Would bunk beds for a parent and child be absolutely ridiculous?

Trying to work out logistics of having a baby/child in a flat with only one bedroom. There's a lounge, bathroom, TINY kitchen and bedroom. None of the rooms are large.

I was thinking of maybe having bunk beds in the bedroom but is this just stupid ... ?

You wouldn't be able to adopt in a one bed flat

But if you adopted an older child who wouldn't need nursery, you might be able to afford a mortgage, I presume, from what you said.
The question is whether you'd want an older child or only a baby.

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:05

Adoption isn't straightforward. I wouldn't be approved. Anyway.

Sorry cut myself off :) Anyway, adoption of older children often means they are pretty troubled, need extensive care etc.

Not saying you should adopt, or that it would be a likely probability. I just asked because it would be a possibility and any good advice depended on which possibilities for getting a child you were considering.

DD1 and i shared a room for two years; from her being almost five years old to almost seven. We moved into my parents TEENY one bed granny annexe ( my granny had passed away) as I was leaving a dv situation ... v compicated...we did fine. She loved being my roomy! However I was relieved when I could finally afford a two bed flat of our own. (Took another two years to get her to sleep in her own room though!)

doubletrouble41 · 02/03/2017 16:12

Complicated. doing one handed holding baby mning sorry.

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:12

No, I know you weren't, don't worry, it's just adoption wouldn't really be applicable for me.

Is there room in the bedroom for a double and a single? We live in a 2 bed with 2 kids. DS is disabled and needs his own room so the kids have a room each and DH and I sleep on a sofa bed in the living room. Hasn't made much of a difference to our lives to be honest. Wake up in the morning, put the bed away and then take it back out in the evening. We only ever used to use our bedroom for sleeping anyway so no different now.

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:13

If it was tidy I'd take a photo of it for you, lol. Yes and no. At a push ... but it would be VERY cramped.

OP I asked further up if the kitchen could be converted to a tiny bedroom and the units moved to make a kitchen/living room?

Cottongusset · 02/03/2017 16:15

Not another single mother by choice!

doubletrouble41 · 02/03/2017 16:16

oh and my point was, we had bunks. she took the top, but as shes always been a "roller" we attached a cot side to it to keep her safe. The underneath was my bed and had a curtain drawn round it and was "out of bounds" when she had friends to play! if she had a sleepover I slept on the lounge floor, lol x

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:16

Cotton? Confused

No, the kitchen can't be converted to a bedroom!

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 02/03/2017 16:17

That's a shame as it would have been a good solution.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 02/03/2017 16:18

I don't know if the person suggesting an au pair was being sarcastic? I hope so!

Confused
FallenSky · 02/03/2017 16:18

Blimey Cotton, your arse crack must be killing you from how far you've hoiked up those judgy pants.

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:20

I don't think it would be Primal.

It would cost a FORTUNE and would massively devalue the flat to have an oven, washing machine, washing up, in the corner of the (small) lounge.

PortiaCastis · 02/03/2017 16:22

God there are some real arseholes on here

BoffinMum · 02/03/2017 16:26

I would turn the bedroom into a child/family room and sleep on a good quality sofa bed in the living room.

Cottongusset · 02/03/2017 16:26

Just another potential drag on the rations - it seems pretty obvious how this will all end up. If you cant afford to give a child it's own proper bed then you cant afford a child.

AndNowItsSeven · 02/03/2017 16:27

Two people earning 20k wouldn't get ctc with one child's its per household not person.

Woulditbesilly · 02/03/2017 16:27

Ah, you mean I'll end up on benefits. I couldn't even if I wanted to.

Fair enough AndNow but proportionally they'd still be better off. Just pointing out £40,000 isn't the land of milk and honey when you chop it in half :)
