I earned £90 pw in my first full time job at 18 (waitress). I got lunch thrown in (£1.50 limit so sandwich n a drink).
Rent for a room in a house share was £40 pw, work was in walking distance (no wonder I was skinny then!!)
That left £50 a week for
Food (+ transport to get it, nearest supermarket was 5 miles away no online shopping then)
Clothes (went through shoes a fair bit in that job plus had to provide own workwear)
Toiletries & personal cleaning products
I remember that left me £10 'pocket money' unless I needed to use that money for sanitary stuff or haircut or whatever. And I was considered doing well by my peers! Because I got tips (not so much in off season from locals, better when tourists were around), and pay was higher than a lot of their jobs (in shops factories) IF they had a job, many took years to find work, did additional training IF they could get a place, a few were 'lucky' to get YTS placements (a whole £29 a week I think). Imo modern apprenticeships are no different to YTS.
Most stayed at home as they couldn't afford to move out. THAT put more financial pressure on their parents who of course often had other children they were trying to support too. So if tories think this doesn't affect 'ordinary working families' they're taking the piss!
I was desperate to move out due to a toxic violent abusive home life (which I wouldn't have been able to prove).
A lot of people of my generation ended up in unhappy/unsafe relationships partly as a result of this type of policy, by rushing into living together/marrying and having children as they couldn't afford to live alone PLUS benefits were more available for families than single childless people.
It certainly was the case for my best friend who also had an abusive home life who married an abusive man as a means of escape (she didn't know he was abusive at first). Thankfully she's out of that situation now.
