like usual; most kids don't need endless shampooing anyway - they're not using styling products etc. and with curls, the gentler the better.

You could also try massaging a tiny bit of avocado oil into the ends.

Works for us anyway!

My 2 year old DD has an incredibly short pixie cut because her hair is naturally wirey & permanently one big knot regardless of whatever we use.

She gets nothing but compliments on how stunning her face shape is and how strong her eyes are.

Absolutely go for it. We can now swim & spend more time playing than negotiating the hair situationSmile

noeffingidea · 12/03/2017 20:04

No, it isn't mean, no she won't look like a boy (and what if she did?)
Go ahead, OP. Having short hair feels really free (going to book an appointment for my daughter and me).

Krapom · 12/03/2017 20:07

My mum kept my hair short when I was little. She's a darling, but I hated being taken for a boy all the time. Whilst there is nothing wrong with looking like a boy; equally there is nothing wrong with looking like a girl. Girls are ace.

TasLondon · 12/03/2017 20:15

Good point, lovetunnock.

OP, I'd say don't worry about your DD looking like a boy, she will still look like your DD and she'll be gorgeous.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 12/03/2017 20:16

Do it. I'm all for, kids deciding what they do with their hair - but when they're old enough to look after it themselves, or be agreeable to having help getting it tidy.

I loved the pic of Boris Johnson's family. I had short hair as a child and had the same bowl cut as my brother! Unfortunately it's put me off having short hair now as I'm worried it will look the same!

watermelongun · 12/03/2017 20:47

Lop it off! Some BONKERS and majorly outdated / misogynist attitudes on this thread! My youngest DS is 2.5 and has long hair - it's so ginger and bonkers and wild and suits him. You get the odd person who'll refer to him as she. But here's the magic thing - you say, ah no, he's a boy. And that's that issue cleared up! It's not like it's soooooo terrible to be mistaken for the opposite sex! He couldn't give two shits about his hair.

My DD had really short hair until she was about 4, because it took that long to grow! She had a very cute short style while it grew though, but shorter in the back and a fringe - made her look quite French for some reason Grin she never got mistaken for a boy. And if she did? Who gives a fuck! They don't really 'see' gender until they're about 5ish do they?

If it's practical for you and your DD do it. She'll look lush anyway, because toddlers are just cute no matter what they wear / haircuts they have.

StarryIllusion · 12/03/2017 21:10

Do it. I would. Probably will if my DD starts creating about having her hair brushed. As for those who are saying you will regret it and it will take years to grow back: wtf are you doing to your hair? Mine wouldn't take years to grow back, it's done a good 4 inches in 3 months ffs. DS's hair is ridiculous too, it grows like crazy.

Madeyemoodysmum · 12/03/2017 23:03

I think it will look super cute

So even after brushing it looks like this

Rinceoir · 13/03/2017 07:43

Aero that's exactly what my DDs hair is like. I love her curls but I'm really bad at managing them.

notMarlene · 13/03/2017 07:45

It's the brushing that's making it 'explode' though, Aero. Curly hair really shouldn't be brushed when dry. Try looking up the Curly Girl method, and/or maybe just have it cut shorter until she's older.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 13/03/2017 07:50

Friends of ours had their dd's hair cut sooo short once. She was 3. It was shorter than my sons. She looked like a boy. And there's nothing wrong with looking like a boy, but she definitely is a girly girl so i can't imagine she would have been pleased to be mistaken for one.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/03/2017 08:02

Thanks very much notMarlene, i try to use frizz ease when brushing it. I am shocked at the outdated attitudes on short hair here. Long hair can look bad and washed out, if you don't have the right hair type or look after it properly. It can also be very ageing.

AYankinSpanx · 13/03/2017 11:34

Aero I used Frizz Ease for years and then realised that the silicones in it had started to actually make my hair frizzy through using it so much (it's a thing apparently). I totally detoxed my hair after that and just switched to oils etc. and it's much more defined and smooth - far fewer knots too.

That's grown up hair though! Your DD's hair is so pretty!

Aeroflotgirl · 13/03/2017 11:57

Thanks AYankin, even in a bob, it does not sit flat, it has a wave, the longer it is the messier it looks, and it curls upwards.

TimeLoop · 13/03/2017 12:02

My little girl has recently got her hair cut short! I think it looks beautiful! She doesn't particularly enjoy 'girly' things either, but still doesn't get mistaken as a boy and I think she looks very much like a girl!!

I don't mind this pic being up as hairdresser used it anyway

My dd is the same age and also pulls out hair bands. We use hair slides to keep it out of her face.
