The cafe guy called me FAT

PonyPals · 01/03/2017 07:05

I was having a lovely day to my self shopping and decided to grab a coffee. I ordered a skinny latte and the guy said 'you know there is so much sugar in skinny milk, you shouldn't drink it and that is why you are Fat. I was so shocked 😳 and embarrassed and mumbled something like... I like being Fat and walked off.
I wish I had the guts to say something! What would you do?

An interesting post by someone who has suffered anorexia and met many people with it in hospital

I am on a diet because im fat. So should I be having full fat or skimmed milk with my porridge? i have skimmed milk with everything and don't like full fat milk in tea ] but would prefer it in porridge.

I am fat i am fully aware that i am fat and went on a diet as my blood pressure was high. I don't need anyone else to tell me that I am fat but i also get annoyed when people tell me im not fat. Yes i am im a size 20 up top and 18 at the bottom, at 5'2" that is FAT! I am relatively fit and run 5k twice a week and have a pretty active job.

If anyone can help eith my milk dilemma id much appreciate it

Stick with skimmed if you're aiming for the fewest calories.

Having said that, if you have about 250 ml for a bowl of porridge, the difference is only about 70 calories. So if having full fat is the difference between you enjoying your morning porridge or not, I'd stick with the full fat. That way you're less likely to pour yourself a bowl of coco pops instead.

raindripsonruses · 01/03/2017 19:42

TripAdvisor the cafe.

58NotBothered · 01/03/2017 20:10

Rather unfortunate way of expressing an opinion.
But are you actually overweight?

VestalVirgin · 01/03/2017 20:21

Stick with skimmed if you're aiming for the fewest calories.

Calories aren't the only factor, though.

The body only stores fat when insuline is released, and that typically happens as reaction to excess blood sugar.
I'd rather use full fat milk and eat a little less porridge to even out the calories.

Especially if you prefer full fat anyway.

Was anyone else watching The Real Marigold Hotel last week. Lionel Blair had comments about his distended tummy on three occasions while out and about in India.
He has the condition as a side effect of treatment for prostate cancer.

He was really upset by it.

50shadesofknackered · 01/03/2017 20:37

I think I would use my fall back/ favourite insult. ' I may be fat but if I had a face like yours I'd bend over and teach my arse to talk!' what a nasty fucker!

haveacupoftea · 01/03/2017 20:50

Surely the solution to the milk problem is semi skimmed milk?

PonyPals · 02/03/2017 08:49

50 shades.. so far my fav response!

my weights none of your business unless I'm sitting on your face

Ha!!!!

"I am on a diet because im fat. So should I be having full fat or skimmed milk with my porridge? i have skimmed milk with everything and don't like full fat milk in tea ] but would prefer it in porridge."

You might be better to have no breakfast and just eat at lunch and dinner time actually. If you haev to have any breakfast at all I would have 3 eggs and nothing else. Porridge is carbs.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 02/03/2017 09:47

Lem

If you are trying to lose weight you have my respect. My wife is doing the same. For her it is made more difficult by being insulin dependant diabetic. Any reduction in calories causes blood sugar problems.. I respect anyone who tries and does something about being overweight. I do understand it is very difficult.. But it is sooo worthwhile in the end

Suggestions for you,
Keep off the booze, it is an appetite stimulant and has gazilions of calories,
Turn down the heating, your body consumes a hell of a lot of calories keeping itself warm, Being slightly cool will take off weight.
Do exercise that makes you puff and pant (but not so much as to become breathless) .. your lungs consume huge amounts of energy sucking air in and out.. indeed they are one of the most energy hungry organs of the body
Drink a lot of water..

NataliaOsipova · 02/03/2017 10:24

I suspect he meant "that's what makes you fat" as in "that's what makes/us/one/people fat" - the impersonal "you" causes trouble in English.

Agree with this! I think in Italian, you would use the third person for a general statement (ie he/she/one is fat). In English, the use of "one is" is seen as slightly affected /pompous, so English speaking people use "you" instead, as the pp said, in an impersonal way. But that's quite hard to grasp fully if it's your second language and so misunderstandings can occur. I bet he meant you as in "one" (ie that is what makes one fat), whereas you (understandably) took it personally.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 02/03/2017 11:19

50 that's brilliant Grin

FunkyMonkey99 · 02/03/2017 11:53

First post! Smile I got the "skimmed milk" is full of sugar lecture from a barista yesterday. They like using full fat because the coffee froths up more easily.

ravenmum · 02/03/2017 11:55

Whether he meant "you personally" or "fat people", he was directing the comment at the OP so of course she took it personally. If someone gets in a lift with me and I say "This lift only takes 500kg" then that isn't just a general statement about the lift, is it?

PonyPals · 02/03/2017 12:13

He doesn't seem to have a problem with English. Speaks well, with no accent so I don't think it was 'lost in translation'

Are there any slim posters contributing to this thread? Just out of interest...

CaraAspen · 02/03/2017 12:16

I also think he was making a general point and not one specifically directed at the OP.

LouKout · 02/03/2017 12:17

Yes there are Cara.

Sorry to spoil your fun.

CaraAspen · 02/03/2017 12:23

At least some posters are able to say they are "fat". I haven't seen anyone claim otherwise.

OpalFruitsMarathonsandSpira · 02/03/2017 12:44

FunkyMonkey99

Oh my god you've got it in one! How could I have missed this - I used to work in a restaurant and we did the coffees! Skimmed is a pita to froth!

Ffs I wasted a day on this shit! Grin Brush the chip off your shoulder op. I'm sure this was the reason he said it.
