Vaping around children?

What's the general consensus? Just curious to hear your opinions. I'm fighting a constant battle with DH at the moment and I wonder if I'm being unreasonable.

I think that's important to acknowledge. Many people have given up smoking which is significantly and proven, dangerous. Vaping being demonised by 'what ifs' that haven't even been proven is surely detrimental to the point of it - giving up cigarettes!
Most people who vape are considerate, you will always get inconsiderate twats in all walks of life.
Making it into something it isn't, on an off chance it's 0.0001% dangerous (I am as unproven with this as anyone else) is small minded

Mrs9C · 10/03/2017 15:49

My husband does it, I hate it and it drives me round the bend, but no matter how much I go on about it it doesn't change.

Jins · 10/03/2017 16:47

Personally I wouldn't vape around my family if they hated it and kept going on about it. It's not difficult to move away and I can't bear being nagged.

I'm lucky that they are supporting me in giving up smoking

LilQueenie · 10/03/2017 16:59

I don't drive. I feel sorry for those with breathing problems too. Not everyone is happy to breathe in the vapours.

jennymac · 10/03/2017 17:06

It doesn't bother me at all. Neither DH or I smoke or vape but a friend does and would vape around my children and his own and it wouldn't occur to me to object. I know a bit more about the subject than most people though as my work is concerned with e-cigarettes so I have read a lot of the research and attended conferences etc on the subject. I think people are just becoming more intolerant these days - the amount of people who complain about things like vaping but drive round in SUV type diesels (which are causing far more harm) and think nothing of it.

ZanyMobster · 10/03/2017 17:10

My friend has a little box thing that she uses (rectangle, not like a cigarette shape). It produces lots of smoke but doesn't smell at all so I don't mind her using it in the house. Not actually sure what it is but I am assuming it is 'vaping'?

However, I would treat it the same as smoking in front of children. In fact I think it looks more appealing to younger people. It's not the smell, more the fact it would be nice to discourage people from smoking rather than making it look more glamorous. I am sure my friend vapes more than it would be physically possible to smoke.

Jins · 10/03/2017 19:29

She probably does vape more but is very probably taking in less nicotine. It's not the same as smoking which is a relatively big dose in a short time along with all the myriad nasties in tobacco.

Jessnducky · 18/03/2018 11:45

Djkkslider late at replying but i would rather be stood behind someone vaping with children than someone using the colourful language that you choose just saying

Bogmanstar · 02/12/2019 09:52

"water based steam thing"

Oh dear - you're not very well-informed, are you? You seem to have swallowed Big Vaping PR 100%.

Even vapour which doesn't contain weed / THC oils etc still contains:

  • nicotine (damages heart and arteries)
  • propylene glycol, a chemical which causes eye and lung irritation.

Also, when e-liquids are heated at high temperatures, carbonyls are formed, which are potentially toxic.

The carbonyls in vaping liquids include:

Formaldehyde: This carcinogen / irritant is know to cause a loss of red blood cells and in large amounts causes burns, abnormalities in heart theme, irregular breathing and coma.

Acetaldehyde: The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the US National Institutes of Health both warn of the risk of cancer associated with this chemical. There is also some evidence that is can cause reduction in coordination and memory impairment.

Acetone: Large amounts of acetone have been know to cause headache, slurred speech, lack of coordination, low blood pressure and coma.

Butanol: Symptoms of butanol poisoning include headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, low blood pressure, trouble breathing and coma.

Old thread. But yeah, I expect vaping to be smoking all over again, in terms of the real health impacts becoming known over time, and the industry trying to cover them up. Chiefly because it's the same damn industry! A significant number of the big vape brands are now owned by tobacco companies.

Debbie698 · 02/12/2019 10:36

Realise this is an old thread, but my cousin’s dd has cystic fibrosis, and vape smoke irritates her damaged lungs and sends her into horrendous coughing fits.

People shouldn’t be allowed to walk around spewing dangerous gasses. It’s the height of selfishness.

InnisandGunn · 02/12/2019 10:49

Vaper here. We don't vape around DS, purely because as others have said it's not had the time for health risks to be known. We go into another room in the house, or outside when we do vape. It's essentially water vapour, but still, I don't like it around him. Can't explain why. I also don't like doing it out and about as the massive plumes of vapour are a bit embarrassing. It's been a godsend for me as I struggled to quit smoking, but I do intend to stop as DS gets older just because we don't really know what it is. Saying that, I've had no chest complaints since swapping from smoking to vaping.

Cornettoninja · 02/12/2019 11:08

I think it’s right that vaping is treated the same as smoking in public but I’ll admit I do vape in the house albeit in a separate room to dd (generally the kitchen with the extractor hood on Grin).

I’m not naive enough to think that inhaling anything other than air is good for anybody but I also don’t think vaping is going to be found to be the boogy man many think it is.

I wouldn’t spray polish or air freshener in the same room at the same frequency I vape if dd was in there but I also wouldn’t stop her entering the room once it had stopped.

I know it’s an old thread but I would counter that asking someone to vape outside in their own home could well lead them to just having a fag. It’s the lesser of two evils and I would be inclined to compromise.

Cornettoninja · 02/12/2019 11:09

Oh and I don’t have an obnoxious vape that expels massive clouds or use liquids that have a particular scent. The menthol one I use doesn’t smell of anything at all really.

vivacian · 02/12/2019 11:44

Thanks for resurrecting this @Bogmanstar Hmm

marymungoandminge · 02/12/2019 12:12

Vaping is no different from smoking. It's still a nicotine addiction no matter what way it is marketed

Well my vape fluid is nicotine free so please explain to me how I have a nicotine addiction?
