To have cried in the pub toilet

Because a man I don't know at the bar said "oh wow, you look just like Bridget Jones!"?

I'm 28 and not that it matters a size 8. I've had a hugely difficult week and felt quite confident today and now I feel crushed and stupid and fat and disgusting.

I recently told a new acquaintance she looks like Kirsty allsopp. She has parents from Sri Lanka and is about a size 8, but she still has very similar facial features to Kirsty allsopp and actually said other people have said the same. What I'm saying is that just because you remind someone of someone else doesn't mean you share all of their physical features!

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 11/03/2017 16:41

I once knew someone who was told on two separate occasions that she looked like Deirdre Barlow. She was about 25 at the time.
People are dim, they say all sorts. You've had a shit week, be kind to yourself and try not to take it to heart Flowers

diddl · 11/03/2017 16:42

"I think I always saw her as the archetypal overweight, chain smoking pathetic, needy spinster. "

Wasn't that how she saw herself rather than how she was?

Mamagin · 11/03/2017 16:43

I have been compared to Marty Feldman (Google him, children) and Kate Bush, when we were both in our twenties. Obviously I am still much more like Kate.
You have had a shit, shit week, but a lucky escape, and you must look gorgeous for a random stranger to say that you look like Bridget.

roarityroar · 11/03/2017 16:43

Thank you, for support and making me laugh AND reminding me that after 8 years on MN I should know better than to voice upset on AIBU. For that alone IABU.

I've realised this is just bringing out my fears that at 28, with all my friends settled down and me newly single, that I probably won't meet anyone and start a family. I have yoga trips abroad planned alone this year, a great career and friends but somehow because we are bloody well conditioned by the fucking patriarchy I feel inadequate because I'm 9 stone not 8.5 and don't have a man by my side.

NotYoda · 11/03/2017 16:44

The only woman I have ever been compared to was a Lego Woman (black bobbed haircut at the time)

ADishBestEatenCold · 11/03/2017 16:46

"plus in all films a solid 10 years older than me"

If the actress is 47 now and you're 28 ... in the first film she was 4 years older (than you are now).

I'm sorry about your ED, but you do sound as if you are judging the Bridget Jones physical type of woman.

DrScholl · 11/03/2017 16:46

KIRSTY ALLSOP THOUGH

Misswiggy · 11/03/2017 16:46

You think at 28 it's too late to marry and have a family - please try not to have this mindset as it's just not true. Most of my friends met/ married their dh's and had kids in their 30's - you are just feeling (understandably) negative at the moment.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 11/03/2017 16:48

I've been told I look like Jo Brand before. I love Jo Brand but, um,... Also been told I look like the manipulative one from 'Revenge' (dark hair, I think she's the mother, never really watched it) and Leslie from The Big Bang Theory. I'm buying the latter because when I was younger, I often got told I looked like Darlene from 'Roseanne'. Same actress. Regardless, it's not really the point. No stranger should feel it's OK to comment on your appearance.

Misswiggy · 11/03/2017 16:51

Do you mean Emily van camp op? She does look like a young renee zellweger actually..I'm sure the man meant it as a compliment.

SimonSmithsAmazingDancingBear · 11/03/2017 16:52

Yes, you were utterly, utterly unreasonable.

If it makes you feel any better, when my exhusband and I split up, one of the reasons he cited was that I wasn't enough like Bridget Jones.

So make of that what you will!! Grin

But seriously, it was a compliment. Trust me.

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 11/03/2017 16:52

I feel my post was disrespectful to Jo Brand. It's only because I once watched a programme where they were trying to persuade the public that she and that news presenter (the one with the really red lips - male) were the same person.

Misswiggy · 11/03/2017 16:52

I think Kirsty allsop is really pretty drscholl - it just goes to show beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

buttfacedmiscreant · 11/03/2017 16:53

Bridget Jones was lovely and her loveliness was courted and fought over by two very attractive men. You could do a lot worse than someone who Mark Darcy fell in love with.

roarityroar · 11/03/2017 16:54

ADish - we all make judgments about ourselves compared to other people. We are conditioned to do so. I would never look at another woman and think "sheesh she's carrying a few pounds she doesn't need" but naturally when I am compared to another woman that will make me feel a certain way.

We all do it.

PuppyMonkey · 11/03/2017 16:55

I have been told on a number of different occasions that I look like Janice Battersby fromCoronation Street AND Uma Thurman. I know which one I'd like to believe. Grin

Sorry for your shit week op Flowers

Chickoletta · 11/03/2017 16:55

Sorry you're having a shit time but please believe us that the man in the pub was trying to compliment you.

I hope you've got some good support in RL. Have you tried counselling?

For what it's worth, someone told me that my old passport photo looked like Rose West's mugshot! And they were probably right.

roarityroar · 11/03/2017 16:57

Yup Emily van Camp: similar to this one.

Thing is, like evc, no matter what my Wright is I will always have hamster cheeks. Anyone who has battled with an ED will get that.

Thank you everyone. I just feel pathetic, alone, ugly and a failure. The man at the bar was just the final kick in the teeth. Tomorrow will be brighter; it always is.

Have you see the most recent Bridget film? Renee Z didn't put any weight on for that one! It was one of the things that she was feeing good about - that she had got on top of her (perceived) weight 'problem' plus she now had a great job etc.

I have never seen Revenge but just googled and all the girls on it are knockouts!! Who cares what some toss-pot at a bar says? Quite often, men want to knock good looking girls (who they could never in a million years go out with and so automatically dislike) down a peg or two so that could be it also.

roarityroar · 11/03/2017 16:58

I've just finished very successful counselling for the trauma of my childhood.

Then the last week happened.

I will pick the pieces back up but crikey it's bad now.

You are being really over sensitive.
She is renowned as a beautiful woman.

roarityroar · 11/03/2017 16:59

I think Kirsty Allsopp is beautiful
