Vaping around children?

What's the general consensus? Just curious to hear your opinions. I'm fighting a constant battle with DH at the moment and I wonder if I'm being unreasonable.

I vape, don't like the term but that's what it is. I also don't have one of those enormous tanks that billow out huge plumes of vapour, it isn't smoke...I don't like those ones either and no, I don't want to breathe in other peoples vapour!! Mine is tiny in comparison and you barely notice. Like anything though I don't blow it around in public in peoples faces, that's just rude and inconsiderate.

As to wether or not it is absolutely safe, well nobody really knows for sure. It contains nicotine but It is safer than smoking.

For all those horrified people...if you take your kids to a disco or a concert and there is a fog machine I doubt you will run in to scoop them up and away for fear it will do them untold damage forever.

SmellySphinx · 01/03/2017 06:25

I've also seen a handful of teens using them. I can only assume they were smokers before hand. I don't know of any who have used them anyway.

I would recommend them in place of smoking.

exLtEveDallas · 01/03/2017 06:28

I have no issues whatsoever with vaping in public, around children, in homes or cars etc.

It's not smoking. It is not producing harmful chemicals into the air. It is scaremongering to suggest it is.

scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2016/05/17/10-common-questions-about-e-cigarettes-answered/

There has been tons of research, and actually vaping has been around for a lot longer than people think - the first ecigarettes went on sale in 2006.

FurryTurnip · 01/03/2017 06:38

My friends husband vapes in front of my 5 year old DS and I hate it. He's fascinated by it as it lights up and obviously he thinks the smoke looks cool too. It's very tricky as I don't feel I can ask him to stop when it's in his own home, though I would if they were at our house. To my DS it's a fascinating contraption and I hate to think that will lead him to try it in a few years time.

MaisyPops · 01/03/2017 06:47

Wonder if attitudes differ based on if posters smoke/dont/uses to?

Me and DH are non smokers and never have. No way would I be happy with vaping around my kids. We dont know the dangers yet.

But say a parent was smoking and has now swapped to vaping. I wouldnt say her kids seeing her vaping is a terrible thing (though preferably keep kids out if the cloud). Like many posters, she could talk to the kids about stopping smoking etc.

People who wander around vaping like its some kind of cool toy (why they have to light up is one that confises me) and seem to l swag around the place loudly discusisng flavours etc i just think are arseholes. My worry is that people view it as soem kind of stylish trend with daft candy flavours and with about 6 new vaping "boutiques" in town its being marketed as a safe cool thing to do rather than a smoking cessasion aid. I have an issue with that.

Reow · 01/03/2017 06:51

I started vaping to quit smoking a year ago and still do it.

Mine is small and only releases a small puff of vapour.

I hate being in a room with someone using the mega huge cloud of steam vapes.

But I don't think they should be banned around children and I don't think they are in the same league as cigarettes

MooMooTheFirst · 01/03/2017 06:52

DP didn't even smoke and now vapes Hmm I hate it and think it stinks and is ridiculous. I'm all for people giving up smoking and using one but he didn't smoke?! I don't let him vape around the baby and would get cross if he did it next to me while pregnant.

lovetonamechange · 01/03/2017 06:55

People vaping look like morons.

It doesn't stink anywhere near as much as cigarettes but it still reeks. Smells like cheap pound shop toilet cleaner.

Ginmakesitallok · 01/03/2017 07:03

They might look like morons (in your opinion) but at least they aren't killing themselves and others around them. There has been lots of research which shows that the vapour produced is not harmful. I have no issues vaping round my kids. It's not smoking, it's vaping.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 01/03/2017 07:09

Wow, Orange, you take the cake for most appalling person today! You're proud of vaping while pregnant? Seriously? Some amazingly selfish people on here but that is the sort of thing a normal person would be utterly ashamed of.

lovetonamechange · 01/03/2017 07:09

Yes my opinion and lots of others.

It's made lots of people's tongues go black - if you don't believe me google the pics - so no it's not a healthy option it's disgusting.

PencilsInSpace · 01/03/2017 07:43

Gosh what lovely people on this thread Hmm

The most important think your DH can do for the health of the whole family is quit smoking OP.

The priority has to be to help him do that. On the whole, vapers do far better if they can vape little and often - it's not smoking and the nicotine is absorbed very differently. Especially if he has only recently switched (or is still cutting down the fags) making him go outside away from the DC is likely to lessen his chances of success.

What are your concerns and how old are your DC?

There has been a LOT of research into whether vaping is harmful to bystanders and no evidence has been found. Public Health England, having reviewed all the evidence, have stated: there is no evidence of harm to bystanders from exposure to e-cigarette vapour and the risks to their health are likely to be extremely low.

(actually you might find that whole document useful, it's aimed at workplaces and venues but talks through all the pros and cons of allowing vaping in various settings)

Are you concerned your DC will take up vaping when they are older? All the evidence shows that those young people who vape regularly do so for the same reason as adults - to cut down or quit tobacco. Beyond this, young people are experimenting but not getting hooked. Outside of lit tobacco, nicotine is simply not that addictive.

