Vaping around children?

What's the general consensus? Just curious to hear your opinions. I'm fighting a constant battle with DH at the moment and I wonder if I'm being unreasonable.

So this discussion about small, hypothetical risks from being around a vaper was going on while your baby was strapped into a car? OK then. I guess it's true what they say, humans are very bad at assessing risk Grin

I'm not having a go at you about driving with a baby on board and when it comes to vaping you must of course do what works for your family. However, it's good to have a sense of proportion when it comes to risk. It'll make being a parent far less stressful if you can manage it.

Screwinthetuna · 02/03/2017 07:56

No, I don't like it. DH does it in the car where he thinks kids can't see and blows it out the window. Even that pisses me off. It's not just the potential dangerous chemicals, I don't want them growing up wanting to do it, like Daddy

Applebite · 02/03/2017 08:02

I fucking hate DP's vape thing. He will not get rid of it. It stinks and I'm sure it's going to turn out to be bad for us all, just as cigarettes did, however much he tells me it's just water and vegetable oils. I hate it so much, it's the cause of many an argument because he just cannot give up the nasty thing. Urgh.

kali110 · 02/03/2017 13:10

i wish people would stop going on about the other ways to give up smoking, like it's so easy, it doesn't work for everybody!
Alan carr does not work for everybody.
If people vape instead of smoking then that's good!
what exacrly would you rather orange do? Smoke instead during pregnancy? As some midwives don't suggest completely quitting as it's stressful... If she vaped instead then good for her, better than smoking!
Again, not a smoker.

Flumpernickel · 02/03/2017 14:39

100% agree Kali, Allan carr is a book, not a nicotine substitute or magic wand. Would you tell a heroine addict to just read a book? That is how addictive smoking is and it is vital to bear that in mind when suggesting quitting options. Allan carr works for some, but IME, those I know who were successful have been lower level and social smokers. I tried Allan carr, it didnt work, I have tried patches, they work until you try to taper off them, then You slip back. Vaping, is the only thing that has worked for me, and I now no longer vape either, as I found that so much easier to give up. My DH still vapes after 1 yr, but he is tapering down to 0% nicotine now, so he is hoping to be off it altogether in the next few weeks.

Flumpernickel · 02/03/2017 14:44

Apple would you rather your DH smoked?

WafflingVersatile · 02/03/2017 14:46

Saw someone vaping in Morrisons. Shocking.

Flumpernickel · 02/03/2017 14:48

So OP, you started this thread because your DH, once, accidentally, trailed some virtually harmless flavoured vapour into the car? Your OP gave the impression that this was something he did deliberately all the time! Do you get like this in coffee shops from the nicotine vapour? Or every time someone opens a bottle of wine?

YABU.

Flumpernickel · 02/03/2017 14:48

Sorry.... caffeine vapour.

FairyDogMother11 · 02/03/2017 15:04

Vaping is banned where I work as the vapes activate the fire alarm. We've lost a lot of money on a busy night evacuating, it's not because we don't like the smell that it's banned!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/03/2017 15:08

a friend who works for medical research has said that there's some news coming out very soon that'll make me want to throw it away

You might want to ask who paid for the "research" (?) behind whatever the news is. It's worth remembering that there's a lot of money to be made/lost around tobacco and vaping, which has been known to skew reports pretty badly

kali110 · 02/03/2017 17:17

Flumpernickel yes! I know a few who tried alan carr, gave up and then went straight back to smoking after 2 or 3 weeks.
It's an addiction.
If people go onto vape and stop smoking completely then good on them.

BlurryFace · 02/03/2017 21:26

I've gone from fags, to vaping, back to fags and when I vaped I treated it like smoking - outside, away from the kids. It's a habit that's not ideal and the effects aren't 100% known, though it's better than smoking.

beggin4mercy · 02/03/2017 22:06

@FairyDog you must have very sensitive smoke alarms if they don't go off when the kettle is boiled near them. That's what comes out of vapes too.

I vape in airport toilets all the time, all over the world lucky me. Never had a problem.

Now in fairness I wouldn't try it on an actual plane. That might cause a divert lol. But must just for the heck of it try it on a short haul to London sometime. I doubt any smoke alarm will go off. They are SMOKE alarms, not VAPOUR alarms FGS.

But maybe we are conditioned to think that smoke = vape and airlines have us terrified.

There are more drunks causing havoc on planes these days anyway. They need a big alarm.

Sallystyle · 02/03/2017 22:33

In three years of vaping around a variety of smoke alarms, not one has gone off.

BagelGoesWalking · 03/03/2017 00:33

I smoked for 30 years (with long breaks for pregnancy and bf) and stupidly went back to it. Tried a few times to quit: Alan Carr had absolutely no effect on me, didn't want patches as I have sensitive skin and was worried about rashes etc and they give my DH nightmares! Hated the taste of gum and sprays. Have been vaping since 1st Jan and have no wish for a cig! I consider that a huge win. I have no cough, much less breathlessness, don't stink etc etc. My DH (who has also tried and failed to give up several times) smokes outside, really notice the smell on him, I know he's outside as I hear him cough every time he lights up.. so I consider myself very fortunate that vaping exists as an option.

