To get toddler DD's hair cut into a pixie?

Is it mean? To make her look like a little boy? She hates her hair being done and there are some really lovely pixie cuts that would work. I have a DS (who was once a toddler!) and his haircut would work on her...

Depends on the quality of the hair. I was actively discouraged from anything pixie-like or shoulder length by the hairdresser as DD has some really thick and unruly hair, very similar to mine actually, so I could understand the objections.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/03/2017 12:25

Time, so beautiful, and a lovely hair cut too, you can have really nice short girly styles, team it with slides or an Alice band, looks really nice. Gone are the days of the two short hairstyles (basin or short back and sides for girls), there is some fantastic variety in girls hairstyles today.

Soubriquet · 13/03/2017 12:28

Oh Time your dd looks absoutely adorable

ToastVacuum · 13/03/2017 12:30

Of course it's fine!

It was nearly 100 years ago, back in the 1920s when women started getting bob haircuts to symbolise increased liberation after Victorian/Edwardian times. Short hair in girls/women was accepted from then on. I don't remember 100 years ago (!) but in the 70s and 80s, girls had various haircuts, some long, some short, some medium. Long hair for boys wasn't unusual also. There were baby/child clothes in every colour of the rainbow, not just pink and blue.

Pink clothes and long hair are absolutely fine, but equally so are other colours and hairstyles, and should not lead to anyone saying a girl "looks like a boy".

TimeLoop · 13/03/2017 12:31

Thank you both Smile she loves it and it's sooo much easier to look after

NotCitrus · 13/03/2017 12:31

My preschool dd loved her pixie cut - I basically asked for a small Emma Watson and got one, but it did take the senior stylist to make it look good.

She's got a bob now. Still loves trousers and won't wear skirts, but will choose non-blue/superhero clothes so mostly people realise she's a girl. She's very unbothered by people thinking she's a boy anyway.

Eolian · 13/03/2017 12:37

Do it, OP. Ignore the princessy types who thing girls must have long hair. My dd is 11 and has had short hair since a couple of years ago. She had wanted to have it cropped for quite a while but I hesitated to let her because I worried that she wouldn't like it once she'd had it done. I was wrong - she loves it and says she never wants it long again. Sometimes people do mistake her for a boy at first glance, but so what? If that bothered her, she'd grow it.

Your dd is too young to have a real preference. If she doesn't likeit when she's old enough to know, she can grow it.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/03/2017 12:40

This is the front of dd. Looks permenently shaggy. Due to her ASD and sensory issues, hates it being g touched. I have to spray with tangle spray, and quickly run the tangle teaser through it. Whilst holding her down with one hand.

I just got my daughter's cut into a bob and she looks lovely. I did not like her long thin rat tail hair. No matter how much she combed it and washed it it always looked messy within the hour.

Now I'm trying to convince my 8 year old who has hair down to her bottom to cuts hers off. Or at least some of it.

I am not a fan of long hair on little girls unless it's in really good condition and not thin and whispy at the ends which most little girls is.

My boys had long ish curly hair and it looked lovely because the curls were gorgeous and the hair was thick.

RainbowChasing · 13/03/2017 13:01

Oh my goodness. So many remarks saying it's mean and that she'll look like a boy. What on earth?!? It's a pixie haircut not a skinhead. Little girls look lovely with short hair.

ToastVacuum · 13/03/2017 13:19

A girl with short hair doesn't "look like a boy", she looks like a girl with short hair (yes, even if it's a skinhead cut!)

Otherwise, what does a girl with short hair look like? Some people appear to think this isn't a possible description of someone Confused

PickledCauliflower · 13/03/2017 13:24

I think pixie cuts look great on little girls and easy to manage. Hair grows fast, so if they don't like it then let it grow out.
I love pixie cuts full stop, but find they look better on some adults than others. I think they always look great on kids.

PickledCauliflower · 13/03/2017 13:28

When I see small children with very long hair, i imagine the horrors of washing and detangling etc.
Probably easier nowadays, with leave in conditioners and the like but it brings back memories of my childhood long hair. My parents would not let me cut it - it would be aggresively brushed and conditioner was never mentioned.
And then tied up with elastic bands 😳

notMarlene · 13/03/2017 13:30

TBH aero, I think it looks fine!

It could be more curly/less fluffy with different treatment but considering she hates having it touched it'd make sense to have it cut short. Properly short. That way if wouldn't need anything at all doing to it between washes.

Do you think she'd accept a crop?

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 13/03/2017 13:32

Just try it out op it's only hair. It grows back if you don't like it. I'm a hairdresser and it's becoming more of a thing now. There's a few families where the boys have a shaggy but we'll kept longer style and the girls have shorter pixies. See if you can find someone to come to you (maybe do your hair and then hers as an "afterthought"?)
Build up a rapport so she gets used to getting it trimmed (which you should do every 6-8 weeks to keep it looking neat and tidy.

notMarlene · 13/03/2017 13:37

This little lass looks like she has a similar hair type to your DD Aero. I was thinking of shorter still really, so this would the ready for a haircut length.

It probably be better for both of you b

Thanks notMarlene that looks like a lovely style, I was thinking a shorter hair for her, she has had that hairstyle every since she was 4, and she is 10 now. Her cousin has thick hair down to her bum, and I do envy her, but she has a different hair type to my daughter, and she doesen't have Autism. Her cousin loves taking care of her hair unlike dd.

AbernathysFringe · 13/03/2017 14:19

I love love love little girls having pixie hair cuts. Literally makes them look like a fairy!

MoonriseKingdom · 13/03/2017 16:24

Loving all the pixie cuts posted. Time - your daughter really suits that cut.

ArseyTussle · 13/03/2017 16:27

Aero, your DD looks really cool, I love her top and that shaggy fringe bob is ace! I like the messiness of it, gives it texture.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 13/03/2017 16:52

My hair was really long as a kid- got down to waist length. Unfortunately, I hated having it brushed or washed and the amount of screaming during either of those activities was insane. Eventually at 16 I got it cut to shoulder length and I loved it. So much easier to care for and it brought out the natural waves in my hair.

I've long since grown it back out but I'd get it cut back like that in a heartbeat. I forgot how much of a pain long hair is to look after- you need to brush it at least twice a day or it tangles as soon as you look at it!!

My cousin has hers cut very short like some of the pictures on this thread and it suits her. No need for long hair unless you can look after it.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/03/2017 18:14

Thanks Arsey, it was at her 10th birthday meal at the weekend. That top outfit was bought by her grandparents from Monsoon. She looks quite bohemian Grin

NotYoda · 13/03/2017 18:49

Time

That's a beautiful cut

Aeroflot

You DD's hair is ace. Not that it matters, but the style at the moment is really fashionable. But I know what it's like dealing with thick, wavy hair - everyone in my family has it. It's only a few days from out of control at any one time. After years of crap barbers who can't deal with my DSs' hair, they've both got shorter and shorter (they are teen boys and won't set foot in a Unisex salon). At least you should be able to find a hairdresser who can do cunning things with it.

Acornantics · 13/03/2017 18:59

She won't look like a boy, she'll look like herself, with short hair. I think girls with short hair look v cute! If you're not sure, why not try a bob and go shorter if you want?

She's still so young, if it makes her and your lives easier, why not?