Maybe ask him to pop into another room to vape if you're concerned and talk to the DC in an age appropriate way.

Well done to your DH he's doing a brilliant thing for his health and the health of the whole family.

PencilsInSpace · 01/03/2017 07:54

Iwasjustabouttosaythat No I think the cake is all yours. Orange did not say she was proud to have vaped during pregnancy (though I hope she is proud not to have smoked during pregnancy).

The Smoking in Pregnancy Challenge Group says: While licensed NRT products are the recommended option, if a pregnant woman chooses to use an electronic cigarette and if that helps her to stay smokefree, she should not be discouraged from doing so.

Around 1 in 10 pregnant women are still smoking at the time of delivery. There's a reason they don't tend to come on MN for support to quit. Well done.

All found with one Google search, from one news site.

I do not believe teunare safe at all. The may be safer than smoking but that's a ridiculous thing to say. The aim should be to quit completely, unfortunately they seem to have become 'Trendy' and spawned endless Shops and booths in shopping centres.

fannydaggerz · 01/03/2017 08:39

It doesn't bother me.

Sallystyle · 01/03/2017 08:42

I vape around my children.

My friend is happy for me to vape around hers. However, while I do have a vape that can produce massive clouds I mouth inhale, close the ring thing so I am only producing small amounts of vapour.

londonrach · 01/03/2017 08:44

I wouldnt. I predict it be the next health scare.

Ginmakesitallok · 01/03/2017 08:47

Smoking kills 50% of people who do it. There is no evidence of significant harm from vaping. If vaping reduces smoking levels who gives a shit what it looks like?? Normalising vaping while continuing to denormalise smoking is a very good thing in my opinion.

LittleLionMansMummy · 01/03/2017 08:52

Dh vapes. I strongly suspect that its effects in terms of passive inhalation are similar to that of one of those squirting air fresheners. However, largely due to lack of research into its effects in a passive vaping environment I've asked dh not to do it in the confined space of the car. I don't like him doing it in the bedroom either as our 3 month old is in there with us. But I'm a strong supporter of vaping and have no objections personally to people doing it near me. I don't find the smell offensive (well no more so than some perfumes or aftershaves!) and think people who do it as a quit smoking aid should be supported. It's not teaching young children to smoke at all, any more than having a glass of wine or a beer is teaching them to drink alcohol. To me it's no bigger 'addiction' than drinking coffee for a caffeine hit.

Sallystyle · 01/03/2017 08:58

Some twatty replies here as usual.

I smoked and that wasn't ok. I stank, I was a selfish cunt who was causing people to have an increased risk of lung cancer.

I quit and vape instead and some people get a small whiff of slightly sweet stuff and I'm still a selfish cunt who is a bad parent and I look like a moron to boot.

Basically people aren't particularly happy that smokers can now quit smoking by vaping and actually enjoy the process while feeling healthier and increasing life expectancy greatly.

Well tough fucking luck.

I will vape in public where I'm allowed and if people are so precious they can't handle a bit of sweet smell and water vapour then that is their lookout. Huge clouds of vape is anti social but you don't have to do that.

I am not harming others. It's not dangerous and more research is proving that, the chemicals aren't harmful and reading some shit online doesn't make it true. People just like to look down their noses at others. Instead of being happy that fewer people are smoking which actually can be harmful to them they have to put down vapers and potentially put off new vapers.

Those people are the idiots.

It's ok not to like people vaping around your children. I respect that. But calling people selfish cunts, bad parents etc just makes you look pathetic.

I can run now. I no longer get chest infections. I can breathe. My kids lost their dad to cancer, I moved to vaping to decrease their chances of watching me die of cancer too. If people don't like smelling my vape then tough.

Flumpernickel · 01/03/2017 09:10

Well said U2.

Frankly, I would rather be trapped in a small unventilated room with 20 big cloud vapers, than to ever bear the misfortune of encountering some of the sanctimonious, judgemental arseholes on this thread.

Kikikaakaa · 01/03/2017 09:47

I don't let the anti vaping brigade bother me.

Also I am so much healthier now I don't smoke (but vape) but no one has asked me to take part in any medical research. I had a peak flow of 350 on a good day as a smoker now it's 500.

Realitea · 01/03/2017 10:05

I'm a closet vaper. I vape in the bathroom and have two dc's. It is a lot better than smoking which I'm so relieved to have given up. I had the idea that vaping was safe but a friend who works for medical research has said that there's some news coming out very soon that'll make me want to throw it away.
I do wish I didn't have the habit but I believe if I gave it up I'd be back on cigarettes which I really don't want.

Sallystyle · 01/03/2017 10:13

but a friend who works for medical research has said that there's some news coming out very soon that'll make me want to throw it away.

I will believe that when I see it. With all the positive research I wonder what the news is that contradicts it all.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 01/03/2017 10:14

I think the same rules as smoking should apply to vaping. It's obviously not just the same as steam from a kettle, which is just pure water, and you wouldn't stand over a kettle inhaling it either. But I do think they are good for helping people to quit smoking, and are obviously better than a cig. But I wouldn't allow it in my house, and I HATE it in pubs or restaurants or something.