SmellySphinx · 03/03/2017 10:18

The exploding batteries are either dodgy units or cheap build it yourself ones people have bought. Same as cheapo mobile phones you can buy, really cheap ones. They are essentially a rechargeable battery in a sealed unit.

SmellySphinx · 03/03/2017 10:27

Oh and as far as the chewing gum, aside from the fact (it's FACT to me at least Grin) it's fucking disgusting, it burns your mouth and I spat it out. Horrid! I also tried those inhaler type things, not so bad but not dissimilar ecigs in that you're inhaling nicotine.

If you're concerned about your husband using it in the car with the window open then yes tell him it bothers you. That's entirely up to you, it wouldn't really bother me any more than having the window open in traffic, or not in traffic I suppose, exhaust fumes are blowing in/by at the same time. As are fumes from cars when you're walking along the pavement at pram height usually. Again, it's all about how you approach risk really.

Just ask your husband to use it in other rooms, Windows open, out of the window, at the back door.

krakentoast · 03/03/2017 10:36

Wow, vapers are defensive folk.

I have three teenage cousins. They all started vaping because it was cool and their (non-smoker) mum let them do it in the house etc because it was apparently harmless. Now my cousins all smoke cigarettes Sad

Obviously it's better than smoking and it's a healthier substitute if you want to quit. But surely the end goal should be not to rely on any kind of habit like that? And the "cooler" it becomes, the more it's becoming a bit of a gateway to a smoking habit for young people iyswim.

As for people saying "hardly anyone smokes these days anyway" - er, not in my experience! Don't know where you live but every time I walk past a bus stop I get cigarette smoke blown in my face. I prefer vape smoke but it's still annoying to have random clouds of thick stuff blown in your face by strangers

Applebite · 03/03/2017 10:39

Flumpernickel - if he smoked, we wouldn't be together. It's a deal breaker for me. He'd given up and moved onto the vape 2 years before I met him, but if he'd been a smoker I wouldn't have gone on a date with him.

My DG got gangrene from smoking and lost part of her foot when I was a child. If you'd seen what I saw, it would have made you hate smoking for life too!

hollinhurst84 · 03/03/2017 10:44

kraken - we are! It's because even swapping from smoking to giving up via vaping is HARD. And then you get not only non smokers but smokers whining at you that it's worse than smoking, it stinks, it creates new cancers, it's disgusting, it's killing people in the street, it shouldn't be allowed, it's a gateway drug.... And you're just like "yay me for quitting smoking" except people don't say it because ooooh you haven't really it's just as bad and it'll kill you and did you hear about the one that exploded and...

Then you start thinking fuck this shit, nobody actually said anything when I smoked
And people still say the same stuff even when you point up thread to the research
And that's why we are defensive 😂😂😂

Applebite · 03/03/2017 11:52

But hollinhurst - what if passive vaping does turn out to be dangerous, just as passive smoking is (and one of my best friends lost her lovely mother to lung cancer a year ago; she had never smoked in her life, but guess what, her husband had a 20 a day habit Sad)? doesn't that thought worry you?

DP is so adamant it won't, but he's not a scientist, he's not a dr, he's a salesman - he has no idea, it drives me insane! And I know that I drive him insane when I mention it, but it really does worry me. He puts his need to vape above my wishes and our DD. he's brilliant in every other way, but this one thing he simply has a block about, and I hate it.

I get that being preached at must be really annoying, but for non smokers, we didn't ask smokers to start smoking when they knew full well it was harmful to themselves and others; we didn't ask vapers to vape - so why should we have to risk breathing in the fumes?!

hollinhurst84 · 03/03/2017 11:58

I'm happy with the research done that was all linked up thread, and with what cancer research and public health say
Mine isn't huge vape clouds and if people walk past without standing on my toes then glaring at me (this has happened!) then they're not anywhere near it
Nobody seems to worry about breathing in traffic fumes or anything else that's constantly in the air but say that the 5 seconds it takes to walk past me might be dangerous?

Orangebird69 · 03/03/2017 12:05

Apple, vaping will NEVER be declared 100% safe. Because no one will ever take that responsibility, quite rightly. But from UNBIASED research, it hasn't be found unsafe either. But I'm guessing that your slightly hysterical reaction to turn dh's vaping means that even if it were declared safe, you'd still Google your fingers off, searching for studies that said otherwise. Bit like anti-vaxxers not acknowledging that the rise in children not dying from preventable diseases is due to children having vaccines. Hmm

Applebite · 03/03/2017 12:11

Hollinhurst - so you're happy with it for you, that's fine. And if you only do it outside or in your own home (assuming your family are happy to take the risk too or that you live alone), then that's fine too. People glaring at you for doing it in those situations are being daft. But would you expect other people to be happy with it indoors or in their homes, just because you are?

Er. It's absolutely nothing like anti-vaxxers, what a bonkers comparison. Comparing something that is essential for children's safety and public health with something people choose to take up that is totally unnecessary at best and harmful at worst is not a sensible point. I don't think it's "hysterical" not to want clouds of chemicals to be blown around your flat and your very young child. If DP wants to risk it, he can go on the balcony, as I tell him regularly. If that's your idea of "hysteria" then those chemicals are getting to your brain after all!
